Queen + Adam Lambert #RMF2019

Queen is an iconic British rock band, formed in London in 1970. Their classic line-up was Freddie Mercury (lead vocals and piano), Brian May (lead guitar and vocals), Roger Taylor (drums and vocals) and John Deacon (bass guitar).

While their earliest works were influenced by progressive rock, hard rock and heavy metal, the band gradually ventured into more conventional and radio-friendly works by incorporating further styles, such as arena rock and pop rock.  – WIKIPEDIA

I’ve put together a playlist of my favourite Queen songs for the Rocktober Music Festival,
hosted by Mary at Jingle Jangle Jungle. Have a listen and tell me which ones you like!

After the death of Freddy Mercury in Nov. 1991, Queen carried on with compilation albums. Then, in 2004, they began a collaboration with singer Paul Rodgers (Free, Bad Company), which lasted until 2009.

On May 20, 2009, Queen performed “We Are the Champions” live on the eighth season finale of American Idol, with winner Kris Allen and runner-up Adam  Lambert providing a vocal duet. Little did we know, this was a harbinger of things to come!

Soon after the finale, Brian May indicated he was considering Lambert as a frontman for Queen. He had become interested after watching Lambert’s audition for American Idol, where he performed “Bohemian Rhapsody”.

In November 2011, Lambert joined Queen for a performance at the MTV Europe Awards in Belfast where Queen received a Global Icon Award. The following month, discussions began with Lambert for him to front Queen in concert.

On June 30, 2012, Queen + Adam Lambert played their first full concert in Kiev, a joint show with Elton John for the  Elena Pinchuk ANTI AIDS Foundation.

Queen and Adam Lambert are currently on a year-long world tour, organized after the success of the film, Bohemian Rhapsody.

    1. That seems to be everyone’s favourite. 😀 Queen’s light show was the most amazing one I’ve ever seen! And, I’ve been to many concerts over the years. Thanks for coming by!

  1. Oh my gosh, I am soooooooooooooooooo jealous! I really love Queen and with Adam Lambert too! Soooooooo awesome. Thanks for sharing! You’re duh best! This is awesome!

  2. When I saw Lambert and Allen perform with Queen live on American Idol, I was struck by what a fantastic performance it was. Both singers were a natural perfect fit with this iconic band. Later, when I heard that Lambert was performing with Queen professionally, I was first surprised but then tickled. He has much the same larger than life personality that Mercury had and certainly he has the pipes! They are a great combination and I hope they continue. Thanks for the retrospective. This made my morning.

  3. Love Queen, and Lambert! Great post. I remember watching Adam back then when I watched Idol and knew he was a ringer for Mercury. It was meant to be that Queen would discover him there. He’s Freddie reincarnated, lol. 🙂

    1. I’m glad you enjoyed the post! 🙂 Yes, it seems like fate that Queen and Adam found each other. A perfect fit! ?
Thanks for coming by. Happy Thanksgiving!

  4. I honestly can’t think of a more perfect fit for post-Freddie Queen than Adam Lambert, and I wasn’t aware that they also collaborated with Paul Rodgers. Your concert photos are gorgeous! Thanks for the playlist! I will be listening to it, along with other participants’ selections, this weekend while I do my making and cleaning!

    1. Thank you so much, Kim! 🙂 I’m glad you enjoyed the photos and articles. It’s a long weekend for you as well, yes? Here, we have Thanksgiving on Monday, but it’s not nearly as fun as yours is, in November. Cheers!

  5. Hi Debbie – I’ve always loved Queen … and did enjoy the film – thought it was interesting as well as giving Freddie his due via Adam … short and sweet comment! Cheers Hilary

    1. Thanks for dropping by, Hilary. I’ve missed you! 🙂 Queen is such an iconic band and there’s no replacing Freddie. As Adam said, he’s not trying to do that, but rather pay tribute. And, he does it very well. I’m glad you enjoyed the post. Have a good weekend!

  6. Not being exactly a Queen addict, I will say Tie Your Mother Down was horribly underplayed. I thought Adam was an excellent choice for the band, on a par with choosing Tom Hiddleston for Loki.

