THIS WEEK’S TOPIC:
TOWER

CN TOWER, TORONTO 🍁

Whenever I’m in the city, I make it a point to take a photo of my favourite landmark!

The CN Tower is a 553.3 m-high (1815.3 ft) concrete communications and observation tower in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Complete in 1976, it is located in the downtown core, built on the former Railway Lands. Its name, ‘CN’, refers to the Canadian National railway company that built the tower.

It held the record for world’s tallest free-standing structure from 1975 until 2007, when it was surpassed by the Burj Khalifa, and the world’s tallest tower until 2009 when the Canton Tower was built. It is currently the tenth-tallest free-standing structure in the world and remains the tallest free-standing structure on land in the Western Hemisphere.

In 1995, the CN Tower was declared one of the modern Seven Wonders of the World by the American Society of Civil Engineers. It also belongs to the World Federation of Great Towers.

  1. I like the city view against the orange sunset streaked sky and the one of the CN Tower to the left of that photo with the purplish-blue light running vertically down the center of it. That’s really cool! Great photos of your favorite building!!

    1. Thanks, Cathy! 🙂 I snapped the purple one from our hotel room window (we were on an overnight getaway) in the dead of night during a snowstorm.

    1. Thanks, Vidya! I’m glad you enjoyed your trip up the CN Tower. 🙂 We haven’t done that in years, but one of these days we will go again.

  2. I love the CN Tower! It is definitely something to be proud of! I haven’t been there for a long while, but with the details you provided, and the pictures, I want to go back!🌺🩷

  3. Never heard of engineers’ seven wonders. With the usual bad mouthing of engineers we do, I’m half tempted to do a list of my own… no disrespect to your tower, just to engineers at our level…

    1. I didn’t know about The Shard. Thanks for the link. It looks spectacular and seems to have everything! 🤩 I’d love to stay at the hotel for a spell.

  4. Amazing photos Debbie, you really know how to use a camera, just great! Have a joyous weekend🌺

  5. It is a very impressive tower. When we visited in 1987 (that was my first visit to North America) my dad sat down on what he thought was a glass sofa or glass benches. Then he looked through the glass and saw some toy looking structures, maybe a little toy town, and then he realized that he was looking down at the city below through the glass he was sitting on. He came off pretty quick.

    1. That’s a funny story about your dad, Thomas! 😆 The CN Tower is Toronto’s pride and joy. I haven’t been there in a while, but we ate at the restaurant twice over the years. The revolving view was spectacular and we could see all the way to Buffalo, N.Y.!
