WELCOME BACK TO BOTB!
It’s time to announce the results of the August 15th showdown.
BATTLE OF THE BANDS (BOTB), hosted by StMcC Presents Battle of the Bands is where you listen to different recordings and vote for the one you like best. Two “Battles” per month, on the 1st and 15th. (Please note: Effective July 2017, I switched to once a month on the 15th only. This will allow me more time to share other types of material with you.) Votes will be tallied and posted the following
This contest had two radically different styles and most of you preferred one over the other. While I appreciated both performances (ain’t nuttin’ wrong with that, StMcC! 😉 ) and the skill sets involved, it was Keith Urban who drew me in, emotionally.
His version was more intense and similar in style to Joe Cocker’s, which I love. Plus, I’m a sucker for a good guitar riff! 👌 The Gibson Brothers’ bluegrass version was interesting, but to be honest, that genre doesn’t hold much appeal for me and there was no connection.
Here’s how it played out:
KEITH URBAN AND FRIENDS
Arlee, Birgit, Carol, Cherdo, Debbie, Eugenia, Hilary, Janet, Janie, John, Mary,
Total: 11
~~~~~~~~
GIBSON BROTHERS AND FRIENDS
Myke, Roland, Stephen
Total: 3
AND THE WINNER IS,
KEITH URBAN AND FRIENDS!
Here’s the winner, once again:
And, since this battle was in honour of Woodstock’s 50th anniversary,
one of my favourite songs of all time by Melanie Safka, who was there:
Debbie,
I missed most of the battles this round. I don’t know where my brain has been but it’s not been with keeping up like I want. Oh, well…thanks for sharing the outcome. I’ll be back to playing alone next month on the 15th for sure. 😉
DEBBIE ~
I did like that dancing sexpot in the middle who was scarcely in her little black dress. 😉
Quite a blowout.
This is kind of ironic but I think the thing that curtailed my love of electric guitarists wailing on their guitars (a la Keith Urban) was my introduction to DANNY GATTON. Gatton was so supremely talented, with such a wealth of musical ideas that went instantaneously from his mind to his fingers that he kind of ruined my ability to enjoy most other guitarists. Having seen / heard so much of Gatton’s playing, everyone else seems like a piker to me.
I mean as talented as Jimi Hendrix, Randy Rhoads, Eddie Van Halen, Ritchie Blackmore, Jeff Beck, Steve Vai (et al.) may have been, after listening so much to Danny Gatton, they all sound like “Amateur Hour” to me now. The only guitarist I still truly enjoy hearing wail on the guitar since my discovery of Gatton is Gary Moore. I don’t know why that is. Just Moore’s style, I guess.
Anyway, your post was detailed and a fun read. And at least I (and two other folks) kept it from being a shutout.
That was a goodie, Debbie!
The curly-headed blonde, Kim, used to be married to a lawyer I worked with before she got super famous with Little Big Town. Tragically, he died (I don’t know how! He was so healthy!) and she has since hit it big and remarried. Small world, eh?
All right, Keith. You should feel honored that Debbie featured you. I have a Melanie album. I have sung along to it so many times.
Love,
Janie
Oh, my… My choice got shellacked. Woof!
Happy Woodstock revisitations,* Debbie and Friends.
I may have made that word up. 😉
Well, the winner was a solid win. Way cool.
Have a fabulous day, Debbie. ♥
That was a very decisive victory for Keith Urban. I’ve liked everything I’ve heard Urban perform and I judged your Battle from pretty much the same perspective as you did. I probably enjoy bluegrass style more than you do, but usually I’d be prone to pick another style over bluegrass when it comes to a Battle setting.
Nice match up.
Hi Debbie – glad he won … I’m pretty hopeless musically … but get to be reminded of creative talents via the blog … thanks – cheers Hilary
