Welcome back! It’s time to announce results for the June 15th BOTB post

Battle of the Bands BOTB, TRAIN OF THOUGHT

BATTLE OF THE BANDS (BOTB), hosted by StMcC Presents Battle of the Bands. is where you listen to different recordings of the same song and vote for the one you like best. Two “Battles” per month, on the 1st and 15th. Votes will be tallied and posted the following week.

♫ This contest featured a female solo artist and an all-male rock band. ♫
Battle of the sexes; contralto vs baritone!

Another tight battle; I’m on a roll! 😀 At first, it looked like John Kay & Steppenwolf would coast to an easy win, but then the votes for Cher starting pouring in. Here’s how it went down:

CHER:
Dixie, Robin, Myke, Michele, Pat, Stephen (who was surprised by his own choice), Janie, 2 mystery guests
(Dear mystery guests: We’d love it if you would add a comment as well. Don’t be shy! 🙂 )
Total: 9

JOHN KAY & STEPPENWOLF:
Arlee, Angelika, Shady, Mary P., John, Jeffrey, CW Martin, Mary B., Diedre, Birgit. Mike
Total: 11

Once again, my vote won’t make a difference. Actually, I’m tempted to abstain because I love both of these artists and also both covers. Cher’s contralto voice is magnificent and her “this is who I am, take it or leave it” attitude makes her a kindred spirit. She put her all into the song.

John Kay………where to begin? That fabulous baritone rasp, delivered with a slight German accent (his native language) gives me chills, every time!  He has one of the best rock voices around (even now, and he’s over 70! ) and the band was killer, as evidenced during the instrumental parts. Who am I kidding? It has to be John Kay & Steppenwolf! Sorry, Cher. I still love you.

And the winner is:
JOHN KAY & STEPPENWOLF

There was no live version available for “Train of Thought”, so here’s the video from the contest, plus a performance video of “Snowblind Friend”. Enjoy!

  1. I enjoyed your challenge. Okay, Cher didn’t get first place but she still my girl. I haven’t met many contraltos that can do what that lady can do with her voice. Hurray for contraltos!
    Shalom aleichem,
    Patricia

  2. I’ve always had a question about the widget. How do you know who has clicked it to vote and who has not? Is there a time stamp so you can cross reference with the comments left? I’m just curious because how would you know if one person commented but didn’t click the widget, and another clicked the widget but didn’t comment?
Glad I picked the winner this time. 🙂

    1. Hi, Jeffrey; I compile a running list of everyone who commented and their votes, then compare the numbers to the widget. Some people forget to click it and as the admin, I can add them in from the back end, manually. However, if somebody clicks the widget and doesn’t comment, there’s nothing I can do about it. Theoretically, people can only click once and are blocked after that, but there are probably ways around it. I’ll likely retire the widget and just go by comments from now on. Less work for me and I wouldn’t want anyone to accuse me of rigging the contest. Not that I would! 😮 I’m glad you were part of the winning team this time!

  3. I love a tight battle. Congratulations on yours!
As for the voting widget – I vote to keep it, but tell them they have to comment if they want their vote to count 😉 I love reading comments, but that’s just me and my curious nature.

    1. Thanks, Mary; 🙂 I prefer that people leave a comment. To make things easier for myself and avoid confusion for others, I think it’s time to retire the widget. It looked cool, but it’s not worth the hassle!

  4. GREAT battle! As I said, I had a hard time casting my vote because in addition to really digging Cher’s version, I also loved John Kay’s. Such a good song choice too!
Don’t you just love a nail-biter??! I got to be the tie-breaker in my battle and that’s always fun.
I’m not sure about the widget counter. Sometimes I think people can cast multiple votes so can it really be counted on to be accurate without matching comments? I don’t know that I trust the widget counters. That’s just my opinion though…

Snowblind Friend is a good song. Thanks for that treat! 🙂

    Michele at Angels Bark

    1. Thanks, Michele. I had a few seconds of indecision there, as well. 🙂 As for the widget counter, the votes are recorded via cookies and people can’t vote more than once – theoretically. If they change browsers, then possibly, yes they may be able to, but who would bother doing that? I always count the comments too and compile a list of who voted for whom. The widget is set to anonymous voting, which probably isn’t ideal, but I didn’t want to make people log into another account. Maybe I’ll leave it out, next time, or find something better. I appreciate your comments on the subject.

  5. Hi, Shady; Cher is probably my favourite female singer, overall and I love her attitude, as It’s similar to mine. 🙂 That said, John Kay has long been one of my musical heroes. His voice and the band were both superb. Can’t deny it! Thanks for being a regular participant at BOTB and friend of The Doglady’s Den. Cheers!

    1. ? There was a moment of doubt, Birgit, but actually, I’m glad, too. Still, Cher was first with that song and she did a great job with it, regardless.