    1. Tie Your Mother Down is a great song! And, you’re right; it doesn’t get played nearly enough. 🙂 Adam is the perfect choice to front Queen in the 21st century. Fantastic singer and entertainer! Thanks for coming by, Chris.

  7. I’ve been a Queen fan for what feels like decades. It’s hard to choose a favourite track – a toss up between Bohemian Rhapsody for its musical artistry, and Who Wants To Live Forever for the images it evokes; not just the scene from ‘Highlander’.

After Freddie’s death, it was hard to see who could ever do him justice. At the tribute concert, I was impressed by George Michael and Zucchero, although Annie Lennox came closest. I have to admit – Adam Lambert is a worthy successor. On a side note, soon after his death, a local pub where I lived, called ‘The Queen’s Head, changed its sign from a traditional painting of a monarch to Freddie’s image.

    1. Hi Roland; I’m a huge fan of the Highlander TV series, but agree that Who Wants To Live Forever is about much more than that. Kind of bittersweet, considering Freddie’s demise. Zucchero is one of my favourite musicians! We had occasion to see him live a couple of years ago. Amazing voice! ? I don’t remember the tribute concert but will look for it on Youtube. Surely, it must be there. Adam Lambert was definitely the right choice to front Queen in the 21st century! ? As he said, he’s not trying to replace Freddie. He’s paying homage. Love the Queen’s Head Pub story; a fitting tribute, indeed! 😀 Thanks so much for coming by!

  8. Howdy, DEBBIE ~
Back in the era of Licorice Pizza (LPs), I owned 2 Queen albums that only occasionally found their way to my turntable. So, obviously, not a huge fan here. But I do dig the majestic style of ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ (even if I’ve heard it more than enough times at this point – along with ‘Hotel California’, ‘Brown-Eyed Girl’, and some others I could name).

My favorite Queen song is ‘YOU’RE MY BEST FRIEND’ – that is the song that inspired me to buy the album ‘A Night At The Opera’. But another big favorite, far less known but from the same album, is ‘I’M IN LOVE WITH MY CAR’. That song tickled my funny bone, and I remember I used to go around singing the following lyrics to myself on a near daily basis:

Told my girl I’ll have to forget her,
Rather buy me a new carburetor.
I’m in love with my car,
    Gotta feel for my automobile.

I still chuckle just reading those lines!

I hope to post a second Rocktober blog bit late tonight or very early in the morning. I actually have a theme now, which induces greater interest for me. I got me a plan! 😉

STMcC Presents BATTLE OF THE BANDS

    1. I don’t think anyone ever gets tired of hearing Bohemian Rhapsody! 🙂 You’re My Best Friend gets played to death here, on classic rock radio. It’s way more pop than rock, in my opinion (in other words, not among my favourites), but at least it’s cheerful. I’m In Love With My Car was written and sung by drummer Roger Taylor. Fun stuff! 😀 I’ll add it here. Thanks for coming by, Stephen! Cool that you have a theme. See you soon!

    2. Hmmm…. That’s interesting. Because here in the U.S. – the Western states I’ve lived in, anyway – ‘You’re My Best Friend’ didn’t really get a lot of airplay after its initial stay on the Billboard charts. I’d hear it every once in awhile, but rarely. And I haven’t heard that song now in probably at least ten years.

Odd how programmers decide what to play, what to overplay, and what to ignore. There were a lot of great hits in the ’70s that I never, ever hear anywhere anymore.

      ‘Stephen T. McCarthy Reviews…’

      1. I guess there are regional preferences, but it’s more likely you don’t listen to Classic Rock radio stations. They usually play music from the ’60s to the ’90s. Even into the early ’00s, now. Whoever thought of the band Green Day as “Classic” rock? ?

        1. No, I don’t listen to Classic Rock radio anymore, but I did for many, many years and in L.A. and Phoenix, they very rarely played ‘Best Friend’. When they played Queen, it was always ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, ‘We Are The Champions’, or ‘Another One Bites The Dust’. They didn’t even play ‘Crazy Little Thing Called Love’ very often, and that was Queen’s BIGGEST hit – 4 weeks at #1. Damned if I can understand it!

