AI (Artificial Intelligence). We’ve all heard of it by now, yes? Many of us are wary of the implications and what the future will look like. Aside from that, are you familiar with Chat GPT?

On November 29, the story broke that Canadian media outlets are suing Open AI for illegally scraping their content to train the ChatGPT bots. The suit is potentially worth billions, but can they win?

Great post Deb. I’m afraid I’m sick and tired of A.I. robots in everything I do. I just shut them down on Microsoft Word. Ears are everywhere on us enough. I was just on hold for half an hour with one of my services. They always play depressing, what I call funeral music while on hold. I was so sick of it, I yelled out, take off this bloody funeral music. And what do you know, the music changed to Jazz! Yup, eyes and ears everywhere on us. <3
My blog was ‘Content Scraped a couple of months ago, with almost 200,000 views in a few days. I complained to WordPress, but they didn’t care and allowed the ‘scraping’. Now my imagination and creativity is available to anyone online, with no effort required by them. So I refuse to knowingly engage with AI in any form, and really do fear for the future that I fortunately will not be around to see. Sorry to be so negative, but once you remove humanity from literature, creativity, and art, they will all die.

I use Chat GPT and other AI from time to time but not for creative writing. I sometimes quote ChatGPT or Google AI, but I’ve noticed several instances where they are wrong so you have to be careful. ChatGPT 4.0 is a huge multi-layered neural network with 120 hidden layers and 86 billion neurons. I’ve created smaller neural networks with one hidden layer and about 100 neurons for optical character recognition. I guess the worst scenario according to Nick Bostrom, a philosopher and computer scientist specializing on AI, is that AI equal or surpasses human intelligence (a full brain simulation) in all aspects, so that humans become unnecessary for any tasks, and at that point (the singularity) they may decide to end humanity (Sky-Net). Anyway, it was a very interesting post.
Debbie, I had the same experience as you for your initial foray into ChatGPT as to a synopsis of my blog. I used the free, non-account ChatGPH BTW. The first time was general and when asked if it was accurate, I said “well actually it is also about walking and nature.” (Mind you, I didn’t want to be rude ya know, even though there was no human there. 🙂 So after that I got a different synopsis which was more accurate and potentially a good “About” page entry. I should have told them I posted my 2,000th post yesterday! Thank you for the fun experience. I’ll put the two versions below, but feel free to remove that part of my comment – if everyone puts their entry/ies on here you’ll run out of blog space in no time.

I read a story this weekend that they were having problems with the updated version- that it would do ANYTHING to save itself. Tests saw it trying to jump servers, lying about what it was doing, even writing a copy of itself in case it got erased! Darn scary stuff, IMHO…. Though I have had it review a post (hang on, I think that was Open AI), and there was that time a while back I had it write an “Adventures of Misty” post.
I’ve used AI to write a couple of things in a certain style for me. Then I edit what it wrote. I’m not worried about AI, but its inventors steal the work of authors to teach it to write. That’s a problem. How are the Canadian postal workers coming along with their strike? I couldn’t send a card with a little gift to my daughter. I imagine Canadian retailers and other businesses are frustrated by the strike.
My site is self-hosted, too! I had to completely remove Jetpack, and it was no loss to anyone that I did, since they’re now all about the upsell (and pricier than my web hosting company – which is amazing and not one of those cookie-cutter “supposedly-but-not-really-unlimited” cheap hosting things). NOT WORTH IT. (And yes, I told them so! LOL Would I say something behind someone’s back I wouldn’t say to their face – albeit, possibly-but-not-in-this-case, more tactfully? NO.
Anyway, this was fun! I should try the “review” prompt. I’ll get dinged on mobile speed, for sure! And do I care? NO. I write for HUMANS. (I’m not threatened by AI, mind you – but my writing is all by ME and for PEOPLE, not machines.) I’m amused by AI, occasionally, and have even found a few great ways to use it as a tool. I am a little concerned that bots are now using AI chat to appear human, and honestly, it’s getting harder to tell. I don’t think I want to talk to anyone, anymore, unless I’ve known them for years and know they keep their accounts secure. Those who are 100% certain they can tell the difference are probably at the greatest risk of being fooled. “Pride goeth before a fall.”
I considered getting rid of Jetpack after they put stats behind a paywall. Screw that! 😠 Some of their other features are still useful though, so I’m keeping it for now. Yes, I remember our conversation about hosting and know you’re not shy about telling people off. 😆

