Finally, a manufactured observance I can get behind.
To my fellow Spunky Old Broads:
Too bad I missed the kick-off on February 1st, but thanks to Donna at yadadarcyyada for pointing it out.
In 2020, for my 65th birthday, I celebrated one of the coolest, spunkiest broads of all time, Ilona Royce Smithkin, who was turning 100 that year. Sadly, she passed away in 2021, but what a glorious life she had!
Betty White, another fabulous S.O.B., left us on New Year’s Eve, 2021, a few weeks before her 100th birthday.
Then there’s my favourite spunky old broad. We met in 1976 and remained close until her death in 2021. There was a 20 year age difference between us, but we were true soul sisters. R.I.P. Corrie! Your passing has left a huge hole in my life.
How’s this for spunk? Donnalou Stevens with a joyous celebration of older ladies!

What? That’s fantastic! Great videos… And Ilona Royce Smithkin, I think she’s my favorite. What a free spirit. I just love her.
Isn’t it though? 😀 Yes, Ilona was truly special. Love the eyelashes!
I haven’t heard of Spunky Old Broads month before. Love it!
Carol, there are so many of us, we need a whole month to celebrate! 😀
Count me in! Happy to be a SOB!
Me too! It certainly beats the alternative. Thanks, Renée. 😀
Well done to all of them, and to you. Keep it going!
Best wishes, Pete.
Thanks, Pete. I try! 😀
P. S. Took your advice and got a light therapy device. Seems to help a bit.
Glad to hear the SAD lamp helped a bit. I use mine for about 4 hours on the dull afternoons, until it gets dark outside. I have it placed to the side of the computer, and on a fairly low setting. Like anything, it seems to work better on some days than on others.
How do I qualify to be a SOB? I want to join!
I think, any woman over 60, who has an adventurous spirit, qualifies automatically! 😀
Hi Debbie – great to see the photos and to know the Spunky Old Broads link … wonderful – here’s to us all … cheers Hilary
Old boy, yes. Spunky? Stretching the definition, methinks…
Debbie,
What a hoot! I loved your featured SOBs and the two videos were wonderful, especially enjoyed Donnalou’s hilarious song. 😀 Age is a just a number, one’s true age is reflected by how one lives! Thanks for the smiles, my friend.
What a great post, Debbie! These ladies prove that getting older is not the end of the world. Rock on and be spunky!
I love this post! I never heard of the first lady but she is spunky. Betty White is Betty White and the musical video with the older ladies is great. I love these men who know how to dress and love what the one man said, “You’re lucky to get old” which is true. Despite pain and operations etc… one is lucky because death didn’t grab us when we were young like so many others, less fortunate. Excellent post.
Thanks, Birgit! 😀 We are indeed lucky to get old. It certainly beats the alternative. Ilona was a Polish immigrant, artist and bon vivant who left a large impression on the world.
What a heartwarming post. You made me smile.
Have a fabulous day and rest of the week, Debbie. ♥
I’m glad you enjoyed the post, Sandee. 🙂 Something to chase away the winter blues!
I was just listening to your podcast. Lovely anecdotes. Luke’s story made for a heartening story.
The S.O.B. list is so inspiring and gorgeous. Loved Ilona’s video. She was so charming and I loved that bit about talking to her body, which I do too. And taking care of her eyelashes. So epic. :))
Have heard this one by Donnalou Stevens. Cute and funny.
This is a great post Debbie.
Have a fabulous month ahead! <3
Hi Natasha, I’m glad you enjoyed the post! Something to chase away those winter blues. 😀 Thanks for listening to the podcast. I will add more dog stories in future. Wishing you a fabulous rest of the month, as well. Cheers!
