Hubby and I have always enjoyed taking road trips. When my dog business was active, summers were usually too busy, so we often hit the road in September.
No crowded tourists areas, and the weather was still pleasantly warm!
In 2015, we thought it would be fun to drive all the way around Lake Ontario, scheduling several stops in the Thousand Islands area and Upstate New York.
It was a five-day excursion, Sept. 9 – 14.
This is a four-part series.

SEPT. 9
GANANOQUE
Gananoque, gateway to the 1000 Islands on the St. Lawrence River, is approx. three and a half hours east of us. We arrived in the evening.
SEPT. 10
GANANOQUE TO BROCKVILLE AND BACK
First stop that morning was the Gananoque Skydeck (aka the 1000 Islands Tower), for an overview of the entire area. It’s a 130m (400ft.) structure, located on Hill Island.
View from the Skydeck:
The bridge you see is the international border crossing from Canada to the U.S.A.
Closeup zoom lens shots:
On to historic Brockville, a half hour drive up the highway:
Canada’s first railway tunnel:
(It’s more interesting now, as they have opened the interior and added beautiful light displays.)
Back to Gananoque, where we explored Confederation Park, which has a sculpture garden and (yes! 😀 ) another antique rail car :
Sculpture Garden:
To be continued…
Next Chapter:
A 1000 Islands boat tour, including Boldt Castle,
plus downtown Gananoque and a drive along the parkway.

Love the pictures! 1000 Islands Tower looks so cool, and the view is spectacular!
Before Colin was bound to school breaks, we also loved to do our road trips in September.
We’ve never been to this area. Hubby would enjoy these old train engines.
Thanks for checking out the travelogue, Tamara! My father’s parents once lived in the 1000 Islands area (1950s and early 60s). It is so beautiful there! 💖 Your hubby and I have a love of old trains in common. 🙂 He would like Part IV of this series which includes a visit to a large train museum.
That looks like my kind of trip. I’ve been to a lot of these places but never took the trip all at once. What fun!
Lee
It was a fun road trip, Lee. You are certainly well-travelled too. 🙂
What gorgeous views and memories, Debbie. Your trip must have been a wonderful experience.
Thanks, Eugi! 🙂 It was an interesting trip. One reason I do these travelogues is to preserve those memories, so I’ll have something to relive in my old age. 😉
We were soooo close! Sigh… lol Glad you had a good time.
I’m not sure I knew you then, Mitch – this was eight years ago. The U.S. leg of the trip is even closer to you! 🙂 Thanks for coming by.
You left your first comment on my blog in February of 2015; that’s a little more than 8 years 🙂 I know you’ll be closer in part 2; I’m looking forward to seeing it.
Wow – it’s been that long? 😲 Time goes by so quickly… Anyway, it’s actually Part III that will be right in your neck of the woods. Coming October 10. 🙂
Driving around a lake would guarantee pretty scenery, I would think, and you got into historical aspects of the area. You really took advantage of learning about various parts of Canada. Good for you!
Love,
Janie
Thanks, Janie. 😀 The U. S. leg of the trip offers a lot of history as well. Stay tuned!
Hi Debbie – looks to be an amazing road trip … what fun – one I’d love to do … sadly probably won’t. Cheers Hilary
Thanks, Hilary. 🙂 It was one of our most interesting road trips. Glad I finally got around to writing the travelogue!
Seeing the views of the tree tops and little islands where the International Bridge crosses the water makes me think of Maine. What a pretty place! I’m glad you’re taking us along with you as you stroll through time dreaming about past trips and this one looks like a lovely one that I would like to travel if I were in your area. We’re fixing to do a local vacation in a few weeks. Our plans are sketching at best. We just haven’t had a lot of time to think about it with everything going on but I’m sure as we wing it, we’ll have a good time.
The 1000 Islands area offers some spectacular views. 🙂 Lots to see in the upcoming U.S. portion of the trip as well. I’m glad I finally got around to writing this travelogue! I hope you’ll have a lovely vacation, Cathy. Thanks for coming by.
I think we’ll have a nice time just kicking back and doing whatever we want, at a leisurely pace. The break from everything is going to be nice no matter what. Have a good weekend, m’dear!
What a gorgeous roadtrip. Thanks for showing off some of our country Deb. <3
Yes, it was a great trip. Glad you enjoyed it, Deb. More to come! 🙂
What a wonderful adventure. I would love for hubby and I to do this. Beautiful.
Have a fabulous day and week, Debbie. ♥
Thanks, Sandee! We’re all about the adventure….at least, we used to be. Getting more sedentary in our old age. 😉
I can see why you wanted to do that drive. There is a lot of history, and the views from that tower are fabulous.
Best wishes, Pete.
Yes, this area is known for its beauty and history. The U.S. leg of the trip is also a history nerd’s delight! Stay tuned… 🙂
Looks like a really lovely trip. 🤍🌻🌺
It was one of the most interesting. 🙂 Thanks for coming by!
