A BIG CITY NIGHT WITH SCORPIONS

On August 21, German rock band, Scorpions, kicked off their Rock Believer North American Tour in Toronto. This band has been around for over 50 years and I’m a huge fan!

There were a few glitches…

For starters, we opted to drive in from the suburbs, which normally takes about 25-30 minutes. Big mistake! We forgot the Canadian National Exhibition was also going on, right across the street from the concert venue.

It was a frustrating stop and go drive that lasted an hour and a half! In hindsight, we should have taken the GO (commuter) train, but didn’t want to do the 30-minute hike from the station. Serves us right for being lazy!

Going in, we knew the second act, English band Whitesnake, had cancelled due to illness. ThunderMother, a Swedish all-female group, was supposed to open the show. I had checked them out on YouTube and was looking forward to their set!

Well… that didn’t happen either! We found out later their travel visas hadn’t come through in time. So far, so NOT good. 😛

Fortunately, a local singer, JJ Wilde, took the stage and wowed the crowd with her powerful vocals and kick-ass band! (She had opened for Scorpions previously in France and was scheduled to perform at the CNE, August 25.)

And then…..THIS! 😮

Damn! It was looking more and more grim. Would there be a concert at all tonight?! I amused myself by taking random photos.

Finally, some good news! Still, it would be another 30 minutes before the band took the stage.

  1. How exciting, well except for all the disappointments and delays. Thanks for sharing!
Believe it or not, I’ve never been to a concert. Have a huge fear of crowds (I was trampled in one after a high school pep rally) Have never forgotten that horrid feeling of death as breathing became impossible under the crush of bodies. Horror like no other.

    1. What a terrifying experience, Renee! 😮 No wonder you have a fear of crowds. I get a little claustrophobic, but will put up with that for the ultimate reward. Concerts are my drug of choice! 😀

  2. Dear dear Debbie,

First of all thank you so much for sharing this with me. <3 <3

I can feel your euphoria. Yes, I’m a rock fan and of course a Scorpion fan too!!! (and you know that!)

Did they play Follow your Heart and Winds of Change?
It must have been so very incredible to get back to watching a live concert after the last 2-1/2 years of pandemic.
I do hope we have a nice band come by and play in India soon too, and I can attend.

And I’m glad despite a few hiccups you got to see a stellar performance.

My last concert was in December 2019 watching U2. Bono was outstanding to say the least.

I also hope that going forward you get to attend a lot many concerts that will inject you with your elixir of youth.

    Love and light xoxo

    1. My pleasure, Natasha! 😀 Yes, I knew you would enjoy this. That concert high is still with me, almost two weeks later. ? No Follow Your Heart, but they did perform Winds of Change with a slight change of lyrics in support of Ukraine. See the photo showing the peace sign? I am thrilled that concerts are back and was having serious withdrawal symptoms the last couple of years. ? I hope you get the chance to attend one soon! Thanks for coming by and have a good weekend.

  3. The concerts I go to are small ones, and outdoors. (I have never liked indoors – sensory overload and large crowds weren’t my thing, even before Covid). My last concert was a Porchfest in a neighboring small city with local talent performing . I missed Peter Noone and Herman’s Hermits at the NYS Fair yesterday; I’ve seen them twice and they put on a really good show. I think that venue can hold some 13,000 people. plus there is room for overflow in nearby spaces, but you don’t feel hemmed in once the music starts. I’ll be going to our Blues on the Bridge on September 17. P.S. I am a Scorpions fan.

    1. HI Alana, the Budweiser Stage is an outdoor venue. A roof covers the premium seats, and the rest is open air lawn (general admission, bring your own chair or blanket). As a bonus, it’s right on the shore of Lake Ontario and has lovely views of the Toronto skyline. 🙂 I can imagine Peter Noone and his Hermits wowed the crowd. Too bad you missed it! Your Blues on the Bridge festival sounds great, too. As a Scorpions fan, I hope you enjoyed the photo spread and videos. Thanks for coming by.

  4. Hi Debbie – well something happened … and it looks wonderful – you obviously had fun, even in the downtime … it’s just not my scene, but I captured (felt) your enthusiasm for the events – cheers Hilary

    1. I know, not everyone likes this type of music or event, but concerts are my “fountain of youth” and I get a drug-free high that lasts for days. Glad the enthusiasm showed through! 😀

  5. So much craziness. Glad you at least got to see the band you set out to see. I can just imagine the traffic you were in with the CNE across the street. Oye! I give you credit girl. I can’t take downtown T.O. driving. 🙂

    1. Yes, it was a crazy night, for sure. Worth it, in the end! 😀 Hubby was driving but I could handle it, having driven through Los Angeles a couple of times. Toronto traffic is EQUALLY bad – patience and vigilance are key.

  6. Your concert was like our NASCAR race (excepting I was watching on TV). Glad you at least got to see the main event! I got a song called Hammersmith floating around on my shuffle, but it’s got a lot of competition getting in Ima write JJ’s name down and see what she sounds like. Rock on!

    1. Hi Sandee, I LOVE going to concerts! 😀 They’re my drug of choice and I was experiencing major withdrawal the last couple of years. Thanks for coming by!

    1. Rock concerts are my “Fountain of Youth” and give me a drug-free high that lasts for days! 😀 It’s a real addiction and I don’t want to be cured. ? Thanks for coming by, Damyanti. 🙂

  7. Hey Debbie – We have tickets to see the Scorpions in October! Looking forward to it. We’ve seen them three or four times now. Tomorrow night we are going to see Pat Benatar at the Mountain Winery. The opening act is Berlin. Great pictures! Sounds like an adventurous time!

    1. Hi Janet, I’m sure you’ll love the show. We’ve also seen them several times before and they never disappoint. I bet Pat Benatar and Berlin were good as well. Thanks for coming by!

  8. Debbie,

How cool! I’m glad y’all had such a nice time despite the traffic congestion going to the concert. You did a fab job capturing the experience. The singers opening for Scorpion are new to me. I got tickled with JJ Wilde’s keyboard/guitarist flopping his long hair all over the place and getting low in his moves. How on earth can a musician play like that is beyond me! It certainly was fun to watch, though. Did you use your DSLR camera for these shots? You did a great job! I’m curious to know because I thought taking photos was frowned on at these events. I love the photos and the music! You’re welcome to join the 4M party if you’d like. 😉 Have a boogietastic week, my dear!

    1. Hi Cathy, yes, we had a great time, despite all. I was impressed with JJ and her band and they did an excellent job of filling in. I’m glad you like the photos! 🙂 DSLR cameras aren’t allowed at concerts (unless you’re a member of the press). Most people use their smartphones, but mine is a cheapie, so I opted for the Canon Powershot and did some editing, afterwards. Thanks for the 4m invite!

    1. Hi Pete! Rock concerts are my “Fountain of Youth” and give me a natural high without the drugs. 😀 Scorpions always put on amazing shows. BTW, the lead singer and guitarist are both 74. Must be the rousing music. 😉 What genre do you like best? I’d love to do a feature for you. Thanks for coming by, even if this isn’t your cup of tea.
