Cup of Coffee, Debbie's Ditzy Ditties

A SONG PARODY
To the tune of Jon Bon Jovi’s “Blaze of Glory”

⭐Don’t miss the #4M playlist of actual coffee songs at the end of this post!⭐

Here’s the original, to give you the melody:

♫ Sing it with me! ♫

♫♫♫

I wake up in the morning

And I raise my weary head

Got an odd pain in my shoulder

Drag my old bones out of bed

I don’t know what the time is

But it’s always much too soon

Been a nighthawk all my life

A midnight lover

And I wanna sleep ’til noon, yeah

♫♫♫

You’re brought into this world

And they make you toe the line

But at least I’m done with that

And my time is mostly mine

Well, they tell me that I’m haunted

But they really have no clue

I’m a free spirit, baby

A nocturnal lady

So what the hell is there to do?

[CHORUS]

Wake me up with a cup of coffee

I need it now and that’s the truth

I’m waking up with a cup of coffee

Yeah it’s nice and hot

And it tastes so good

My brain goes “POW”

Call me mellow now

♫♫♫

You ask about my habits

And I offer this reply

The night for me is magic

Yes, I love the starry sky

You ask me if I’m lonely

What it’s like to be so still

Well, it gives me peace

And it makes me calm

Like nothing ever will.

[CHORUS]

Wake me up with a cup of coffee

I need it now and that’s the truth

I’m waking up with a cup of coffee

Yeah it’s nice and hot

And it tastes so good

My brain goes “POW”

Call me mellow now

♫♫♫

Yeah!

♫♫♫

♫♫♫

Each night I go to bed

As I lay me down to sleep

I yearn for pleasant dreams

Without sinking in too deep

The bed is all too comfy

And I slowly drift away

Liven’ life on my own terms

Let me wake up to the day

Through all the twists and turns

I do it my own way

♫♫♫

[CHORUS]

Wake me up with a cup of coffee

I need it now and that’s the truth

I’m waking up with a cup of coffee

Yeah it’s nice and hot

And it tastes so good

My brain goes “POW”

Call me mellow now

I’m so mellow now

Mellow now, yeah, yeah

Mellow now, mellow now

♫♫♫

I haven’t slept until noon since I was a teenager, but it sure is a nice idea!

Are you a morning or a night person?
When was the last time you slept in?

Looking forward to your comments!

  1. Love those lyrics. So cute, Debbie, along with you in cartoon form. I am a night person. Getting me up and out in the morning is a big chore. It’s a good thing I work afternoons and evenings.
    Love,
    Janie

  2. My song parodies tend to be of the one-clip, “Where did that come from” type. F’rinstance, the recent corruption of Benny and the Jets with the line, “She’s got electric boobs, I know there’s two…”

  3. Great job. I’m not a coffee drinker. Tea is my thing, although the first thing I drink in the morning is a bottle of water. Dull. I know, but for health, a good thing. No sleeping in – the old bones don’t like it. But naps – now that’s a must-have. LOL

  4. Thankfully I don’t need a cup of coffee to wake me up though I love having a nice cup of coffee in the morning. I am a morning person and the longest I’ve lain in bed is till 7 am. Having said that let me confess that I like to nod off by 11 at the very latest. And after I get up at my usual time, I make up for the lost hours by napping in the afternoon.

  5. Sleeping in, for me, means until 9am. I think I’m a morning person because of my job. If/when I retired, I have a feeling that would change, but I’m not there. I like Bon Jovi but (believe it or not) am not familiar with this song. I’ll have to listen to the coffee playlist later, as I haven’t had my coffee yet.

  6. Debbie,

I remember your “Cup of Coffee” song parody. The lyrics are fabulous! Now, to get Weird Al or someone equally talented to put it together in a mewsic video. 🙂 With a band name like Garbage I wasn’t really expecting the lead female singer to have such a soft edge to her vocals. I appreciated the introduction over my cup of coffee this morning. 😉 It’s great having you on the dance floor this week, my dear. Have a boogietastic week! xx

  7. Debbie,

Excellent song melody choice to go with your coffee song parody! You’re such a clever girl with words. 🙂 I’m going to have to share this with my readers. Now to find someone to merge the two – your lyrics with the mewsic. Now, that would be pAwesome. 🙂 I’m more of a morning person than a night owl for sure. This morning I happened to sleep in till 10am which is unusual for me during the week but I wasn’t feeling well and that’s the only reason I stayed in bed so long. Thanks for sharing your song with me. I’m quite impressed and maybe just a little envious of your talents. 😉 Have a blessed day!

