#BOTB RESULTS

WELCOME BACK TO BOTB!
It’s time to announce the results of the June 15th showdown.

BATTLE OF THE BANDS (BOTB), hosted by StMcC Presents Battle of the Bands is where you listen to different recordings and vote for the one you like best. Two “Battles” per month, on the 1st and 15th. (Please note: Effective July 2017, I switched to once a month on the 15th only. This will allow me more time to share other types of material with you.) Votes will be tallied and posted the following

Well, this one was another complete surprise (to me, anyway). I thought for sure, it would be a close battle, but no! 😮  Most of you preferred Billy Stewart’s version to Janis’ rough-hewn vocals. Personally, while I do like Billy’s unique rendition, Janis has always thrilled me with this one, so I have to choose her. Can’t be a blowout with 4 votes, right?

Here’s how it played out:

BILLY STEWART
aisasami, Arlee, Birgit, Cathy, Chris, Eugenia, Gilly, John, Mary,  Roland, Stephen
Total: 11
~~~~~~~~
JANIS JOPLIN
Cherdo, Debbie, Janie, Myke
Total: 4
AND THE WINNER IS,
BILLY STEWART
Here’s the winner in a rare live clip:
Because I’m sorry Janis lost so badly, I’m throwing this in.
Her Porche, on display at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio.
She was the ultimate, cool rockchick!
  1. Debbie,
    WOW, now that was a decisive win for Stewart! Hey, you have a song for this week’s 4M theme ‘Summertime’. I know you’re taking a summer break but you’re welcome to link up and join the party if you want but no worries if you wanna skip it. I totally get it. Thanks for sharing the results of your last battle.
    1. Hi Cathy; The results of this BOTB were a bit of a shock! 😮 Oh well, so it goes…I’ve sworn off blog hops for the summer as they’re just too time-consuming. Thanks for the thought, though. 🙂
  2. Wow, I am surprised Janis lost so badly! IMO, the song wasn’t meant for her vocals. Also, IMO, Ella Fitgerald rocked it!
  3. Sometimes it’s difficult to find the right matchups. Take my battle for example, when I tossed in a last minute contender and they ran away with the votes. I do like some of Janis’ songs ‘Piece of My Heart’ and ‘ Me and Bobby Magee’ come to mind, but for some reason I had never heard Billy Stewart before and I was impressed.
    1. You never know what’s going to happen with BOTB. I was expecting a closer contest. No question, Billy’s completely different spin was excellent.
  4. Sorry Debbie! I know you wanted Janis to win but to be honest, anyone with a Porche is a winner anyway in my book! And anyone with a funky multi-colored Porche like that is an absolute superstar! The Billy Stewart version was so different to Janis’s version of Summertime they almost sound like two different songs – had it been Me and Bobby McGee – I’m sure I would have voted for Janis Joplin because no one has ever done that better than her and I do love that. Am intrigued by Ode To a Dead Tree – can’t wait!
    1. Hi Gilly; I was fully prepared that Janis might lose (rockers traditionally don’t do well in these BOTB contests), but the shocker was by how much! 😮 My expectation was for a close battle. These things can be surprising, at times. The Porsche is cool, isn’t it? 🙂 Thanks for checking out the results. Hopefully, the next contest will be more even.
  5. Obviously, the wrong person won, but I’ll try to live with it. I’m surprised to see Janis’s Porsche. I read an article about it a few years ago that said it had been painted over and lost. Now that Porsche would be a reason to visit Cleveland.
    Love,
    Janie
    1. You and I are, sadly, in the minority here, Janie! 🙁 I took that photo in 2011, so, who knows what has happened to Janis’ Porsche in the meantime. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is fantastic! I would go again. Thanks for coming by and have a good weekend!
  6. It was interesting, but nothing can beat the version sung by Ella Fitzgerald and Louie Armstrong. THE Best ever! Janis Joplin, well, she never was my fave (except for Me and Bobby McGhee), so I would have voted for the winner. 😉
  7. No fan of Janis am I. I don’t like the person she was, nor her “overwrought” singing style. But there are exceptions to most rules, and in the ‘Exceptions’ category, I DO like Joplin’s ‘Summertime’ and ‘Me & Bobby McGee’. In fact, I would probably vote for Janis in the majority of ‘Summertime’ match-ups. But not against Mahalia Jackson, and not against… Billy Stewart.
    I’m afraid I would have to call a 7-vote margin of victory a blowout. But, hey, not even close to a shutout, and that’s the really important thing.
    DEBBIE, I’m looking forward to your feedback on ‘American Pop’. I think you’ll really like that scene where the Rock Chick in the movie (I’ll call her Janis Slick… or maybe Grace Joplin) sings ‘Summertime’ to Little Pete. It’s a good movie for fans of Rock music and animation.
    1. Well, damn! I guess you’re right; it IS a blowout. 🙁 Since I love Janis, it’s hard for me to admit that! Oh well…
      I haven’t had the chance to watch “American Pop” yet, but am looking forward to it. Maybe next week. Thanks for telling me about it. Have a good weekend!
