Terri Webster Schrandt‘s blogfest theme this week is THANKFUL.

The American Thanksgiving holiday will be celebrated on Nov. 23, while the Canadian version was marked on Oct. 6. Although historically different (ours is a harvest festival), the overall concept of giving thanks and expressing gratitude is the same.

Most of the images I’m sharing here are from long ago and not taken by me. This is more of a memoir than a photography showcase.

THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR SERVICE!

November 11th is a day of remembrance around the world for military personnel who put their lives on the line to keep us safe. It’s still fresh in my mind, as I think of my late father, who was an officer in the Canadian Army and a Korean war vet.

He also led a couple of dangerous peacekeeping missions in Lebanon and the Gaza strip, where another horrible was is being waged right now!

THANKFUL FOR HUBBY, HOUNDS AND HOME

I met my husband in 1971 and we’ve now been married for over 50 years! How fortunate are we to have found each other so early in life? And of course, we added dogs to the mix; our own, plus the guests at our “Canine Inn” (retired in 2021).

Speaking of dogs, I am so thankful to have found an occupation (after losing my stressful corporate job) that gave me over 25 years of pleasure!

THANKFUL FOR TRAVEL OPPORTUNITIES

I was born in Germany to a German mother and a Canadian military father, which afforded me many travel opportunities from a young age. My parents recognized the educational value, and I thank them for that!

  1. I enjoyed reading your post of gratitude.
I am thankful for my good health, family, friends and the little travels I have been fortunate to experience. Gratitude truly fills life with joy!

    Happy Thanksgiving. Debbie 🦃

    1. Thank you, Veronica! 🙂 You also have many good things to be grateful for and yes, there is joy in gratitude. I hope you and your family are having a lovely Thanksgiving weekend.

  2. I’m thankful for my home, my job, and my dogs on this, the day before our U.S. Thanksgiving. I appreciate seeing your gratitude for all that you have. How wonderful to have a successful marriage. You were so wise to create your own business involving dogs.

    Love,
    Janie

    1. Your dogs are lovely, Janie! 💖 A home and a job are what most people want. It’s alarming to see how many are without these days. We definitely got lucky in the marriage department, but there have been rocky periods as well. Thankfully, we overcame those and carried on. 🙂 I created the pet care business out of desperation, after wasting two years of my life trying to get another corporate job like the one I was downsized from. This was during a recession (early 90s), and nobody wanted mid-level managers.

  3. Thank you very much for the beautiful insights, it’s really nostalgic for you today.
Greetings from a rainy and grey Germany,
    Kirsi

  4. I came by earlier but couldn’t get my comment to post. Let me try again.

What a lovely post of gratitude! I as well thank your dad for his service as I do all the men and women who fought stood shoulder to shoulder with American men and women fighting to keep peace loving countries free. That seems like such a contrasting thing when you think of fighting and peace in the same breathe but you can’t get freedom without fighting for it. Also, am thankful for my husband, family, and home. I haven’t done any world traveling but the limited journeying in the states I have enjoyed a lot and am looking forward to new adventures to come. I’m thankful for good health, especially as I move into my senior years. Yikes, I can’t believe I just said that! I have too many thanksgivings to name but am appreciative of each blessing. Thanks for sharing a few of yours with us, Debbie!

    1. I’m sorry you had trouble leaving your comment, Cathy. 🙁 Thanks for coming back to try again. I think there was a technical problem on the website that morning, but it didn’t last long.

Good point about the juxtaposition between war and peace. I only wish peace would prevail.

Your country has many wonderful places to visit as well and I’ve enjoyed your travelogues. Here’s to new adventures wherever they may be! Since the pandemic, we have had no desire to get on a plane.

I’m with you about being thankful for (mostly) good health as I speed towards 70 (Jan. 2025). You’re still a young’un by comparison. 😉 The word “senior” used to bother me and I still think it applies to other people only. Hahaha! It’s nice to get those senior discounts, though. 😎

I hope you and your family are having a lovely Thanksgiving weekend. Cheers!

      1. We’re taking advantage of those senior discounts, as well. You’d think the discounts would be bigger than they are to try to encourage more people in this age range to use. I would imagine seniors do more traveling and spend more money than adults with kids at home. It’s certainly get whatever we can because it’s better than nothing. 😀

    1. Thank you, Sandee! 🙂 I have indeed been fortunate in many ways. I hope you and your family are having a lovely Thanksgiving weekend. Hugs back! 💖

  5. I am thankful for all that God has allowed me to wander through! Have a great Thanksgiving (Because we Americans think everything happens on our dates)!

    1. “Because we Americans think everything happens on our dates” You said it, I didn’t! 😆 That’s okay, we are used to it and it’s the thought that counts, yes?

  6. Wonderful history, and very suitable for the season. (Though it is not celebrated in England of course.)
Plus, who doesn’t love dogs! Thanks for illustrating your life story, Debbie.
    Best wishes, Pete.

    1. Thanks, Pete! 🙂 And yes, dogs are the best. My German mother was introduced to Thanksgiving by my Canadian father, and she always cooked a turkey dinner for his benefit, but that was the extent of our celebrations. The American holiday is a much bigger deal than the Canadian version.

  7. Hi Debbie, what a wonderful post full of memories and so much for which to be thankful! I love the old photos of you with your family (a blessing indeed), as well as the images of people in your life who served in the military. The dogs you had and cared for over the years are so sweet and no doubt provide you with loving memories. Thanks for sharing your blessings with your fellow bloggers for Sunday Stills this week and enjoy a wonderful week ahead.
