There are two “Battles” per month, on the 1st and 15th. (Some of us choose one date OR the other. Mine are scheduled for the 15th only.) Votes will be tallied and posted the following week. ♫ This battle features a 1960s classic, reimagined. ♫
HISTORY
“Remember (Walking in the Sand)“, also known as “Remember“, is a song written by George “Shadow” Morton. It was originally recorded by the girl group The Shangri-Las, as their debut single in 1964. It became a number five hit on the Billboard Hot 100 and number nine on the Cashbox R&B chart. It also hit number fourteen on the UK Singles Chart, and became more successful in the UK when reissued on several occasions in the 1970s.
Billy Joel, an unknown working as a session musician at the time, played piano on the original demo recording of the song and has playfully claimed that Morton failed to pay him his $67 union scale fee for the performance. The Shangri-Las’ recording placed #395 on Rolling Stone‘s 500 Greatest Songs of All Time list in 2004. Billboard named the song #26 on their list of 100 Greatest Girl Group Songs of All Time. – WIKIPEDIA

AEROSMITH
Aerosmith is an American rock band formed in Boston, in 1970. Their style, which is rooted in blues-based hard rock, has come to also incorporate elements of pop rock, heavy metal, and rhythm and blues, inspiring many subsequent rock artists. They are sometimes referred to as “the Bad Boys from Boston” and “America’s Greatest Rock and Roll Band”.
“Remember (Walking in the Sand)” is the third track from their sixth studio album, “Night in the Ruts”, released in 1979. It was a minor hit, reaching #67 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
VS
JEFF BECK AND IMELDA MAY
Geoffrey Arnold Beck (born 24 June 1944) is an English rock guitarist. Much of Beck’s recorded output has been instrumental, with a focus on innovative sound. His releases have spanned genres ranging from blues rock, hard rock, and an additional blend of guitar-rock and electronica.
In 2010, Beck recorded a live tribute album to guitarist Les Paul, called “Rock and Roll Party”, featuring Irish singer Imelda May, among other notables. “Walking In The Sand” is the 18th track. The album was released in 2011.

I like Aerosmith, but I have a Jeff Beck bias. Imelda has great vocals too. So Jeff gets my vote.
I vote for Aerosmith as well. Never been a big fan of the rock band but their version is what I prefer, especially their take on the bass line.
I’m torn as I like both, but Jeff Beck’s guitar and Imelda May’s voice win.
Jeff Beck for sure
Debbie,
At first glance, I thought for sure I’d go with Aerosmith in this battle but I really loved the sound of JEFF BECK & IMELDA MAY. Incidentally, I do not remember the 60s song which btw is fabulous! Great battle!! Please join me in my Heart and Soul #BoTB Showdown whenever you have a spare moment. Have a bandtastic week, my dear!
It is a great song, for sure! 🙂 And, I’m thrilled to see the battle has become more even, now. Another vote for Jeff and Imelda. Thanks, Cathy!
Gotta be honest, not one of my Shangri-Las faves. That said, I enjoyed Imelda more that Steven Tyler. And thus, my vote for Beck and co.
Jeff and Imelda thank you! This is turning into a real contest now. 🙂
Two votes for Jeff Beck (from myself and The Cute One)
TWO votes for Jeff Beck. Well, alright! He might still have a chance, now. Thank you, Mary, and thanks also to The Cute One. 🙂
This song by the Shangri-Las was on the charts when I was in middle school in Merrillville, Indiana. During lunchtime kids were allowed to assemble in the gym as any who wished could dance on the gym floor to popular songs during that era. When this song was played a few of the looser young girls danced rather provocatively to the song which cause quite a stir. Thereafter the gym floor lunchtime dancing was discontinued. That’s what I remember about this song.
Give my vote to Jeff Beck. The guitar was decent the female vocal captured the spirit of the song better for me.

Tossing It Out
Thanks for sharing that fun memory, Lee! Bunch of party poopers running your middle school. 😀 Nice to see another vote for Jeff Beck. He’s lagging behind.
Howdy, DEBBIE ~
Well, if The Shangri-Las were eligible, they’d be getting my vote without the slightest hesitation. (Love the seagulls screeching in the background!)
But between the two contestants, I’ll give my BOTB bote to AEROSMITH.
I didn’t feel that Jeff Beck’s version with its one-minute musical introduction was too slow in getting started. I felt the song started at the 00:01 point, when it… “started”. (Have we really reached the point in modern society’s ‘immediate gratification’, ‘split-second technology’, and ‘soundbite mentality’ where a one-minute instrumental introduction to a song seems like a lot of wasted time?!?!)
Nevertheless, I gave my bote to Aerosmith. Primarily because, as we’ve discussed before, I’m not a fan of that ‘Female School Of Screamin’-Singin”, which Imelda May (whoever the heck she is) seems to be a graduate from.
Incidentally, although I no longer usually do BOTB installments on the 15th of each month, I made an exception this time because today is the birthday of one of my all-time best friends, who was killed by a car thief in 1989. So, I decided to put together a Battle that relates to him in a couple of ways, in honor of his birth.

STMcC Presents BATTLE OF THE BANDS
Hi Stephen, The Shangri-Las’ original version likely would have won hands down. It’s a favourite of mine as well. 🙂 Agreed, there’s some great music to be heard in intros, and they deserve consideration. You and I have different opinions about powerful (or, in your terms, screaming) female vocals, but that’s what makes these battles interesting. Another vote for Aerosmith! P.S. I enjoyed your BOTB tribute and story.
Nice one, Debbie!! I’d totally forgotten this song and in truth, I never knew Aerosmith covered it — but those old dudes (lol) get my vote today.
Thanks, Debbie!
Glad you like, Cherdo! The old dudes still have some life in ’em. don’t they? 😀 Another vote for Aerosmith. Thank you kindly.
I liked the vocal better on the Jeff Beck version, plus, you know, Jeff Beck, so that’s my choice.
Oh yes, I do know, Jeff Beck. 🙂 And, he appreciates your vote. Thanks, John!
Aerosmith is my choice and I agree with, Janet that Beck’s version is a slow starter. Excellent song selection, Debbie!
Thanks for voting, Eugenia! Aerosmith gets another one. 🙂
I like Aerosmith’s version better. I waited too long for something to happen with Beck’s. One of my favorite songs.
First vote goes to Aerosmith. Thanks, Janet! 🙂