So far, I’ve been amused by AI too, but share your concerns about the bots sounding all too human. And I don’t apply it to writing either, unless you count spelling and grammar checkers. How have you been using it as a tool?

Try “Acting as a journalism professor at a prestigious university, analyze the following post and provide constructive feedback.” Then paste your post in right afterward. You can play around with the roleplaying and the request, obviously.
I like to have it pretend to be the Chair of the MFA program at a prestigious university and analyze/give feedback on my poetry. I figure if AI understands the message and the metaphors, a human reader should, also. I did this yesterday and it honed in on TWO areas that I want to improve upon and offered some interesting and reasonable suggestions – not for specific rewording, but for exercises to try. I had also asked it to look specifically for cliches and boy did it. Merciless little sucker. But try getting that out of your friends in a writing group.

I read a story this weekend that they were having problems with the updated version- that it would do ANYTHING to save itself. Tests saw it trying to jump servers, lying about what it was doing, even writing a copy of itself in case it got erased! Darn scary stuff, IMHO…. Though I have had it review a post (hang on, I think that was Open AI), and there was that time a while back I had it write an “Adventures of Misty” post.
I’ve used AI to write a couple of things in a certain style for me. Then I edit what it wrote. I’m not worried about AI, but its inventors steal the work of authors to teach it to write. That’s a problem. How are the Canadian postal workers coming along with their strike? I couldn’t send a card with a little gift to my daughter. I imagine Canadian retailers and other businesses are frustrated by the strike.

My site is self-hosted, too! I had to completely remove Jetpack, and it was no loss to anyone that I did, since they’re now all about the upsell (and pricier than my web hosting company – which is amazing and not one of those cookie-cutter “supposedly-but-not-really-unlimited” cheap hosting things). NOT WORTH IT. (And yes, I told them so! LOL Would I say something behind someone’s back I wouldn’t say to their face – albeit, possibly-but-not-in-this-case, more tactfully? NO.
Anyway, this was fun! I should try the “review” prompt. I’ll get dinged on mobile speed, for sure! And do I care? NO. I write for HUMANS. (I’m not threatened by AI, mind you – but my writing is all by ME and for PEOPLE, not machines.) I’m amused by AI, occasionally, and have even found a few great ways to use it as a tool. I am a little concerned that bots are now using AI chat to appear human, and honestly, it’s getting harder to tell. I don’t think I want to talk to anyone, anymore, unless I’ve known them for years and know they keep their accounts secure. Those who are 100% certain they can tell the difference are probably at the greatest risk of being fooled. “Pride goeth before a fall.”
I considered getting rid of Jetpack after they put stats behind a paywall. Screw that! 😠 Some of their other features are still useful though, so I’m keeping it for now. Yes, I remember our conversation about hosting and know you’re not shy about telling people off. 😆

So far, I’ve been amused by AI too, but share your concerns about the bots sounding all too human. And I don’t apply it to writing either, unless you count spelling and grammar checkers. How have you been using it as a tool?

I like to have it pretend to be the Chair of the MFA program at a prestigious university and analyze/give feedback on my poetry. I figure if AI understands the message and the metaphors, a human reader should, also. I did this yesterday and it honed in on TWO areas that I want to improve upon and offered some interesting and reasonable suggestions – not for specific rewording, but for exercises to try. I had also asked it to look specifically for cliches and boy did it. Merciless little sucker. But try getting that out of your friends in a writing group.
