ROD 1975 VS ROD 1989 | #BOTB RESULTS

WELCOME BACK TO BOTB!
It’s time to announce the results of the Aug. 15th showdown.

#BOTB results, I DON'T WANT TO TALK ABOUT IT

BATTLE OF THE BANDS (BOTB), hosted by StMcC Presents Battle of the Bands is where you listen to different recordings of the same song and vote for the one you like best. Two “Battles” per month, on the 1st and 15th. (Please note: Effective July 2017, some of us switched to once a month on the 15th. Others may opt to continue with twice a month.) Votes will be tallied and posted the following week.

This one was a real squeaker!

At first, it looked like older Rod with his “smoke and whiskey voice” (thanks, diedre, for that fabulous description!) was going to take it. Then young Rod got a rash of votes, the consensus being that version is the more emotional of the two. In the end, opinions were split right down the middle!  (Side note: Did you know that Rod had thyroid cancer in 2000 and lost his voice for almost a year after surgery? Read more about that HERE. Thanks, Mary, for the reminder.) Sooooo, it looks like I’ll be playing tie-breaker today.

Let me start by saying I’ve been a Rod Stewart fan(atic) for five decades now and love both versions of the song. I agree with those who said the earlier one is more heartfelt and less slickly produced, plus, that one is firmly engrained in memory. Here’s how the battle played out:

YOUNG ROD (1975)
Arlee, Birgit, Chris, Debbie, Mike S., Mike V., Stephen
Total: 7
~~~~~~~~
OLDER ROD (1989)
Cathy, diedre, Janet, John, Mary, Michele
Total: 6
AND THE WINNER, BY A HAIR, IS:
YOUNG ROD STEWART!
Since it was so close, I’m sharing two live performance videos, also years apart: Sing it, Rod!
Here’s a few pics from Rod’s Aug. 10 concert in Toronto, with special guest, Cyndi Lauper:
It was picked up by “Smiler”, the official Rod Stewart Fan Club publication.
  1. Debbie,
    I realize you’re getting ready for vacation, so feel free to decline or accept my lyrical challenge after your return. Anyhow, I just wanted to pop in to let you know that I nominated you. BTW, I did this forgetting about your upcoming plans. Sorry about that! Have a funtastic time!!!
  2. Debbie,
    I’m running behind and am feverishly playing catch up after a very hectic seven days. I’m now trying to throw a baby shower by the seat of my pants for DD#1. I learned none of her friends were giving her one. I get not one person can take on such a burden when strapped for money but they could come together as a group. I wish I had known sooner instead of catching wind of this from DD#2. DH & I pulled together some simple but cute decorations from Party City trying to not break the piggy bank last night and we ordered a cake from Kroger. I have only one thing left to do, order a sandwich platter from Firehouse Subs. It’ll be a quaint, intimate party with girls only. Incidentally, DD#1 is expecting a little girl in November. It’s going to be a hard walk for her being a single parent. She and the baby’s father are sorta taking a break but I think they are still close. It’s so confusing. All I know to do is pray for my daughter and granddaughter. Maybe this relationship will take on a newer more meaningful form once the baby arrives. Thanks for sharing the outcome of this battle. It surely was a close call with my vote on the wrong side. I will be battle to two battles starting next month. I’ll see you on the first!
    1. I hope all goes well with the shower and the baby and your daughter’s relationship, Cathy. Sounds like you survived the ear surgery quite well. Sorry for missing this comment until now! Heading over to your 4m post…
      1. Debbie,
        Don’t worry about not seeing my previous comment. I do that all too often, too. 🙂 The baby shower turned out nice inspite of the quick come together. There’s a new situation in my daughter’s life that’s part of an older problem that took place on Thursday. I’m telling you what a kid does if it doesn’t kill the parent, then it’s sure to make him/her stronger. I’m pulling for the latter. All I know to do is place everything in God’s hands. sigh Yes, I came through the ear tube surgery just fine. The muffledness is the only bothersome part but if things work out for the good in the end then I’ll happy to put up with this inconvenience. I’m sure it’ll improve over time. Thanks for visiting and I hope you guys have a great time on your vacation. Eat something wonderful for me and bring back lots of pictures! 🙂
    1. I don’t understand why you aren’t getting notifications, Myke. To test the process, I subscribed myself and I get an email for every new post published. Oh well, sorry you missed it!
    1. I thought it was a fitting outcome, Stephen. 😀 So eager to publish the results, I posted them a day early! 😛 Thanks for the good wishes. We’re pretty excited about the whole thing. See you in the fall!
    1. It was! Always fun to be the tie-breaker. 🙂 Thanks, Arlee. It’s nice to be missed. Oops! Looks like I posted this a day early. And here I thought it was late! 😛