    1. Hi Cathy; I’m glad you enjoyed this and thanks for sharing, as well. 🙂 Considering what you’ve been through, you needed the rest. Nothing wrong with sleeping in, if you can. I always seem to wake up around 8 am, no matter what time I get to bed (anywhere between 1 and 3 am, usually). Hence, the need for coffee. 😀

No need for envy; we all have different talents. Your sketches are wonderful and so are your photos. ♥ Thanks for dropping in and have a great weekend.

  8. Hi Debbie; I thought your parody was (is) fantastic! I smiled as I read it. I adore coffee and hate to miss a sunrise – or a sunset. Then again, there’s something so reassuring about the glimmering stars that speck the sky as gentle sentries on moonless nights. The addition of Bailey’s goes quite well on Christmas, before thirty guests arrive 😉 Although I’ve thought of a few, I’ve recorded but one parody on paper entitled “Private Summer” (to the tune of ‘Me and Bobby Magee’).

    1. I’m glad you enjoyed it, diedre. 🙂 I don’t see many sunrises, but sunsets are nice. Baileys and coffee go so well together. Good anytime, yes? I’d love to read “Private Summer”. Song parodies are such fun to write, aren’t they? Thanks for dropping in. Apologies for the technical glitch.

  9. Well, I see I’m still not being “notified of new posts by Email”. Oh, well.

Had never heard the actual song but I liked your lyrical twist on it, DEBBIE.

Yeah, coffee, gotta have coffee! I’m about the least “Morning Person” I know, and on work days (Mon-Wed) I have to be up at 4:30 AM. Aaarrrggghhh! Turn heat up; get coffee — STAT!

I was a Night Person in my twenties, but now I’m a “Noon to 12:15 PM” person.

    1. My apologies, Stephen. Apparently, this subscription service won’t send out notices when I re-publish a post, even though it appears as new on the blog. Haven’t found a solution, yet, other than subscribing via RSS feed: http://feeds.feedburner.com/thedogladysden/pgFo

Yikes! I can’t ever imagine getting up at 4:30 AM. My husband has to do that as well when he’s on day shift. That would surely require GALLONS of coffee. 😮

Thanks for dropping in. Glad you enjoyed the lyrics. I sometimes republish posts from the archives when I’m too busy to write new ones. (I’m still writing, but for the April A to Z). If TV can have reruns, why not blogs? 🙂

      1. Nuttin’ wrong with reruns. Heck, my new “Reviews…” blog is really a blog o’ reruns.

I subscribed to that feedburner thingy. Hopefully that will work much better.

        1. Thanks! I was just over on the feed site and saw there was no “subscribe via email option” showing, just the different feed readers. Did you use one of those? If you prefer direct email, I have fixed it, now.

          1. I just used that one you provided the live link to in your comment above, and it indicated that I was now subscribed. We’ll see how that works. And if it doesn’t… Plan C. (Or ‘Plan 9 From Outer Space’.)

            1. We’ll see how it goes. If you’re using Firefox (i think I remember you saying that) there is another option too. Cuts down on the volume of emails. I use a similar add-on in Google Chrome. Works great!

              1. Thanks, DEBBIE! Good memory — I do use Firefox at home. Here at work, I have to use Explorer. But I’ll ask my personal I.T. guy (poor Bryan of ‘A Beer For The Shower’) about that add-on for Firefox.

  10. This is clever and my hubby can relate to the coffee. Tim Hortons would go belly up if they had to rely on me. I actually slept in on Saturday…I got up at 9am! I am more of a late afternoon, early evening gal but my brother was always a Night owl

    1. Thanks, Birgit! 🙂 I really enjoy writing these parodies. Anything later than your usual time can be considered “sleeping in”. Glad you had the chance to do that! I’m usually up by eight at the latest (after going to bed around two or three am). Dogs want breakfast. Afternoons and evenings are good too, just NOT mornings. Couldn’t survive without the coffee. How do you do it? Tea? Shot of rye? 😉

    1. Thanks, Myke. I’m being lazy. 🙂 Actually not; trying to get all of my entries for the April AtoZ Challenge completed. Leaves very little time to write other stuff, hence the reruns. If TV shows can do it…

    1. Good morning! 🙂 I’ve sometimes gone to bed around 5 am, but usually, that’s my prime sleeping time. Thanks for coming by. Enjoy your coffee.

  11. Yes, all are on my blog. I did look at your Procrastination parody, but I forgot to comment. Sorry. I was excited because I did my own. LOL.

