Welcome to another edition of Battle of the Bands!
BATTLE OF THE BANDS (BOTB), hosted by StMcC Presents Battle of the Bands. is where you listen to different recordings of the same song and vote for the one you like best. There’s one battle mid month, although some may offer additional battles on the 1st. Votes will be tallied and posted the following week. (See below for further details.)
Since my recent battles have been so lopsided, I’m going with a match-up
suggested by our illustrious show runner. Thank you, Stephen!
It’s a favourite artist, competing with himself. Enjoy!
HISTORY:
“Tobacco Road” is a Blues song written and first recorded by John D. Loudermilk in 1960 that was a hit for The Nashville Teens in 1964 and has since become a standard across several musical genres.
Originally framed as a folk song, “Tobacco Road” was a semi-autobiographical tale of growing up in Durham, North Carolina. Released on Columbia Records, it was not a hit for Loudermilk, achieving only minor chart success in Australia.
Other artists, however, immediately began recording and performing the song. The English group. The Nashville Teen’s garage/blues rock rendering was a trans-Atlantic pop hit in 1964, reaching number 6 in the U.K.and number 14 in the U.S.
It was featured at the end of episode 1, season 4 of the hit television show Mad Men on July 25, 2010. – WIKIPEDIA

This was a fun tilt… Sure hate I missed it.
I’ll go with the version with The Animals. Generally I prefer Eric’s work with War, but it was just way too fast.
I’ll take the War version, being not a big bluesman. But I’ll bet the vote runs the other way.
Haven’t heard this one before. Prefer the second one.
Wow, this is a really cool battle Debbie! So fun to see Eric doing the same song so dramatically different. I like both versions. War rocks it. Love the brass especially in their version. But Eric with the Animals really serves it up. That version showcases his fab voice and the bluesy style, in my opinion, is more suited to the setting of the song. So my vote, without hesitation, goes to Eric and the Animals.
This is a perfect song (I’m listening to the Animals version again) to send me off to bed… Love it!
Have a great Sunday. I have to work tomorrow (the morning shift at the psychic fair) so it’s not all day but I move slow in the mornings and having to get up, get dressed and get going means I need to get to bed at a decent hour tonight.
I just looked at the clock and it’s 1:00AM! So much for that plan… 🙂

Great battle! I’d forgotten that there was another version of this by Eric Burdon.
In my humble opinion, Eric Burdon and War run away with this battle. I’m really interested in seeing how the numbers end up.
I’m back! Come by and vote, girl!
Ciao,
Cherdo
I vote for Eric The Younger with The Animals. The slower pace of the song suits its drama, as does his more emotive voice. Great battle, Debbie. Stephen gave you good advice.
Love,
Janie
I enjoyed hearing Loudermilk’s interpretation of his own song. I never heard that before and it was quite good. I do prefer the up tempo treatments of this song and War really took it to another energy level. My vote goes to the version by Eric and War.

I hope you get a nail-biter Battle out of this one. And so far, so good because…
….my vote goes to ERIC BURDON & WAR. That makes it 1 to 1 so far (unless someone sneaks another vote in while I’m typing this).
I like both versions of this song, but I definitely prefer the one with War. It’s got so much going on — including a terrific bass line, sax solo, and some seriously funky drumming. Love it!
I’m not a fan of most of the British Invasion artists but I’ve always liked Eric Burdon and he would be way up near the top of my list.
Good luck with the Battle. May you nearly have a tie. :^)

WOW! War really rocked it! at first I was a little put off (for maybe 30 seconds) and then I really got into it with them. That was a great morning jam 🙂
But my heart still remains with The Animals. Eric Burdon has a fantastic voice and he delivers the song in such a wonderful way.
Great song choice for today. My vote is for Eric Burdon and The Animals.
Debbie,
Cool battle! Two very different covers by the same lead singer. I like both but the one that gets my vote is Eric Burdon and The Animals. I love the bluesy flavor! Have a good weekend. Hopefully, you’ll join the 4M gang and me on the dance floor Monday! 😉
I like Eric with War better because of the tempo and the horns. Interesting battle!
