WHAT WAS I THINKING??!

10 CommentsBlog-related, Computers and Internet, Life

How many times have you said this to yourself?  Or these?

“What have I gotten myself into?”

“I’m way over my head!”

“Not ready for this”

“Should have left well enough alone”

Did you ever decide to do something, then become overwhelmed by the magnitude of the task?  This is what happened to me in Nov. 2012.

I was trying hard to learn new things and reading like mad and the more I read and attempted to accomplish, the higher the stress level.

Finally, a friend put it all in perspective. “Don’t try to learn everything in a couple of days.  This should be fun.”

Well, DUH!

That completely settled me down again and I came to realize that perhaps I had been too impulsive about this, not taking all factors into consideration, (like time constraints).  There’s no shame in deciding that something you thought you wanted really isn’t.

One harsh fact that slapped me in the face:  my capabilities are much less than I thought they were!  Clearly, this required a steeper learning curve and I just didn’t have the patience, time or will to pursue it.

Stressed out!

So……..instead of making myself crazy, I’m rethinking the whole scenario.N ot the ideal situation at this point in time, but, maybe, someday.

WHEW!  That feels so much better now.

  1. The thing is we can all over estimate
something that at first seems an easier
ride but like you say, there is plenty of
time to adjust if we walk before running,
and so don’t give up on the whole project
just take your time and enjoy it 🙂 🙂

Have a superb rest of weekend Debbie 😉

    1. Definitely NOT giving up; just postponing until I have gained more knowledge. I’m even learning CSS. Talk about challenging! :-p Notice the improvements on here? 🙂 thanks for the encouragement, Andro and have a great week.
P.S. speaking of CSS. I see that your page titles up top are perfectly centered. How did you do that???? I’ve tried dozens of codes and even consulted some WordPress experts, all to no avail. (Got it almost centered, at least.)

  2. I don’t always think things through like I should either Debbie mainly because I don’t quite get the whole scheme of things until I get going. Then I might realize oh crap. This is not going to be as easy as I thought.

If it’s something you realize you just aren’t cut out for then bail. Why put yourself through all of that right! Either way, life should be about enjoying ourselves and not fretting over the small stuff.

    1. Hello Adrienne;
Appreciate your comments. These are the pitfalls of having a type A, perfectionist personality. Makes one crazy. LOL Yes, this really wasn’t an ideal scenario for me, but, I definitely learned a lot and will file that away for future reference. My interests lie more in creative writing rather than marketing. You certainly are a master at it, though.
      Thanks for all your help.

  3. Normally I jump in head first and see what will happen. Like I said many times: ‘Blogging should be fun’. I’m doing that and I like it the way it is for now. Apparently I am willing to invest 2-3 hours a day in in plus some more in the weekends…
No matter how much time/frustration/money/learning you are willing to invest, it should be fun, first and foremost!

    1. I tried to become savvy by reading and learning as much as possible, but it just proved to be too much at this point in time. I became frustrated by my own limited knowledge and was also not willing to pay someone else to do it for me. After all, I was doing fine here and know now that in order to make any “real” money as a professional, you have to spend an inordinate amount of time at it. Just not feasible or practical right now. I started this blog strictly for fun and may revisit this topic in future, possibly if I ever get that book written. Then at least, I’ll have something of my own to sell. 🙂

  4. I don’t know about those quotes in the beginning because I don’t usually realize I’m in over my head until I’m half way through it. Then, once it’s over, my catch phrase is “It seemed like a completely rational idea at the time!” Haha, don’t overwhelm yourself.

    1. It DID seem like a completely rational idea at the time. LOL Thanks for stopping by. Your blog looks interesting and I’ll have a browse. Cheers!
