All my life I’ve wanted to visit Greece and indulge my passion for ancient history, archaeology and mythology.

When my husband first broached the subject of marking our 40th anniversary (in 2013) with a vacation, it came to mind immediately.

Thus, we embarked on the trip of a lifetime! Come along for the ride, will you?

This is the final chapter of our Greek Odyssey. See previous ones HERE.

Sensational,  Spectacular,  Scenic,  Seductive, Splendiferous Santorini!

Last stop on the islands cruise and we were thrilled to be there for two nights!

Santorini is essentially what remains after an enormous volcanic explosion destroyed the earliest settlements on a formerly single island, creating the current geological caldera.

A giant central, rectangular lagoon, which measures about 12 by 7 km (7.5 by 4.3 mi), is surrounded by 300 m (980 ft) high, steep cliffs on three sides. The main island slopes downward to the Aegean Sea. – Wikipedia

The excavation site of Akrotiri is said to be the inspiration for Plato’s “Atlantis”. It was destroyed by the massive eruptions all those centuries ago.  The volcanic ash preserved many frescoes, objects and artworks. Click on images to enlarge:

Santorini has many beautiful beaches. Most striking (and rocky) is the Red Beach. Click on images to enlarge:

  1. Hi Debbie – very late … but your photos are just beautiful – loved seeing them … and yes, I’d love to visit! Learn more too …

Great you’ve done your 40th anniversary travelogues, and are working on your 45th – congratulations. Amazing and brilliant to have it up here on the net – ready for regular access. Fantastic – cheers Hilary

    1. Hi HIlary! It’s never too late for a visit. The comment sections for all posts are open 24/7. 🙂 I’m glad you enjoyed the travelogue. Putting my travels online serves two purposes; to entertain others and for me to have a permanent record. Great for reminiscing and yes, regular access! ? Thanks for coming by!

  2. Oh my goodness! These photos are fabulous. What a wonderful trip. Greece is steeped in so much history and the surrounding areas offer so much rich culture. Truly a trip of a lifetime. I very much enjoyed your photos. Thanks for sharing them.

    1. Sorry for the late reply Lisa. I’m running WAY behind this month. Trying to catch up, now. Greece is magical! ? Going there was a lifetime dream come true. I’m glad you enjoyed the photos. Thanks for coming by!

    1. I’m glad you enjoyed the photos. 🙂 Santorini is on my re-visit list, too. It’s such an amazing island! ? Yes, Akrotiri is mind-blowing! I hope you get to see it in person, one day. Thanks for visiting The Den!

  3. You make me feel like packing my bag straight away and jump on a flight. The sunset, the beaches, the pristine white walls… absolutely beautiful. I hope I can visit it atleast once.
I have always wondered how the walls remain so strikingly clean and white all the time.

    1. I’m glad you enjoyed the tour, Raj! 🙂 Here’s hoping you will get to Greece one day. It’s magical! ? I think there’s less pollution over there, so the walls stay cleaner, longer. One of the tour guides said they whitewash them every couple of years. Thanks for coming by!

  4. Debbie,

I remember this series and your thrill to take your dream vacation. This is so cool that you got to see Santorini and the remains of what being called Atlantis. The technology this civilization had was quite advanced which makes me wonder, why did it take 1000 years for the Romans to come up with indoor toilets? You’d think surely someone from Atlantis would’ve carried that knowledge beyond the city but that wasn’t the case. Your photos are fabulous. I’m surprised they allowed cameras on-site but I’m glad that they were so you could share these amazing images with me because you know we’ll never visit such a place. It’s through the eyes of other’s cameras that I experience faraway places. 🙂 Thanks for allowing me to come along, my friend!

    1. Hi Cathy; The Atlantis story is truly fascinating! Far as I know, the entire Minoan civilization was wiped out, along with all their advanced technology. It took another 1000 years for others to re-invent things. 🙂 I’m glad you enjoyed the images. They didn’t allow us to take flash photos at Akrotiri, but there was enough daylight, so it didn’t matter. Armchair travel is a great byproduct of the internet. Explore the world without leaving home. ? Much cheaper that way! 😀 Thanks for visiting Santorini with me.

    1. I’m glad you enjoyed the travelogue, Betty! 🙂 Here’s hoping you will get to Santorini, one day. It’s a magical island! ? Thanks for coming by and for inviting me to join your link party. Cheers!

  5. Santorini has definitely been on my bucket list for a long time and your post gave me something to think about, what with all those beautiful white and blue pictures that made me fall in love with the place all over again. I’m bookmarking your post so I can check it out when we’re planning our next trip. 🙂

Meanwhile, thank you so much for sharing these smashing post, Debbie and for joining our blog hop this week.
Happy #ww and an awesome rest of the week.

    Cheers

    1. I’m glad you found the travelogue useful, Esha. 🙂 Here’s hoping you are able to visit Santorini in the near future. You will love it! ? Thanks for coming by!

  6. Of all the places you’ve shared, this would be my go-to. Just watched a deal on the Atlantis connection (for like the fifth time) a couple of weeks ago. A better explanation than all the Charles Berlitz stuff.

  7. Wow. I would love to see more about Akrotiri. So many people out there as smart or smarter than we are today. I would love to know about their modern plumbing, who came up with it, etc. Much like I would like to know how the Pyramids truly came to being… Great post. I hope you make it back Debbie.

    1. Welcome to The Den, Kathryn! 🙂 Santorini is a real paradise, despite the crowds. ? I hope you will experience it for yourself, one day. Thanks for the visit and comment.

    1. All of Europe is steeped in history; Asia too. Italy and Greece are definitely at the top of the list, not only for the history but for everything else. The people there have such joie de vivre! ?
