ineptitude

 ɪˈneptɪtuːd

a lack of skill, ability, or competence.

A doctor would prove his ineptitude if he mistakenly removed a patient’s spleen instead of his kidney.
Ineptitude and incompetence are synonyms to describe people who have absolutely no idea what they’re doing.

Honestly, this is something that drives me nuts! Especially so, when the correct way is so damn obvious. Call me pedantic if you will (stay tuned for the “P” post), but it seems the level of ineptitude in this world has reached ridiculous proportions. Even worse is the laissez-faire attitude about it. This could be a generational issue, which makes me a grumpy old woman. Am I that draconian? Sometimes! See also CASTIGATE. 😉

FUN FACT:
“INEPTITUDE” stems from the from Latin ineptitudo”,
noun from ineptus” (unsuitable, absurd)

Are you an old (or young, or middle-aged) curmudgeon?
Does ineptitude make you crazy too?

Looking forward to your comments!

  1. I am a Virgo so it pretty much drives me crazy! With great control and extreme politeness I refrain from any rash actions! Some people are plain lost or dumb, I think beyond help.
Love your choice of words Debbie.

  2. I am right there with you. I try not to be impatient with people, but sometimes someone’s inability to not just do their job, but to refuse to learn how to do it well, drives me bonkers.

    1. I think it’s basically laziness and/or lack of dedication, Kimberly. Could be generational, because it seems to be spreading year after year. 😛 Thanks for visiting and good luck with the A-Z! 🙂

  3. I’ve learned to tolerate ineptitude. After all we can’t be adept at all things so I would hope that my ineptitude would be forgiven too.

  4. Right there with you! Ineptitude frustrates me a lot, particularly when the individual should really know better because they’ve already been told or shown how to do something. Grrr…!

    1. Yes, especially then, Laurel. Grrr, is right! It also drives me nuts when they don’t comprehend what the issue is and you’re explaining it perfectly clearly. Makes you want to bang your head against the nearest wall. 😛

  5. I am much more tolerant of ineptitude in others but get very angry at myself if I am that way. I agree with Tasha above about people not necessarily being stupid as the cause of the ineptitude. Often they are in a hurry, lazy or just couldn’t be bothered. They take shortcuts and hope no one will notice the ineptitude. Cool word! I am enjoying your word posts.

    1. I’m my own worst critic too, Cathy, but I never hold anyone to a higher standard than I set for myself. From my experience, most ineptitude is caused by lack of attention to detail, which certainly could be attributed to laziness. Glad you’re enjoying my posts! 🙂

  6. I get impatient sometimes, feeling time is increasingly short for me and I want things “just so”. At the same time, I think I am more and more appreciative of true kindness and I praise when I get good service. I would never, however, abuse a customer service rep because I have been in those shoes myself.

    1. Good service definitely stands out more, because it seems to be a rarity now. I always give thanks and praise for a job well done too. Abuse isn’t part of my repertoire; polite firmness works much better. 🙂 My stint in the corporate world involved dealing with (occasionally) irate customers and I quickly learned how to diffuse those situations.

    1. Interesting, Sundari. For me, it seems to be the other way around. 🙂 The older I get, the less patience I have for ineptitude. Thanks for visiting!

  7. Totally a curmudgeon here 😀 Can *not* stand ineptitude. Problem is, the world’s view on what constitutes ineptitude doesn’t seem to match mine most of the time, hahahahahahaha. Loving your A-Z, Debbie.

    1. You and me both, Guilie. 🙂 I never hold anyone to a higher standard than I set for myself, but, either I’m too particular, or, they are too incompetent. Take your pick! 😉

  8. Ineptitude makes me so crazy! What is really, really annoying is I find most inept people are not actually stupid, they just can’t be bothered to think before they do something, or sometimes do anything at all. I could rant all day! 🙂

    1. I could rant all day too, Tasha! What really makes me nuts is when they don’t comprehend what the problem is, even though it’s so damn obvious. 😛

  9. They say patience is a virtue. It is really a survival skill.

I don’t believe in letting yourself succumb to anger or ineptitude. The only time it really rises to my consciousness is when the person just does not care about their performance. Some of my attitude has to do with my life. There has always been so much underlying politics, I have always made definitions in my mind that has allowed me to tune out what was not important.

I plan to come back and watch the video. Cheers, Ann

    1. Therein lies the problem, Ann! So many people don’t give a damn about providing good service and are just skating by with the minimum of effort. I grew up with a strong work ethic and attention to detail. That seems to be lacking today. Now I really sound like an old curmudgeon, yes? 😀

  10. Once I went on a vacation alone − away from the family. The nicest thing about the vacation was; I knew where everything was in my hotel room, and I didn’t have to tell anyone where anything was. A great video, I could identify. ..Oh, did I say how much fun this is to see your email greet me every morning. I’m always curious as to what word will Debbie think of today. 🙂

    1. Well, I always used to (and sometimes still do) say “if you want something done right, you have to do it yourself.” Glad you’re enjoying these posts, Angelika. It’s my aim to entertain and nice to know I’m succeeding. 🙂 Tschüß!

  11. Not a word that I’d want applied to me, but it’s something that is far too prevalent in our society–or so it often seems.

  12. How I abhor inept idiots!! And the ineptitude is RAMPANT today. One thing though, it makes us appreciate good service, that’s for sure. I have a very low tolerance for many things and ineptitude is top on that list. Great word.

    1. Yes, it seems the level of incompetence has increased substantially over the years. Doesn’t bode well for future generations! It definitely makes us appreciate good service all the more. I’m always (pleasantly) surprised when it happens. That’s a sad comment, right there. 😛
