Joining Glyn Wilton‘s weekly ‘Mixed Music Bag’ once again.
Thanks for the opportunity, Glyn!
For October, we are asked to highlight music from artists whose names start with “S” or “T” My selection today is a Canadian band, whose name had a different meaning in the U.S.*, namely, The Tea Party.* In September 2011, political groups associated with the American Tea Party were trying to purchase the band’s domain name: teaparty.com, for over a million dollars. The band added the phrase “No politics… Just Rock and Roll” to their site in order to distance themselves from the political movement, and announced in February 2012 that they had not sold the domain.
HAVE YOU HEARD OF MOROCCAN ROLL?
The Tea Party was formed in 1990 by Jeff Martin, Stuart Chatwood and Jeff Burrows after a marathon jam session in Toronto. They had previously played together as teenagers in their hometown of Windsor, Ontario. They named their new band The Tea Party, after the infamous hash sessions of famous Beat generation poets Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac and William Burroughs.
Regarded as a progressive rock band, The Tea Party’s style fuses “blues, industrial rock, and psychedelic–progressive rock with Middle Eastern influences. The band has described their style as “Moroccan Roll“. Tuonela magazine called it “emotive alternative rock, with hints of grunge and touches of oriental music”.
In October 2005, The Tea Party disbanded due to creative differences, with Martin abruptly announcing he was beginning a solo career. However, they reunited in 2011 for a concert tour. In December of that year, during a show in Montreal, the band announced they would hopefully record a new album in 2012 and that the break-up was over. Martin confirmed earlier implications by stating that “The Tea Party is back for good”.
“Walking Wounded” was first released in November 2000, as a Canadian promotional single, with a video filmed in Havana, Cuba. It is a complex composition, using 72 tracks and featuring a choral and string quartet. Jeff Martin claimed it was about a time in his life he’s glad is over.
“Walking Wounded” is the 8th track from The Tea Party’s sixth album, “The Interzone Mantras” (October 2001). It was named after William S. Burroughs’ book of short stories, “Interzone”, and the band’s interest in eastern mysticism and philosophies.
The Interzone Mantras sold 17,300 copies in Canada in its first week. Although not as commercially successful as previous albums, it is The Tea Party’s highest charting album in Australia (debuting at #6 on the ARIA chart) and certified Gold in Canada. It was also nominated for “Rock Album of the Year” at the 2003 Juno Awards.
A TEA PARTY SAMPLER:
The Tea Party has released eight albums with EMI Music Canada, selling over three million records worldwide, including four double-platinum awards, one platinum and four gold albums in Canada.
Thanks for stopping by!
I’d love to know what you think of this band.

I am unfamiliar with this group and Moroccan Roll but they have a great sound! Good choice rocknroll sistah. Rock on!
Glad you enjoyed the music, Eugi! 😀 Thanks for coming by.
I haven’t heard about Moroccan roll before, so I learned a lot from your post. I don’t think it’s my favorite genre, but I did enjoy going through the songs! Thanks for the recommendations, Debbie.
It’s a unique blend of rock and Arabic styles. 🙂 My musical tastes aren’t everyone’s cup of tea (pun intended 😀) and I appreciate you checking out this post, regardless.
I’ve never heard of that band, no surprise as I’m not a rocker. 🙂
No problem, Deb. I thought the political angle was a fun story, though. And I’m proud of The Tea Party for not selling out!
Nope, sorry I have not heard this music before today Debbie. And it is nice to hear something else besides political ads and promises. Michigan is one of several swing states so both candidates are their VPs have been here countless times and plan to be here again in the next three weeks. November cannot come soon enough.
November can’t come soon enough for all of us! Canadian news is full of U.S. election stories as well. 😝 I’m proud of the Tea Party for not selling their domain name to a political organization!
Their song Summertime hit #8 on the M10 in May of 2021….
That was a good one also! You’re the first person commenting who knows something about The Tea Party. 😎
They sound good even though I wouldn’t buy an album of theirs , they are classic rock.
The Tea Party was formed in 1990, but yes, I guess they could be considered “classic rock”. I love their dramatic music, and Jeff Martin’s baritone gives me chills. 💖 Shades of Jim Morrison! (The Doors). Thanks for checking them out, Birgit. 🙂
I enjoyed the song that you selected for today, Debbie. I was not familiar with The Tea Party, but this song sounded like something I heard before, but I was unable to place it.
Glad you enjoyed, Jim. 🙂 The other songs highlighted are good too. Thanks for coming by!
Never heard of them, but seems like my kind of musical collective. Thanks for sharing this.
Lee
I think their name probably has something to do with their lack of popularity in the U.S. 😆 They are one of my favourite bands and their live shows are amazing!
Such a good idea, love it. Great songs
Glad you enjoyed them! Thanks, Patrick. 🙂
I love it. I agree with no politics and let’s just rock and roll.
Have a fabulous day and rest of the week, Debbie. Hugs. ♥
Yes! And I was happy they didn’t sell out. 🙂 Thanks for coming by, Sandee.
I’d never heard of them before but it seems they achieved little outside of Canada and, rather weirdly, Australia. Walking Wounded is very good and I liked the video too.
I think their name (because of the American political party) likely was one reason they never made it big in the U.S. Apart from that, they aren’t concerned about it, since they are hugely popular here and, as you noted, in Australia. Front man Jeff Martin moved there years ago. Not sure why they didn’t reach the UK, but they are also popular in Scandinavia. I’m glad you enjoyed Walking Wounded. The other songs featured may also be to your liking. Thanks for coming by, Clive! 🙂
