ACCOLADES AND REVELATIONS; THE LIEBSTER AWARD!

29 CommentsBlog-related, Friendship, Life, Relationships

It’s my honour to announce that fellow blogger and dog lover, Carol Graham, has nominated me for a LIEBSTER AWARD!  The word “Liebster”, loosely translated from German means “Beloved”, so it’s all good.  Thank you, Carol!

We bonded over the #AtoZChallenge and have much in common.  Her blog, Battered Hope, and memoir of the same name are recommended reading.  Such a remarkable, strong woman!

This award makes you work for it!  First, list 11 personal facts, then answer 11 questions by the nominator.  Next, choose 5-10  (or 11?) other bloggers to nominate and make a list of 11 questions for them.  So, here goes!  Hopefully, my non-blogging friends will find these revelations somewhat interesting as well.

  ELEVEN FACTS ABOUT ME:
[Click on red links for more]

1.  My real first name is Deborah, but only an old German aunt and my mother – when she was angry – ever called me that.

2. I am bi-national, German/Canadian (born in Germany) and bilingual, with some knowledge of  three other languages.

German Canadian heart

3.  First ocean voyage was at 9 months of age, crossing the Atlantic from Bremerhaven to Montreal.

4.  First plane ride was at 4 years old, from Düsseldorf, Germany to Trenton (military airport), Canada.

5.  I went to boarding school in Switzerland and wrote a memoir about it.

6.  I’ve lived in the same Toronto suburb since 1969.

7.  Hubby and I met in 1971, married in 1973 and are still together.

How Sweet It Is

8.  As a young adult, I attempted to forge a singing career, but my voice was mediocre at best and it didn’t work out.  Music is still one of my biggest passions.

9.  I started writing as a child and tried to turn professional in the 1970s, after studying Journalism in college.  Discouraged by constant rejection and the need to find a “real” job, I gave it up for many years.  Thanks to the internet, the muse has returned.

10.  I used to be a corporate workaholic but lost my job in the recession of 1992.  After wasting two years trying unsuccessfully to find a similar position, I  started a pet care business, which is still functioning today, albeit in a different form.

11.  A dysfunctional childhood turned me into a strong person with a “take no shit” attitude.

CAROL’S QUESTIONS:
[Click on grey links for more]

1) Can you tell me about yourself in 5 words or less?  Well-travelled, animal lover, eternal hippie/rockchick   😀
2) What are you passionate about?  Hubby, animals, history, injustice, music, travel and culture, writing
3) Do you have a Bucket List?  If so, how many items and your number one most important?  Not on paper, but in my head and they’re sorted into different categories, like travel, life goals, even rock concerts.  (Couldn’t say how many, unless I were to actually make a list.)  My number one MOST important of all, exploring Greece, was accomplished in Sept, 2013.  Dream come true! ♥
4) What is your favorite dog breed and why?  I like many breeds, but especially Dalmatians.  We had one for almost 16 years and she was the greatest dog ever!  Intelligent, independent  and beautiful.  Miss her terribly. ♥♥  Black Labs are very attractive to me, as well.  Sweet and loyal, plus their coats are gorgeous when they glisten in the sun.  While not a huge fan of Terriers in general, I adore Jack Russells.  These little dogs have big personalities and  are incredibly smart!  Mutts are wonderful too and often healthier than the purebreds.  We had two sweet little girls early in our marriage, whom we loved dearly.
5) Do you like to cook and if so, your favorite type of dishes?  I like to cook for company, but find it more of a drudgery, day-to-day.  Italian food is my favourite, especially seafood.  Linguine with shrimp and clams in a light, white wine sauce is a signature dish.

6)  What angers you the most?  Abuse, bigotry, cruelty, deception, injustice
7)  What is your biggest pet peeve? Hard to choose! One of the biggest is people who don’t scoop their dogs’ poop.  This is especially disgusting in the spring, when you see partially decomposed piles of shit everywhere!  Do they think it will melt, just like the snow??!

8)  What are your best qualities?  Empathy, Honesty, Integrity, Intelligence, Tolerance
9)  What are your worst traits, if you dare to share?  I have this perfectionist bent and often drive myself and those closest to me crazy because of it.  Tightly wound, type A personality with a touch of OCD.  Also, I am a hopeless procrastinator who works best under pressure.  Absent-minded, argumentative and getting worse with age!
10)  What is something you hate doing but have to?  Housework.  Such drudgery!
11)  How long have you been blogging?  The Doglady’s Den blog has been around since 2009, when Windows Live Spaces got taken over by WordPress.com.  I was just playing around then, but became more dedicated to it in 2012 and switched to self-hosted WordPress.org in January, 2013.

  1. You’re just a interesting as I would have expected you to be, Debbie! I had the Liebster Award once – here’s my response if anyone is interested! Well, it wouldn’t let me post an URL so if you ARE interested, go to my blog Ruminations of a Remembrancer and search the labels for Liebster Award.

    1. Thanks Kathy! 🙂 Your writing is always interesting and I’m glad we connected so often during the AtoZ Challenge.

  2. Ah…more things I learned about you that are similar. I’m German as far back as we could go. Married in 1972 and still together 🙂 My Mercedez (M is for Mercedez) if half Dalmation/half black Lab – how cool is that? I’m tightly wound and Type A! 🙂 Lots of other similarities as well — what fun!

So happy I nominated you for this award and will stay connected!

    1. That’s so interesting Carol, to have this much in common! Thanks again for the nomination. I missed the Mercedez post, but will definitely go back and read it.

  3. Congratulations Debbie!

I think it’s awesome and well deserved my dear. I knew some of these things about you like your love of dogs, travel, and music so it’s good to get to know you a little more.

Actually, my husband and I were talking about concerts the other night and he mentioned seeing you on Facebook and the concerts you’ve been to. I started telling him about you and how I met you by reading your memoir about your time in Switzerland and how I was attracted to your hippie style…I’m known as the hippie in the family too :). I went on about your travel to Greece and showed him some pictures you’ve shared.

Let’s face it, you’re one interesting lady :). Congratulations once again!

    1. Thank you so much Corina and thank your hubby as well. 🙂 This year’s concert list is pretty skimpy; that trip to Greece pretty much cleaned us out. LOL

  4. Congratulations on the award, and thank you so much for the nomination! I am honoured! It was fun reading your answers and getting to know you a little better. 🙂

  5. Debbie – congratulations!!! A to Z was such a fantastic way to meet exceptional bloggers, and I am honored that you selected me! I enjoyed reading more about you (glad I’m in good company with my annoying traits), and totally agree… People, Scoop the Poop !!

    1. Thank you Sammy! 🙂 Guess I’m not the only ornery old broad out there. 😉
You were one of the first ones who came to mind for the award. I feel we really connected and look forward to your post.

  6. Ah, housework. Don’t we all hate it? 😉 And that thing about Dalmatians is so cute. I think they are adorable. Congratulations on the Liebster <3

    1. Hi Michelle. 🙂 Thanks and I’m glad to be part of the Tribe, although my contributions can’t keep up with all of you! Have a good weekend.

  7. I loved the fact that you are so well travelled and have a pet care business. Something that I wish I will have one day 🙂 congratz on the award. 🙂

    1. Thank you. 🙂 I love travelling and the pet care business is so much better than my previous occupation – corporate slave. 😉

  8. Congratulations ! I got one too but haven’t posted it yet. It’s a difficult choice 🙂
