HISTORY

Wild One” or “Real Wild Child is an Australian rock and roll song written by Johnny Greenan, Johnny O’Keefe, and Dave Owens. According to O’Keefe’s guitarist, Lou Casch, the song was inspired by an incident at a gig in Newton, Sydney, in about 1957. According to Casch, as O’Keefe and the Dee Jays played at an upstairs venue, an “Italian wedding” reception was taking place downstairs. Some of the dance patrons came to blows with wedding guests in the men’s toilets, and within minutes the brawl had become a full-scale riot that spilled out into the street, with police eventually calling in the Navy Shore Patrol to help restore order. The release date of the single, July 5, 1958, is considered the birth of Australian rock and roll.
Probaby the most well-known version of this song was recorded by Iggy Pop, for his 1986 album Blah-Blah-Blah. Titled “Real Wild Child (Wild One)”, this became a No. 10 hit on the UK Singles Chart in January 1987. It also charted on Billboard’s Album Rock Tracks, peaking at No. 27 and was featured in the films Crocodile Dundee II, Adventures in Babysitting, Problem Child 1 & 2 and Pretty Woman.

  1. He!me back in (from a freezing night, btw, which you know I LOVE LOVE LOVE!) and decided to check out a few battles before heading back to bed. Well Hell, I’m wide awake now! 🙂
I don’t remember this song at all but it is a fun jam! Tough call actually as I like both but I think overall I enjoy Suzi Quatro’s version better. There’s more musical exploration with her version, vs Joan’s steady rhythm.
Very interesting back story. “Some of the dance patrons came to blows with wedding guests in the men’s toilets,…” Lol. You know I used to own a bar. That’s a typical hot spot for fights breaking out, the bathroom. I’d like to know what the hell goes on in the men’s bathrooms that instigates fights! I only had to call the police once for a fight at my place. There wasn’t much fighting going on in my place but it did happen and usually the other patrons pitched in to break them up. I barred a few people but really only one for starting fights. Ah, the good ol’ days… 🙂

I didn’t get to putting a battle together in time for this month. Like you, I’ve not been blogging at all since, well, I can’t remember when. I know I’ll be posting next Monday for the Monday’s Music Moves Me hop and then I’ll be battle-ready for February.

Have a great weekend. I’m going to go back to bed and try to get some sleep before Picasso decides he needs to go out and pee again… You know how it is…
    XOXO

    1. The first sentence got cut off from my comment: I think I say Hi Debbie, and something else and then “I just woke up and took the dogs out and came back in…” and you have the rest. Not sure what happened there. Weird.
      talk soon.

    2. So nice to see you, Michele! 😀 I guess it’s colder than normal in Texas, along with everywhere else. I heard they even had snow in Florida! 😮 I bet you love it. Me, not so much. 😛

The booze always flows liberally at Italian weddings, so no doubt that fuelled the fire! Definitely an interesting backstory. Another vote for Suzi. Cool! This is turning into a good battle. 🙂 Thanks for coming by to vote.

  2. I liked both a lot, but I’m going to give this to Joan because Suzi’s was a little too trebly, i.e. the sound quality of the song was heavy on the treble and not balanced with the bass. Weird reason, I know, but I just enjoyed Joan’s a little better because it was easier to listen to,

  3. Glad to see you back on the blog Debbie. I remember Susie Quatro but never heard of the others….I don’t have speakers on my PC so I can’t listen in and say which is the best Wild One

    1. Thanks! 🙂 I’ve been indulging the photography muse lately, which doesn’t leave as much time for blogging. I thought all PCs had speakers, but no worries. I appreciate your visit nonetheless. Happy New Year!

  4. HiYa, DEBBIE!

First, I wanna say that Myke Todd’s comment made me chuckle. What’s with him and drumsticks? It’s like he’s the audience member version of a spontaneously combusting Spinal Tap drummer or something. Ha!

My take on this was exactly the same as Lee’s: “For the fuller sound, I’m going to go with JOAN JETT’s version. Suzi Quatro comes across as a bit shrieky.”

However, I want to add that I really, REALLY liked the original Johnny O’Keefe recording best out of all of them, and I think an O’Keefe / Iggy Pop match-up might make for a good Battle.