“Where do the Socks Go” can be found in my r.a.n.t. section. Rant of 11/16/14

The Bees poem can be found by going to my Poem section. All are listed alphabetically.

The Procrastination song can be found by clicking on the “Parody” Tag. Actually, all of the above can be found clicking the same tag. I was going to list links, but your comment section didn’t like it.

Anyway, those are the few parodies I can think of off the top of my head. When I finish the one I’m working on, I’ll let you know about it. I love parody.

  12. Welcome back, Shady; I wish I could sleep all day, sometimes, but the dogs won’t let me – hence the coffee. 🙂 POT would be better, for sure, but my mug is 16 oz. and I’ll sometimes have two. Your appreciation for this little ditty is much appreciated. These are fun to write, but I’m no “Weird Al” Yankovic.

Loved your video offering! You’re right, the intro is very similar. Joe Walsh’s song came first, so perhaps Jon Bon Jovi was inspired by it?

Thanks for gracing The Den once more with your interesting repartee. Always a pleasure to read your comments! 🙂

    Rocking on! m/

  13. Hahaha! This is the best!! This So reminds me of my Other who is CONSTANTLY making parody songs while we’re driving places. While the song is on. And he’ll sing louder than it haha 😛

    1. Thanks, Jeffrey. I’m glad you like it! Coincidentally, I did a parody called “Procrastination” as well, but to the tune of Rod Stewart’s “Infatuation”. 😀 You can see it HERE. Are yours on the blog? I’d love to read them.

  14. hahaha this could be an anthem for all coffee lovers 😀 I had to listen to the song again to remember the tune again … I am so forgetful. 🙂

  15. The parody is fab..!! And so is the love for coffee..!! I am a night person.. and Coffee is the only companion that helps me through!

    Cheers

  16. This was great and a song I think we can all relate to.
I’ve done my own parodies. I’m actually working on right now I hope to release in the next week or so.
The last parody I did was “Where Do the Socks Go” Which was a parody of “What Does The Fox Say”.
My song “Procrastination” was a parody of Carly Simon’s, “Anticipation. Well, actually, I only did one verse. I keep meaning to go back and finishing the rest of the parody, but I keep putting it off.
I even did a poem parody. Emily Dickenson’s, ‘Trees’ became my ‘Bees’.

  17. I am such a night person, and it’s terrible because I cannot fall asleep early. I’m exhausted, but it’s like my body and brain won’t shut off until after midnight. Mornings are hard. This cracked me up.

  18. You’re so funny and witty with these parodies, Debbie. This was a great one! Yes, bring on the coffee! I agree on that one. So you’re a night owl, eh? I’m the opposite and a real morning person and I fade at night. The time change this week is not helping either as I was in bed after nine last night and up before five this morning.

I never sleep in unless sleeping til 7am is considered sleeping in. I’m like a farm girl, early to bed and early to rise!

  19. Ahh I would love to sleep till noon..It has been quite some time since I did that…I certainly don’t like waking up early..But work comes in the way…Loved the verses, I felt it was someone similar to me 🙂

    1. Hi, Yolanda; Back in our halcyon days, we used to see the sunrise all the time; just before going to bed. 🙂 I don’t stay up quite that late anymore. “Sleeping in” now, would be any time past 8 am. Never happens, because the dogs want breakfast. 🙂 Coffee, tea, whatever gives you that morning jolt counts. My husband drinks Diet Coke.

  20. I used to be a morning person, loved the sunrise and still do, as long as I can go back to bed and nap after viewing it. In college I always did my homework in the early mornings. Now I tend to stay up well past midnight. And haven’t slept till noon since ever! Such a waste of a good day – unless it’s a time for other bedroom fun?
Loved the lyrics, Debbie. But I don’t drink coffee – does green tea count?

    1. Thank you, Birgit. 🙂 These are such fun to write! 🙂 No kids or pets here, but we have doggie house guests all the time and they want breakfast, so 8:30 would be sleeping in for me, too. Couldn’t imagine surviving the morning without coffee, though!

  21. That is so witty! I could never do that to any tune so I find this always so clever. I am not a coffee drinker at all. I am even trying to think when I had a cup of coffee last…3 years?? My hubby would agree with you 100%. I actually slept in today. I took the day off and we have no children (except for fur babies) so I slept in until 8:30. To me, that is sleeping in.

  22. Hahahaha thanks for making my day dear Deb, Awesome parody of a great song!! How fun! Music always gets me in a bubbling mood – or at least the happy songs:-) Keep singing sweetie:-)
