ob·du·rate
ˈäbd(y)ərət/
adjective

stubbornly refusing to change
one’s opinion or course of action.

synonyms: stubborn, obstinate, intransigent, inflexible, unyielding, unbending, pigheaded, bullheaded, mulish, stiff-necked; headstrong, unshakable, intractable, firm, unpersuadable, immovable, inexorable, uncompromising, iron-willed, adamant, determined

“the brass were also obdurate in their opposition to having women in any combat positions”

Obdurate #AtoZChallenge 2016 The Doglady's

Take two obdurate people with alpha personalities and what do you get? Potential for trouble! Both are convinced they’re right and nobody is willing to budge. This could spell trouble for any relationship, but on the plus side, it’s never boring!

Hubby and I fit this description. Everybody said it wouldn’t last. Well, here we are, over 4 decades later, to prove the naysayers wrong!  Sure, there was plenty of storminess over the years, but, the good news is, we’ve mellowed with age. At this stage, life is too short to fight. Make love, not war! ☮

FUN FACT:
OBDURATE stems from  Latin obduratus “hardened,”
past participle of obdurare “be hard, hold out, persist, endure”

Are you an obdurate person? Is your mate?
Looking forward to your comments!

  1. Another fun word, Debbie. You sure pick great words! Obdurate just sounds stubborn and disagreeable, doesn’t it?

I agree with you that life is too short to fight and be stubborn about silly things. Let it go is my motto. I wasn’t always that way and could hang onto hurt and disappointment for ages. As a kid, I mastered in the well practiced pout and silent treatment. Hahaha!

  2. My Capricorn goat is obdurate at times wanting to get its way: such a stubborn goat! 😉 Fun video and yet in real life, probably not so at all AND not worth the fight(s)! <3

    1. Hahaha – love the stubborn goat image, Elly. 😀 We Aquarians are also known to be stubborn. I laughed at the part where the couple was arguing about dinner. This is a routine we have performed many times. LOL

  3. This is actually a word that I should use now and then instead of the other synonyms that I’ve used often.

  4. hahahaha!!! LOVE love love the hilarious movie!! So good. This is a new word to me. I guess I could be considered obdurate in some occasions but I’m pretty mellow for the most part these days. Still laughing at the clip! That’s a keeper for sure. 🙂

  5. Stubborn yes; obdurate, not really, except in things that really matter. I don’t like quarreling–I have much better things to do and so when I got sick of the quarreling, I said “Whatevah” and left.

  6. I guess I’ve been obdurate off and on when I’ve felt strongly about something. But by and large I’m pretty flexible about things.

  7. I think obdurate is probably an apt description of me and I have been described as an alpha female on several occasions 🙂 My husband on the other hand is not so much that way inclined. He will stand his ground when it’s important, but otherwise he’s pretty laid back. We’re hit our 20th anniversary in a little under 2 years, so we have a while to go to catch up with you :).

    1. Nice to know a fellow “Alpha Female”. 😀 It would be easier if one person is more mellow. Took us many years to get to that point, but we’re both that way now. (Well, him more than me. LOL)

  8. Probably would have been, but after hubby’s accident 20 plus years ago, I totally changed, mellowed, calmed. Now that you brought it up, wonder what would have happened otherwise. Ummmmmm??

  9. As you have rightly said, Life is too short. Why waste precious moments on being… ‘obdurate’?? Great choice of words for the AtoZ challenge, Debbie. 🙂