Yeah, I most definitely would NOT consider Green Day to be “Classic” Rock. I do think of Green Day as something, but I’m pretty sure you wouldn’t want me to type that word here. 😉

          1. We hear Crazy Little Thing Called Love a lot, too. As for Green Day, you’re obviously not a fan. 😀 Personally, I like them, but they aren’t “Classic” rockers, by any stretch of the imagination.

  9. Fabulous post and love, Queen! Even though hard to fill the shoes of Freddy Mercury, Adam Lambert is a great choice, IMO. Wow! Thanks for sharing the photos and music!

  10. I know nothing about International bands or world music. My world is limited to Hindi movie songs, especially from the 50s and 60s. I guess it is about time I must expand my taste in music.

  11. You lucky lucky lucky lady! Queen’s one of my all-time favorite bands and I adore Freddie Mercury. Saw Adam Lambert right from his audition for American Idol to the day he finished as a runner up. I can only dream of one day seeing Queen perform live. “Who wants to live forever” is among my top 10 Queen hits. Thank you for posting this, Debbie! Absolutely made my day. So I took a longer-than-necessary break from work to enjoy this – and every moment well worth it. Sigh. So happy!

    1. I’m so glad you enjoyed the post, Vidya! ? We were fortunate to get those tickets (at a ridiculous price, but worth every penny), as the concert sold out fast. And, you should take more of those “longer-than-necessary” breaks. 😉 Cheers!

      1. Well, you’ve got me bingeing on my stash of Freddie Mercury music! Can you believe I have all their audio cassettes? Adore the group and have so many nostalgic memories associated with them. Right from the time we had the vinyl records!

  12. I am such an incredible Queen fan, I can’t begin to explain. I LOVED Bohemian Rhapsody the film and I’m blown over by Freddie’s performances. A beautiful life nipped away way to early. Sigh!

I’m going to watch your Adam Lambert videos in leisure as I’m at work right now, dear Deb. I wish I could watch them play live even though minus Freddie.

I don’t think Adam Lambert will ever manage to replace Freddie however wonderful he may be.

Thanks for sharing such a lovey post.

I wrote a small piece of fiction, errr non-fiction dedicated to the Queen recently. Do read it if you like.

Much love, for a fabulous weekend!

    1. it is sad about Freddie and there’s no replacing him. As Adam himself said, he’s not trying to do that. He’s honouring Freddie’s memory and paying tribute. 🙂 I hope you enjoy the videos, nonetheless! Thanks for dropping in and sharing the link to your story. I enjoyed it!

  13. Love Queen! I vividly recall seeing the video for Bohemian Rhapsody when it first came out. And who cannot resist singing along with that great song? Then when I was in High School, our basketball team was known for winning state tournaments. We are the Champions and We Will Rock You became a regular part of my life during that time. In my early 20’s I remember my cousin’s driving me to ‘the cabin on the Ranch’ which was really a single wide trailer out in the middle of the sagebrush hills with literally NOTHING around us but sheep. I believe that was the first time I ever heard ‘Bicycle’. Flash forward to about 10 years ago, one of my online friends that I played Rockband on XBox with on a daily basis committed suicide. After her death, we played The Show Must Go On quite a bit. The song still brings a tear to my eye (as well as Pearl Jam’s Just Breathe)

I watched American Idol the year that Adam Lambert competed. I think he is a good addition to the band. I don’t think anybody can ever fully replace Freddie Mercury, but Adam does a good fill-in job.

    1. We Are The Champions is big in hockey arenas and on soccer fields, too. That’s sad about your friend. The Show Must Go On is a poignant tribute. As Adam himself said, he’s honouring Freddie’s memory and paying tribute, rather than trying to replace him. Doing a fine job of it, I’d say! 🙂 Thanks for coming by and sharing your memories, Mary. Sorry for the late response, Offline issues, as well as technical problems with the website, have been a huge time suck.
