This week’s battle highlights a long, drawn-out rivalry between two of the biggest bands in music history!
Yes, it’s THE BEATLES vs THE ROLLING STONES, duking it out over their covers of the song, “MONEY”!
HISTORY
“Money (That’s What I Want)” is a song written by Tamla founder Berry Gordy and Janie Bradford that became the first hit record for Gordy’s Motown enterprise. Recorded in 1959 by Barrett Strong for the Tamla label, the song has Strong curtly insisting that money is what he needs, more than anything else. In the US, the single became Motown’s first hit in June 1960, making it to number 2 on the Hot R&B Sides chart and number 23 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was listed as number 288 on Rolling Stone‘s “The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time”.
▼
THE ROLLING STONES
In January 1964, The Rolling Stones released their eponymous debut EP, containing covers of four R&B songs, including “Money”. It was released both to capitalise on their first Top 20 hit “I Wanna Be Your Man” and to test the commercial appeal of the band before their UK label, Decca Records, would commit to letting them record an album. Despite the rawness of the production, the EP reached no. 1 in the UK EP charts in February 1964. “Money” did not see official US release until 1972’s retrospective More Hot Rocks (Big Hits & Fazed Cookies).
VS
THE BEATLES
The Beatles recorded “Money” in seven takes on July 18, 1963, with their usual lineup. A series of piano overdubs was later added by producer George Martin. The song was released in November 1963 as the final track on their second UK album, With the Beatles. According to George Harrison, the group discovered Strong’s version in Brian Epstein’s NEMS record store (though not a hit in the UK, it had been issued on London Records in 1960). They had previously performed it during their audition at Decca Records on January 1, 1962, with Pete Best still on drums at the time. They also recorded it six times for BBC radio. A live version, taped at a concert date in Stockholm, Sweden in October 1963, was included on Anthology 1.

I am bigger Stones fan than Beatles but the Beatles version is better. Super battle!
Oh, girl, I remain a loyal Beatles fan! Gotta give them my one and only vote…I don’t want to lose my #1 fan status (yuck…I’m seeing myself dressed like Kathy Bates in “Misery”).
Happy Thanksgiving from below the lakes, friend. It’s not Canadian, but any excuse to eat turkey should be fully utilized. Grab on to it!
Hugs,
Cherdo
Lots of Beatles fans, here. 🙂 I kinda feel bad for The Stones. It’s looking like another blowout, with one more vote for The Beatles. Canadians have Thanksgiving too, but it’s only one day, the first Monday in October. Yours looks like a lot more fun! Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.
This is such a good song. “I need money, that’s what I want…” has been a theme song throughout my life, maybe that’s why I like it so much. 😉
My vote goes to the Beatles. I think that’s the one that I’m most familiar with … and most drawn to. You mentioned Pete Best in your blurb about the song and I linked over to read more about him. I really didn’t know anything about him being a part of the Beatles before Ringo and getting “canned”. Very interesting and controversial background info I discovered. Made for some eye-opening reading. Thanks for mentioning him.
I always get an education when I come to your blog… I like that!
I know you already celebrated Thanksgiving up there. Can’t remember if I reached out to wish you a Happy Thanksgiving. I know I thought about it as I have a dogsitting customer who boards her greyhound with me every year when she goes back home to celebrate. I can’t remember exactly where she’s from but it’s close to us, where you are and where I was… I want to say it’s Kitchener but I’m not sure. I’ll have to ask her.
Has the deep fried turkey fad passed?? I’m guessing it has because I’ve been trying to find places that are offering them and have been unsuccessful. I gave my big fryer away to my contractor when he was doing some remodeling on my house so now I’m looking around to find someplace to score one. Do you all do deep fried turkeys up there? It’s getting a little too late to score anything now so I’m sure we’ll just blow it off and probably do pizza or something. I can’t get excited about cooking a big meal when I have all these dogs anyway. So it will probably be pizza or maybe KFC. haha Honestly, I can’t wait for the week to be over! I’m not looking forward to it with all the pain in my shoulder. (my left shoulder and I’m left-handed so everything sucks now). I don’t know if I shared the results of the MRI but it’s not good. I have two full-thickness full-width tears and the two tendons are completely torn from the bone and retracted. It’s not repairable so I have to have shoulder replacement surgery. The surgeon’s first available isn’t until Feb25th but I’m on his cancellation list so hopefully I can get in sooner. I told him I wished he had done a replacement on the other one instead of the reconstruction surgery he did back in April. I’m not at all happy with the results since I only have 55-60 degree range of motion and can’t even raise my arm to shoulder-height, let alone over my head. He said in hindsight he wished he would’ve done a replacement too. So after the left one is done and healed, if I’m happy with it he’s going to go in and re-do the right one and do a shoulder replacement there too. So you know what 2019 is going to be for me….
2020 can’t come soon enough!
