C’EST LA VIE SAY THE OLD FOLKS

23 CommentsAgeing/Aging, From the Archives, Humour, Life, Music

Old folks can be pretty cool.

But I never thought I’d actually BE one of them!

Shocked to be old!

I was watching a 36-year-old movie recently (Victory), starring Michael Caine and noticed how young and handsome he looked, (and thinking the movie was way more recent than that). Then it hit me – and not for the first time! I’m well over the hill and on the downward slide. All I can say is “What happened?” “Where did the time go?” and all those other tired clichés.

This is from one of my favourite movies; made only 23 years ago.

C’est la vie, indeed.
Kick up your heels and enjoy it!

  1. How did I miss this??? OMG, LOVE LOVE LOVE! Girl, I was laughing watching Born to Be Mild because I’m laying in my heating pad right now! Ha! Yep, it’s caught up with me, having just turned 55. My body may be old but in my head I’m back in the 70s…
GREAT post! So glad you revived it.
I haven’t seen Pulp Fiction in so long. I need to put that in my To Watch queue. John Travolta sure can dance! He has some great footwork.
And the Older Ladies video: Awesome!
Thanks for this: I needed it!
    Love ya,

  2. Debbie! I loved the video! Born to be mild indeed (Not!)

We have those moments–things that seem as if they happened just the other day, only they didn’t. To us, the early 80s is still recent. Ah well. Time.

The song in the video also reminded me of the parody version of “These are a few of my favorite things” from The Sound of Music.

  3. What a fun post! I think it’s a sign of a full and busy life if age has to sneak up and tap you on the shoulder one day when you least expect it. It’s a comfort to know they put GPS on walkers these days, I just might need it 😉
Travolta was looking as good and dangerous as ever, the Older Ladies were a hoot, and “Born To Be Mild” turned the giggles into hiccups. Pass the Mylanta?

  4. I know what you’re saying. It really hit me a bit harder this year when I realized that my oldest kid turned 40 and my youngest will be 30 in just a couple more years. Five grandchildren also sends an age message to me. Yeah, no doubt that I’m getting not just older, but old. Not that old really, but what I would have thought of as old 40 years ago.

  5. My dear friend of some ages!!!

The moment it hit me was about a month ago, when I was purchasing a train ticket online!!! Since I have the rail card, I punched in the number and got a nice advert “you are eligible for our senior promotion–would you like to take advantage of it?”…………………..YIKES! SENIOR!!!! ME!!!!! SENIOR!!!
Then it hit home………..yeeeeeeeeeeeees….. senior, me! I am over 60 and in Italy in three years time I will be eligible for social security pension!!!!!!! [If the country holds up till then, that is! ]

I was shocked….all that weekend!!! It was all that I could think about!!!! And I have to confess, I’m still not used to it!!!!

    1. I know what you mean! 🙂 About 7 or 8 years ago, I went to Shopper’s Drug Mart and they were having “Senior Discount Day”. Imagine my shock when the cashier asked if I was eligible?! I wasn’t old enough, but that bummed me out for the whole day. 🙁 It’s nice to be able to take advantage of these lower prices though. Hubby, being older, always claims the privilege.

  6. Oh, my gosh, Debbie… you have brought all kinds of tales to recall… Let’s go with this one… When I was in my mid-twenties, I went to the fair in the fall, in Memphis, when I met up, as planned, with a girl who was eighteen. Part of the evening was spent, seeing Chuck Berry in concert, which was all kinds of fun for me, but not for her. She was just a little too hip for this performer from the past… bear in mind, even “My Ding-a-ling” was a golden oldie by this time… Anyways, I gathered, throughout the evening, her perception of me was changing, and by the time we left, she saw me as an “older” person. Add to that, from the fair we went to a steak house that was inhabited by nothing but adults, which I imagine, sealed the deal for her. When we parted company that night, I thought I heard her call me “Sir” under her breath (in a respectful way, of course.) There is a little more to this, but I think it is best left unsaid here. I will tell later, if you wish.

Wonderful post, as always… Thanks, Myke

    1. That sounds like an interesting story, Mike. 🙂 It’s pretty funny to me that someone in their mid twenties would be considered “older”. Thanks for visiting. I love to read other peoples’ adventures!

    1. Love it Carol! YOU GO GIRL! 😀 I’m always shocked by the reality of time passed as opposed to the perception and that serves as a reminder. 😛

  7. Age is but just a number…But yes I do agree time passes so fast..6 years back I was fresh out of college and now I feel so much older than the freshers …

    1. Ah – easy for a young person to say that! 😉 I do agree to some extent, but there are certain realities that keep intruding on that ideal. Thanks for visiting and have a good weekend.

  8. The “hill,” my darling is a state of mind. Since my mind says I’m 17 I haven’t even started approaching this mythological hill, despite my body’s complaints of otherwise. 😉

I’m figuring that I’ll be 17 way into senility and then it won’t matter where I am on the hill since I won’t recognize it anymore!

Longs chats de minou en direct! Err, Vive Peter Pan! 😉

    1. Haha! Excellent attitude dear kitty. 🙂 I try to sail through life in a similar manner, but these damn reminders of reality keep intruding. LOL

  9. LOL this scene from the movie is one of my faves too! It takes me back further to when Chubby Checker was singing about doing the Twist!
Now for a Tom Petty tune quote…Oh my my, oh hell girl put on your party dress!!!
    smiling,
