WELCOME TO ANOTHER EDITION OF BOTB!
BATTLE OF THE BANDS (BOTB), hosted by StMcC Presents Battle of the Bands is where you listen to different recordings (usually of cover songs) and vote for the one you like best. There are two “Battles” per month, on the 1st and 15th. (Some of us choose one date OR the other. Mine are scheduled for the 15th only.) Votes will be tallied and posted the following week. Click HERE to view all my BOTB entries.
♫ This showdown features big-name performers covering a lesser-known, 1960s tune ♫
HISTORY
“Baby, Come Back” is a song written by Eddy Grant, and originally performed and recorded by his band The Equals, a group from North London, England. It is a mixture of rock and roll and beat, very much reflecting the London sound of the 1960s, with Grant’s Guyanese accent giving the record a distinguishing sound.
The song was first released in 1966, a year after the band formed, but did not chart. After impressive sales in the rest of Europe (it reached the top 10 in Belgium and the Netherlands) the song was re-issued in the UK on May 1, 1968. It reached #1 on the UK Singles Chart and #32 on The U.S. Billboard Hot 100. – WIKIPEDIA

BACHMAN CUMMINGS
Canadian rock musicians Randy Bachman and Burton Cummings, former front men for The Guess Who band, released an album called Jukebox in 2007. It features cover versions of songs they listened to while growing up in Winnipeg, Manitoba, in the 1960s. “Baby Come Back” is the first track. Bachman and Cummings are backed on the album by the Canadian band The Carpet Frogs.
VS

She has received 10 Grammy Awards and is listed as number 50 in Rolling Stone‘s list of 100 Greatest Singers of All Time and number 89 on its list of 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time. “Baby Come Back” is the 8th track from her 8th album, Green Light, released in 1982.

My vote goes for Bachman and Cummings because I like the modern hard rock take on the tune!
Hands down, Bonnie. Also. I thought this was going to be a totally different song. I thought it was Baby Come Back by Player. 🙂
They’re both really good. Bonnie Raitt sounds just a little better, so I’m voting for her.
Oh this pains me but I vote for Bonnie instead of the very cool Bachman and Cummings. They just sounded like they were jamming in someone’s garage whereas, Bonnie sounded more polished so she gets my vote.
Bonnie Lynn Raitt gets my vote. Much smoother, plus, she’s just too cool!
Enjoy your break!
I don’t recall this song at all. However, I am familiar with Baby Come Back by Player, which is a completely different song. I actually enjoyed both versions presented, but I think I am giving my vote to Bonnie Raitt.
I remember the original from my early teens. Bonnie Raitt’s cover had her distinctive style so I vote for her.
Debbie,
I don’t remember this song but between the two cover artists it’s BACHMAN CUMMINGS that did it for me. You’ll find my BoTB here. Have a good day and be well, my friend!
Debbie, I have a problem. I don’t like this song. Strangely, I can’t remember ever hearing it before. I shall cast my vote, however, for Bonnie Raitt. I prefer her version even if I’m not wild about the song.
Love,

Well, I’ll begin by saying that I’ve always felt Bonnie Raitt was tremendously overrated. And NOT just going by Rolling Stone’s always utterly laughable (and objectively wrong) lists of ‘100 Greatest’ This & That’s.
And this is not to say that I dislike Bonnie’s music. She’s OK. I don’t feel anything negative toward her music, but none of it has ever really impressed me in any way, either. It’s just kind of “there” and never particularly unique or special in sound.
I was already familiar with the original recording of this song, and it’s certainly my favorite of these three. But since it’s ineligible to receive my BOTB bote, I’ll give it to…
{drum roll here!}
THE GUESS WHO
Er… no. I meant BACHMAN – TURNER OVERDRIVE
Uhm… Sorry. Make that BACHMAN – CUMMINGS UNDERDRIVE
The audio quality of Bonnie’s version makes it seem a bit more vibrant, but being the politically incorrect misogynist that I am, 80% of the time I prefer male vocals to female vocals, and this is one of those times. (OK, make that 81% of the time.)

I surprised my self on this one. My vote goes to Bonnie Raitt. She puts more into the song than Guess Who, IMO.
As much as I hate to say it being a Guess Who fan, Bonnie’s was the livelier rendition…
This is a song that I know from the past and haven’t heard in many years, but I don’t remember it being by any of the artists you mentioned.
Both are good, but I got into Bonnie Raitt’s version much better. She did a fantastic job with this.
