EFFERVESCENT #LinguisticMusings

ef·fer·ves·cent

efərˈves(ə)nt

adjective

1. (of a liquid) giving off bubbles; fizzy.
2. vivacious and enthusiastic.

“effervescent young people”

This is such a happy, upbeat kind of word, don’t you think?
It engages the lips and makes you smile!

1.  Do you have a favourite bubbly beverage? Since I’m such a wine enthusiast, that’s my preference. We always celebrate special occasions with this elixir. There are different varieties.

Champagne is the crème de la crème, produced from grapes grown in the Champagne region of France. A favourite of these is Dom Perignon, from Moët & Chandon, but the high cost makes it rarely accessible. We save it for extraordinary milestones, like our 25th and 40th anniversaries.

Note: Only wines from this region are called “Champagne,” although people tend to generalize, like any brand name (Bandaids, Coke, etc.).

Everything else is known as “sparkling wine,” which brings me to Prosecco, a reasonably-priced alternative from the Veneto region in northern Italy.

Some of these, such as Martini & Rossi, are a bit on the sweet side. I prefer the drier ones (Brut, Extra Brut), like Villa Sandi. As you’ll see in the video, Prosecco has become wildly popular.

And let’s not forget the Spanish version, known as Cava. They used to call it champagne until the French government threatened to sue. I first discovered this in Barcelona and think it tastes more like the real thing than Prosecco, but it’s all good.

Cheers! Prost! À Votre Santé! Salute! ¡Sa

2. Some people have effervescent personalities and are seeming “up” all the time. This is a little exhausting to me (and please don’t approach me in the mornings with such cheeriness, if you know what’s good for you 😉 ), but I do get that way when talking about my passions, like the one above.

Enthusiasm for a subject can be infectious! It’s a delight to listen to someone expounding with gusto on a topic close to their hearts.

Take tour guides, for example. The best ones will enthrall you with their narrations, while others who recite by rote don’t connect at all.

The same would apply to teachers. Students are bound to learn more if the presentation is lively and entertaining.

FUN FACT:
EFFERVESCENT stems from the Latin word effervescent- ‘boiling up,’ from the verb effervescent.

  1. DEBBIE ~

“Effervescent” is a wonderful word! It’s so… bubbly!

In her most recent blog bit, dIEDRE was talking about words she wears out, so I asked her what her very favorite word was and she said that currently it is “serendipity”. I told her my current favorite word is “counterintuitive”. But if I were to make a list of Top 10 favorite words, “effervescent” would definitely make my list.

I don’t drink champagne (er… sparkling wine) because I’ve had some sort of allergic reactions to it in the past. But I love being with people who are effervescent. I guess part of the attraction is because I am not naturally that way. But a woman who is effervescent automatically becomes 10 times more attractive to me, regardless of her looks.

I can be goofy ‘n’ garrulous, which some people probably occasionally misinterpret as effervescence, but actually I have too much of a deep, serious foundation to my personality for me to ever rise to the level of authentic effervescence. But I sure do like to be in the company of it. However, like you said, not TOO early in the morning. I’d definitely need my three cups of joe before I could appreciate an effervescent personality.

  2. Your poetry if effervescent, Debbie D. I’m not a wine person. I’ve had a variety of wines, but they always taste sour to me and I have a headache after drinking them so I’m given up on wine.

    Love,
    Janie

    1. Thanks, Janie! 🙂 Wine can certainly trigger headaches, especially the sweet ones. I stick to dry and extra dry. ? What’s your favourite festive beverage?

  3. Thanks for the lowdown on champagne and Prosseco Deb. Personally, I don’t care for champagne, but I don’t mind a dry Prosseco. And out of all champagnes, Dom is at the bottom of my list – thank goodness, lol 🙂

  4. Hubby and I love champagne. Not Dom though. It’s overrated as far as we’re concerned. It’s fun to try the different champagnes though. Some good ones out there.

Have a fabulous day and week, Debbie. ♥

    1. Hi Sandee, there are so many different brands of champagne. I like most that are Brut or Extra Brut. Dom is a favourite (but we can’t afford it often), because the carbonation is more subtle. Thanks for coming by. Cheers! ??

  5. A favorite BUBBLY beverage? That would be a chocolate porter I had once, called Distorter. The main thing with Distorter, pour it into the glass VERY slow. Massive head to it. Well worth it to me after the first couple soaked laps…

      1. So my review on Beer Advocate: “Once (or if) you figure out how to pour this stuff, it’s pretty good! Jet black with a head that quickly overwhelms your glass unless you pour at a trickle. Nice coffee flavor with a few more fruity elements that sneak in here and there, a more creamy feel than a lot of porters. Other than the frustration of spilling head everywhere the first three attempts, I loved it.” It sits at #4 out of 75 I’ve reviewed… cool that you found that!

  6. This is a very effervescent and interesting post, Debbie! I love champagne every now and then especially for special occasions. My fave alcoholic beverage is red wine.

    1. I’m glad you enjoyed the post, Eugenia. 🙂 Yes, champagne is so festive! ? Drinking wine (in moderation) has many health benefits. We often have a glass with dinner. Thanks for coming by!

  7. Debbie,

My favorite bubbly beverages would be soda pop of just about any flavor. Pop isn’t nearly as tasty as it was when we were little. I blame this partly on the use of corn syrup and the other part on change of recipes which might reflect the sugar substitute. I like non-alcholic Martinelli sparkling apple cider. That’s some really good stuff. We get it for our New Year’s celebration. The carbonization in the apple cider is really fizzy and tickles my noise and very yummy! As for my personality, I’d say I’m a mostly effervescent, except for when I first wake up. Sometimes I struggle to get my sunny side going but after a two cups of coffee I’m a much cheerier person. 😀

    1. You’re probably right about the pop, Cathy. I used to love Orange Crush as a kid, and now I’m more into Ginger Ale. Martinelli sparkling cider sounds like an excellent alternative to champagne! Bubbles are so festive, aren’t they? 😀 Hahaha! Love your comments about waking up. Same here! Coffee is the magic potion, for sure. Thanks for coming by, and enjoy your time off.

    1. Thank you, Arlee! 🙂 I appreciate your regular visits and comments here. Sorry I haven’t been able to keep up with you lately. I will try and do better. Cheers!