I was not familiar with this song, but its early recording date and its energy and attitude interested me, because for years I have been going backwards trying to determine what I think might be the song we could justifiably refer to as the first Punk or Proto-Punk Rock song. This O’Keefe original is definitely close to the top of the list!

It seems that many regard the first Ramones recordings to be the genesis of Punk as we came to know it, but I like trying to find that first seed, that first Proto-Punk recording.

I think, strictly in terms of that buzz-saw guitar sound, Elton John’s ‘Saturday Night’s Alright For Fighting’ might have a claim. But in searching for that Punk Rock ethos, which is what interests me the most, I last settled on Eddie Cochran’s ‘SUMMERTIME BLUES’, which was recorded in March of ’58. O’Keefe’s ‘Real Wild Child’ was recorded in the same year, but I haven’t found the month.

I’m surprised and kind of excited to find something out of Australia that can even contend with Eddie’s groundbreaking ‘Summertime Blues’ in the Proto-Punk category. Thanks for introducing me to it, Debbie!

    1. Hi Stephen; That was a funny story with Myke and the drumsticks. 😀 Got your vote for Joan. This could be another close one (I hope)! Your quest for the first punk song sounds interesting and I think Johnny could well be in the running here. I’ve heard that said about the Ramones being the first real punk band. Never considered Elton John in that category! Good theory about Summertime Blues. In a BOTB between Johnny and Iggy, I would vote for Iggy. It’s the version I know best (from movies) and it makes me smile. Thanks for your vote and your insights. Cheers!

  5. I’m going to vote for Suzi Quatro. I’m not sure why I like that version better. If I work it out I’ll come back and tell you.

  6. Joan Jett, knowing I will hate myself for loving her.

Did I ever tell you that Joan Jett’s drummer hit me in the head with a drumstick? Oh, yes he did. It was in 2006, in Nashville, at Vann’s Warped Tour. And, a few weeks later, in Jackson, at the close of a concert by Halestorm, their drummer hit me in the head with yet another drumstick. Later that night, I got to celebrate Lzzy Hale’s Birthday, so that was not so bad.

    1. Thanks for your vote. Joan, it is, bad pun notwithstanding. 😉

What are the odds of being hit in the head twice in the same year with a drumstick? You should buy lottery tickets, Myke. 😀

I didn’t know you were into hard rock! Halestorm is a pretty good band. What fun it must have been to celebrate Lzzy’s birthday!

  7. I’ve apparently heard this song in the movies you mentioned as I’ve seen a couple of them, but honestly I don’t remember this one. Not a style that I’m particularly fond of, but it’s kind of catchy.

Tough choice as they both have certain merit. For the fuller sound I’m going to go with Joan Jett ‘s version. Suzi Quattro comes across as a bit shrieky.

    Good to see you back.

    Tossing It Out

    1. Yes, I think this song can easily become an earworm. LOL 😀 That’s another vote for Joan.

I’m cutting back online activities, so not sure how many posts will be forthcoming. We’ll see how it goes…..Thanks, Lee!

  8. Two really awesome female rockers! I think the first time I actually paid any attention to the song was in the movie “Pretty Woman”. I must have watched that movie over 20 times. I’m going to have to cast my vote for Joan Jett, as her version is much closer to the one that I am more familiar with. Excellent battle!

    1. Pretty Woman! I knew there was a movie missing from the list (I added it in). That’s where I remember it from. Thanks, Mary! 🙂 A vote for Joan Jett.

  9. Debbie,

Welcome back to Blogosphere, ole pal! We all need to step away from the madness but it’s always good to get back to what ya enjoy, right? I wasn’t sure how I’d go on this one. You know me, I’m not really a true heavy rocker. I’m going to give my vote to Suzi Quatro. I can’t put my finger on why I like her cover better but I think it’s the vocals. Joan is a bit too harsh for sounding which doesn’t suit my ears. You know me, I like those soft, whispery female voices. 🙂 I’m sure I will find myself either alone or in the minority at the end of this battle. TTFN, my friend! 😉

    1. Thanks, Cathy! 🙂 We’ll see how it goes. I just don’t want to spend that much time online these days. My new fitness kick.

First vote goes to Suzy Quatro. She paved the way for others like Joan. It could be a close battle.
