Blues Rock, Music Monday

First came the Blues, then came Blues Rock.

Blues rock is a fusion genre combining elements of blues and rock. It is mostly an electric ensemble-style music with instrumentation similar to electric blues and rock: electric guitar, electric bass guitar, and drums, sometimes with keyboards and harmonica.

From its beginnings in the early- to mid-1960s, blues rock has gone through several stylistic shifts and along the way it inspired and influenced hard rock, Southern rock, and early heavy metal. Blues rock continues to be an influence in the 2010s, with performances and recordings by popular artists.” – Wikipedia

Today I’m sharing some lesser-known favourites:

Fleetwood Mac 🇬🇧
Most of you know them as that wildly popular band from the 70s, featuring Stevie Nicks and Christine McVie,
but, back in the late 60s, it was led by Peter Green and heavily into Blues Rock.

And now, a brand new release from one of my favourite American Idol winners,
Caleb Johnson 🇺🇸

  1. Every September, where I live in upstate New York, we have a free community event called Blues on the Bridge, and this music would be right at home. I was exposed to the bluesy Fleetwood Mac through a couple I occasionally babysat for in the late 60’s and it was nice hearing that song again. My least favorite was the Joe Bonnamassa duet but any of these songs would be right at home at our BOTB.

    1. Blues on the Bridge sounds like something I’d love to attend! We’re overdue for a road trip, so I’ll keep it in mind. Thanks, Alana! 🙂

  2. Back to try again here. I love blues rock. That early Fleetwood Mac was really something, huh? Love Joe Bonamassa. And the sounds of Julian Sas (great name!) and Caleb, both I wasn’t all that familiar with so it was great to hear these cuts.

Thanks for all your love and support over the last few weeks. Means so much! <3

    1. My dear friend; Thank you for coming by, even though I know your heart is breaking! ♥ Music does have a soothing effect and I hope it helps you in some small way. Sending love and support your way!

  3. Hi Debbie!
I guess I’m not as in to Blues Rock as I thought. But, Wow! Beth Hart was awesome. I liked everything about her. What a voice! I sheepishly admit I did not know there was Fleetwood before Stevie 😉

    1. Nice to see you again, diedre! 🙂 (You know, Grammarly and the Grammer Nazi within is chafing at that small “d” Hahaha!) 😀 Seriously though, I’m happy to see you, my friend! ♥ Blues Rock has a wide range. Beth Hart is an amazing talent, and I’m glad you like her. Thanks for stopping by and have a good weekend!

  4. I’m not one for blues or blues rock, Debbie. I prefer punk/alternative and 60s garage rock/psychedelia. One of my friends was/is totally into Johnny Winter though.

    1. Hi Cathy! I absolutely LOVE Psychedelic Rock. That was MY era, all the way. ♥ (Old hippie, here). Some punk/alternative rock is pretty great, too. Thanks for coming by and have a good weekend.

    1. Caleb Johnson is fantastic! ♥ I’m so happy he’s finally coming into his own! These American Idol winners are stuck with such lightweight “pop crap” in the beginning. 😛

  5. Howdy, DEBBIE ~
Fleetwood Mac’s ‘OH, WELL’ holds a special place in my personal BOTB history book. Only once have I ever repeated a Battle, and that was Mac’s version of ‘OH, WELL’ against The Rockets’ cover. The first time I did it, I was the only person who voted for The Rockets (saved myself from what otherwise would have been a shutout).

I was in such disbelief that Mac’s original beat The Rockets’ (imo) clearly superior cover that approximately two years later, I repeated that Battle. There were more voters the second time, and F Mac won again, but it was much closer. I think the outcome in the second Battle was something like 11-7. After that, I gave up, realizing the name Fleetwood Mac was too big for a mostly unknown band to contend with.

That Beth Hart / Joe Bonamassa song made me think of Gary Moore. In 1993, I was living in a small town in Airheadzona called Prescott. One day I walked into a small record store downtown, probably looking for a Pat Metheny album, and they had an album by some Blues Rock guy playing in the store. This guy was killin’ it, so I went to the counter and asked what was playing. The employee said, “Gary Moore.” Me: “You mean Gary Moore from Thin Lizzy? THAT Gary Moore?”
    “Yeah. He plays Blues now.”
I was going to buy the album but they didn’t have it in stock, so the guy sold me the store’s own used copy. In ’93, I played that CD, ‘Blues Alive’, to death!

STILL GOT THE BLUES (FOR YOU)

      1. Hmmm…. That didn’t come out right. Not sure why the first video wasn’t ‘STILL GOT THE BLUES (FOR YOU)’ from ‘Blues Alive’ – I know I used the right URL. Anyway, DEBBIE, you can find it at YouTube if you want. That’s the song that Hart & Bonamassa made me think of.

