“ERODED”What’s more exquisitely eroded than ancient ruins?
THE ANCIENT RUINS AT BUTRINT, ALBANIA
A Unesco World Heritage site

Of all the ancient ruins I’ve seen in Italy, Greece and Türkiye. this spectacular site in Butrint, Albania is equally impressive! Situated on the west coast, it’s 50 km (31 miles) east of Corfu (Greek island).
Butrint has been inhabited since prehistoric times (50 000 BC) and first came to prominence as a Greek colony. Today’s large archaeological site encompasses ancient ruins covering the period from around the 8th Century BC to the 16th Century AD – more than two millennia! At the peak of its influence, the city was a major Adriatic port and the bishop’s see of Epirus.
One of these days years, I will write that travelogue, but in the meantime, here’s a taste:

Such beautiful photos. Very nice.
Thank you, Patrick. 🙂
That is really cool! Never heard of it before, but a lot of Balkan archaeology remains a study goal.
Butrint seems to be one of those “hidden treasures”. 🙂 As impressive as any ruins found in Greece or Italy.
Stunning photos, Debbie! I’ve never heard of Butrint but it looks like a lovely place to visit.
I had no idea it existed either! Albania was a port of call on our cruise in 2018, and I’m so glad we stopped there. The ruins at Butrint are just as impressive as any you’ll find in Greece or Italy.
It does remind me a bit of Ephesus, Turkey in how you look down onto the ruins.
These ruins are just as fascinating as Ephesus, Linda! I was not expecting that at all and was blown-away by this tour. 🙂
Debbie, you would not think there are that many ancient unearthed ancient cities would you?
That’s interesting, Debbie. I have never thought of visiting Albania as a tourist, but now you have got me thinking!
Best wishes, Pete.
Albania has only recently opened itself to tourism on a larger scale, Pete. It’s still a bit “rustic” compared to the other Balkan countries, like Montenegro and Croatia (both beautiful!), but definitely worth seeing. The ruins at Butrint are among the most extensive and well-preserved I have seen. There’s also a lovely natural spring and park area called the Blue Eye.
While growing up in Germany I had plenty of opportunity to travel and visit beautiful ruins in other countries like Italy, France and Greece, as well as Turkey, I’ve never been to Albania. Your photos look amazing!
It seems we have similar travel experiences! 🙂 Albania was not on my bucket list, but it was a port of call on a cruise we took. I’m very glad to have experienced it! The ruins at Butrint are among the best I’ve seen anywhere.
Hi Debbie – I’d never heard of Butrint before … but it ties in with a couple of other subjects I’m looking at. Stunning photos you’ve given us … thanks for the introduction – cheers Hilary

It is impressive. I’ve never been to Albania and I did not even know about Butrint.

That is interesting. I guess that is the reason I have not been there. They haven’t offered much opportunity until lately. When I was young Albania was completely closed. Your pioneering spirit is opening up opportunities for the rest of us.