Have a good week,
talk soon,
Michele at Angels Bark
Hi Michele; Wow! That is awful about your shoulders. 🙁 I’m so sorry you have to go through this and suffer all that pain! Here’s hoping you will have relief after everything is done. Too bad it has to take so long!
We returned from our trip the night before Canadian Thanksgiving (Oct. 8). It’s not really something we celebrate, other than hubby having a day off work. (Good thing, with the jet lag!). Thanks for the good wishes, anyway. I’ve never heard of deep-fried turkey and can’t say it sounds appetizing. 😛 Don’t blame you for not wanting to put on a big spread. It’s a lot of work and you have your hands full with the dogs.
Thanks for your vote. The Beatles are running away with this one. Yeah; poor Pete Best. I can only imagine how he must have felt when the band hit it big! Talk about MONEY. 🙂
Despite all, I hope you and your Mom will be able to find some joy in the holiday. HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
This is a toughy because both are iconic bands with The Rolling Stones sounding edgier and less polished whereas the Beatles are polished and have class. It really depends on the day for me but I like The Rolling Stones for their “messier” style so I give the slight edge to them. Funny, the first time I heard this song was the 1980’s version which is different yet again.
Oh yay! Another vote for The Stones. I was losing hope. Thanks, Birgit. 🙂
Is this the 80s version you mean? It’s the only other one I know of.
DEBBIE ~
There can be no question that The Beatles’ recording is technically better. It sounds cleaner, it sounds better engineered, the musicianship sounds a bit more accomplished. Objectively speaking, The Beatles recording is clearly superior to The Rolling Stones’.
The Bible says that the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. And of course we are all familiar with the expression “filthy lucre”.
Therefore, if you ask me, a song about the love of money should sound filthy and even somewhat evil. And that is why I’m about to save you from a dreaded shutout.
The Rolling Stones sound filthy and bordering on evil with that cacophony. And I dig the sound of that harsh harmonica, too! The Stones almost sound like they’re proto-Punk, which suits the theme of this song just right.
Therefore, I vote for The Rollin’ Stones, and I declare this shutout over!
~ D-FensDogG at STMcC Presents ‘BATTLE OF THE BANDS’
At last! Thanks for breaking the shutout, Stephen. Love your reasoning, as well. 😀 The basis for the Beatles/Stones rivalry was clean-cut good guys vs unkempt bad guys. FINALLY, a vote for The Rolling Stones.
Debbie,
I wasn’t too impressed by either of the live recordings. With the Stones, the mewsic overshadowed the vocals and the Beatles’ version was the opposite. I don’t know if this is influencing (probably) my vote but I’m going with The Beatles!
Hi Cathy; Thanks for voting. That’s another one for the Beatles. Looks like The Stones are going to lose, big time!
Never a real favorite of mine. I’ll give the Beatles a slight advantage here.
This is turning into quite a rout! The Beatles are getting all the votes. Thanks for coming by.
Have to go with The Beatles on this one. A lot of the early Rolling Stones recordings sounded like chaos, and this is a prime example. On the other hand, George Martin’s work with The Fabs, not only as producer but as a member of the band, playing piano, was always clean and kept the band on its toes. The Beatles themselves were highly disciplined as musicians and had probably played this song a million times by the time they got down to recording it. Beatles it is!
Good points, all! The Beatles are running away with this one. Thanks, John.
Your post is educational. Didn’t know the Barrett Strong version. I can picture Joey Heatherton, Ann Margret, Wilma Flintstone, and Betty Rubble doing the fruguealoo (“hibby hibby hibby forward now shake”) to it. Gotta go with the Beatles as they’re near perfect like 9+/10. The singer’s voice toward the end is a bit over-emphatic. 9+ means pretty good. A vote for The Beatles.
Hahaha! I remember the fruguealoo! 😀 John Lennon did have a remarkable voice. The Beatles get another vote. Thanks, G Dogg.
This is a song that I’ve only heard done by the Beatles and it’s not my favorite recording that they made. Now I appreciate the song a bit more since I’ve read the background and heard some other versions.
When I first listened to the Stones version I was thinking that I prefer them. Then I listened to the Beatles again after not having heard this song for quite some time. For me it’s the Beatles with a better liking for what they did with the song.
I vote Beatles in this round.

Tossing It Out
Not many people know about The Stones’ version. That’s another vote for the Beatles. Thanks, Arlee.
I wrote an extensive, detailed post once, proclaiming The Beatles to have been a prolific cover band. Were they current, they would have countless views on Youtube, and such… Therefore, I must proclaim The Beatles as champions of this round.
Yours is an excellent pairing, Debbie.
The Beatles were a great cover band in the early years! I love their first few albums with lots of excellent remakes. Another vote for The Beatles. Thanks, Myke.
Two strong contenders here. Two well-known groups. But only one can be the winner. I could easily vote either direction, but I think I am casting my vote for The Beatles tonight. They are just a bit more pleasing to my ears right now. Fun song!
