WELCOME BACK TO BOTB! 
It’s time to announce the results of the July 15th showdown.

#BOTB results, WHISKEY IN THE JAR

BATTLE OF THE BANDS (BOTB), hosted by StMcC Presents Battle of the Bands is where you listen to different recordings of the same song and vote for the one you like best. Two “Battles” per month, on the 1st and 15th. (Please note: Effective July 2017, some of us switched to once a month on the 15th. Others may opt to continue with twice a month.) Votes will be tallied and posted the following week. 

Same as last time and I quote:

Seems we have a good old-fashioned blowout, here! 😮 For the longest time, it was looking like a shutout, so I’m grateful for the later votes that came in. Mine won’t make any difference, but, I’ll add my two cents, anyway. 

Misirlou is a song I’ve known and loved most of my life and I thought both of these covers were outstanding. Yes, Santo & Johnny’s version sounds “thinner’ because recording technology was more primitive back then (as John mentioned). This may have been responsible for their poor showing here – or not. Most of you said you liked it, but not as much as the more classical sounds of William, Caroline and Tina. I was torn and had to listen several times before deciding. In the end, the fabulous percussion and middle eastern vibes presented by Santo & Johnny won out. Not to mention, that hint of Dick Dale’s surf guitar. Doesn’t help them, but at least the blowout is a bit smaller. You can tell it’s summer. Less of a turnout for this battle:

  2. What a great song choice! One version inspired exotic visuals while the other presented them. That’s all I’ll say since I missed the bus 🙂

  3. The trio was a winner in my mind for many reasons, but Santo and Johnny just resonated with me. I think it was that retro sound which made the recording sound like it was coming to me through some lost AM radio wave from the past. It was a good match nevertheless.

  4. I wouldn’t call that a blowout Debbie. One third of the voters went for Santo & Johnny. It was wonderful to see them perform that live. Such energy!
    It is definitely summer: i’m about to go take a dip in the dogs pool!

      1. haha. Speaking of pool: I have two new boarders here, one a greyhound (Brynn) and the other a mixed breed (Verity). The other night, of course in the middle of the night, I took the dogs out for a potty but the new ones are quite quirky and didn’t want to go out through the garage and into the dogrun. So when I brought the others in, I tried to coax the new ones out the back since they were right by that door. They liked that idea so the both of them went out and did their thing. After I picked up the poop, I was walking back to the deck and said “C’mon girls, let’s go in and go back to sleep” and turned to look back to make sure they were following me. Well, Miss Verity wasn’t following me, she had gotten in and plopped herself down in the pool. I said “It’s 3:30 in the morning, you can’t be in the pool!” Good Lord! She looked at me like “Time? What’s time? I don’t care what time it is…Just let me lay here.” So I got her out and all dried off and said “You better not jump up on my bed right now!”
        3:30 in the morning…the new definition of a Midnight Dip…

  5. It was a wee bit lopsided, DEBBIE, but really not that bad at all. I wouldn’t even call it a “blowout”. I mean, if only one person who voted for the trio had voted for Santo & Johnny instead, you’d have had a final score of 5-4, and that would have been considered a great Battle.