    1. Hi Stephen! (Better late than never, yes? ) I gotta be honest. The Rockets did a great cover, but I still prefer Peter Green’s version of “Oh Well”. Has nothing to do with the Fleetwood Mac name, since I much prefer his era of the band to the 70s pop incarnation. Anyway, for those who aren’t familiar, here it is:

  6. I love the Blues/Rock genre, Debbie. I am familiar with Fleetwood Mac and Caleb, but the other bands are new to me. Thanks for sharing their great sounds. Have a great week ahead! 🙂

    1. Thanks! 🙂 Nice to see someone else familiar with Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac. We are in the minority. Probably dating ourselves, but who cares, yes?

        1. Exactly! 🙂 Most people are not aware that Peter Green was one of the founding members or that Fleetwood Mac was ever a blues-rock band.

  7. Great set of tunes. Joe Bonamassa is just the best and this duet is one of my favorites. Caleb Johnson video is outstanding. He’s getting better and better since his American Idol days. Blues and Blues/Rock are genres that I love to listen too and you have given us some great music today. Thanks for sharing. Have a blessed day.

    1. It seems we share the same taste in music, Driller. 😀 I’m glad you enjoyed the selections today. Caleb Johnson has major stardom in his future, I’m sure. Thanks for coming by and sharing your thoughts.

  8. The Boombox and I read this, and Boomie said to me, “You know, Myke, the Blues ain’t nothin’ but a good man feelin’ bad.”
We watched all your videos. Seeing the live recording of “Oh Well – Part 1” was so much fun…
Boomie says to tell you, if you’ll be his Dixie Chicken, he will be your Tennessee Lamb.

    1. Hi Myke; I’ve heard you mention the name “Boombox” before, but, who is that, exactly? Brother, son, friend, or…? 😀 I looked up Boomie’s line and see it’s a song by Little Feat. Fun stuff! Thanks for coming by!

  9. Thank you for this wonderful music on this fine day! You’ve just introduced me to two fabulous bands I’d never heard – Julian Sas and Caleb Johnson – thank you they are excellent! Can’t wait to explore their back catalogues. Joe Bonamassa and Beth Hart are already in our collection and we’ve seen them both individually when they came on tour in the the UK – love them both. Fleetwood Mac – well what can I say – the music of our youth and beyond superb. Thanks so much for this powerful start to the week – my speakers are rocking!

    1. I’m glad you enjoyed the selections, Gilly! 🙂 How great to have seen both Joe and Beth live. You’re probably one of the few who knows about the earlier incarnation of Fleetwood Mac. That was their best era, IMO. Obviously, most people would disagree and prefer the 70s version. Thanks for coming by!

  10. Debbie,

Excellent theme choice for ‘your choice song picks’ week. Fleetwood Mac is the only bad I knew instantly by name. I had no idea in their earlier days they were considered a blues-rock band. I like their 70s sounds that I grew up on better. I don’t know if I remember Christine McVie. Did she sing with Stevie? I just about didn’t recognize Caleb Johnson. I’m so glad to see you feature him. He was an pAwesome contender and a winner in 2014. I often wonder about these young talents after they leave shows like AI or The Voice. I’m glad he has a new album release and I hope it does furtastic. He has a great voice but he’s young and has lots of time to make it big. Thanks for sharing the dance floor with me this morning, my friend. Sending some southern hospitality your way by passing this summer-like heat your way. 😀

    1. HI Cathy; I’m glad you liked the topic! 🙂 Yes, Christine McVie was part of the 70s Fleetwood Mac band and married to co-founder John McVie (they have since divorced). The entire lineup: Mick Fleetwood, Christine McVie, John McVie, Stevie Nicks, and Lindsey Buckingham. Caleb is one of my favourite AI winners as well and I’m so glad he’s releasing new music! 🙂 Very few rockers make it on these talent shows, probably because they aren’t considered “mainstream” enough. Thanks for the heat! Still cool and very windy around here. Cheers!

  11. Awesome post! You featured some really great artists. My favorites here are Beth Hart and Joe Bonamassa, and Caleb Johnson. I watched that video just a day or so ago. He’s not your typical American Idol contestant, that’s for sure!

    1. Glad you liked the selections, Mary! 🙂 I was thrilled when Caleb Johnson won American Idol. It’s rare for a rocker to win any of these talent shows. I guess they’re not considered “mainstream” enough. The tide seems to be slowly turning, though. Rock is finally becoming popular again.
