Since we’ll be attending  “The Who Hits 50” concert tonight, and it’s Roger Daltry’s birthday, I’ve chosen one of their songs. Not just any song, but a rebellious anthem for my generation, the Baby Boomers.

The Who, part of MY GENERATION

Roger Daltrey – lead vocals, guitar, harmonica / Pete Townshend – guitar, vocals/
Zak Starkey – drums / Simon Townshend – guitar, backing vocals /Pino Palladino – bass guitar

MY GENERATION

HISTORY:
[reference only – please do not vote on this one]

The Who are an English rock band that formed in 1964. Their classic line-up consisted of lead singer Roger Daltrey, guitarist Pete Townshend, bassist John Entwistle, and drummer Keith Moon. They are considered one of the most influential rock bands of the 20th century, selling over 100 million records worldwide and establishing their reputation equally on live shows and studio work.

Pete Townshend wrote this on a train ride from London to Southampton on May 19, 1965 – his 20th birthday. In a 1987 Rolling Stone magazine interview, he explained: “‘My Generation’ was very much about trying to find a place in society. I was very, very lost. The band was young then. It was believed that its career would be incredibly brief.” Townshend wrote this for rebellious British youths known as “Mods.” It expressed their feelings that older people just don’t get it. He called My Generation “The only really successful social comment I’ve ever made.”

The song was released as a single on 29 October 1965, reaching No. 2 in the UK, the Who’s highest charting single in their home country and No. 74 in America, where they were lesser known. “My Generation” also appeared on The Who’s 1965 debut album, My Generation (The Who Sings My Generation in the United States), and in greatly extended form on their live album Live at Leeds (1970).

The foregoing serves as background information only.
Now, on to the actual contest……

HOLLYWOOD VAMPIRES

Hollywood Vampires is an American rock super-group formed in 2015 by Alice CooperJohnny Depp and Joe Perry to honor the music of the rock stars who died from excess in the 1970s. The band name derives from The Hollywood Vampires, a celebrity drinking club formed by Cooper in the 1970s whose members included Ringo Starr and Keith Moon.

They have released one studio album, Hollywood Vampires (2015), featuring guest appearances by Paul McCartney, Dave Grohl, Joe Walsh and Dracula star Christopher Lee, among others. “My Generation” is the 3rd track.

VS

SLOW FEET

Slow Feet (a play on Eric Clapton’s nickname, “Slow Hand”.) is an Italian blues/rock band founded in Milan, circa 2005. Their debut album, Elephant Memory was released in 2007. “My Generation” is the 1st track.

Information on this band is skimpy, but there is a Facebook page.

  1. Congrats on finding two very different sounding versions of this song. I gotta go with Hollywood Vampires. I mean, how can I vote against Johnny Depp??? No, seriously, I actually liked it better:)

    1. Glad you enjoyed the battle, Robin. 🙂 So many fans of Johnny here. What’s not to like? Actor, Pirate, Musician…..
That’s another vote for the Vampires.

  2. First time voting here ? I usually appreciate covers that put their own spin on the original but in this case I have to vote for Johnny Depp ? no, really, Slow Feet was too slow for me. Thanks for putting these together!

    1. Welcome to The Den, Andrea. 🙂 This is such a close race. Thanks for voting. Johnny and the Vampires did a good job with it, didn’t they? BTW, I’m thrilled to have been twice nominated for the “Music and Words” award you originated. Sounds like fun!

  3. Hey Debbie,
Glad to hear you had fun at the Who concert in Toronto! Glad you are feeling well enough to get out there and start being you again!
Just wanted to let you know that I’m passing on the Music & Words Award nomination onto you. You may already be participating through someone else. Of course there’s no obligation to accept but if you’d like to, here’s a link to my post with the details. I just finished my post and it was fun to do.

    1. Yes, it’s a relief to be back to normal (almost) and the concert was great! 🙂

What a coincidence. Mary nominated me as well and I was going to choose you. You beat me to it! Thank you so much. 🙂 I will try to put something together for next week.

P.S. My commenting system automatically adds a link to your last post, so you don’t have to type it in manually

      Have a good weekend!

  4. Hi, Hello, Howdy DEBBIE ~
Oh, no contest here as far as I’m concerned. SLOW FEET by a country mile and 40 acres! The Hollywood Vampires just sounded like they were trying to do their best ‘Who’, but SLOW FEET made it their own. And, by the way, I don’t particularly care for the original by The Who, so I even like the SLOW FEET cover better’n the original hit.

In an old BOTB, I used ‘My Generation’, but I made it kind of a “novelty” Battle, where The Who’s original went up against the Todd Snider original ‘My Generation, Part 2’. And Snider is so damned funny that he actually beat The Who at their own game.

Glad you’re feeling well enough to hit the concert scene again!

    1. Hi, Stephen; This has turned into a close battle. 🙂 Your vote for Slow Feet is duly noted. I’ll be using them again in another battle. They are a great find, aren’t they?

I’m not familiar with Todd Snider, so I checked him out. Different song altogether, but that must have been a fun contest. I’ll post it here if anyone is curious about it. Thanks for dropping in and have a good weekend.

We had a blast at the concert! Roger and Pete are in great shape for a couple of old guys and Zak Starkey is even better than his father.

  5. I went with Slow Feet. at first I wasn’t into it but it really grew on me with the blues coming out. They gave their own style which I liked so they get my vote

  6. Wow. I loved the music of the second, but prefer the overall sound of Hollywood Vampires. Please give my vote to them! (Besides, I kind of have to vote for them since Johnny Depp is one of my future husbands, right? Even if it’s only in my head, LOL!)

    1. You’ll have to fight Janie Junebug for dibs on Johnny! 😀 This is turning into a tight race. Hollywood Vampires it is! Thanks for voting.

      1. LOL! Well, I don’t plan to be married to him forever. I have other musicians to get to, you know! (Yes, I know he’s primarily an actor, but most of my crushes are musicians and since he’s a musician in *this* post, that’s what I went with!)

  7. Hi, Shady; It looks like SlowFeet is surprising a lot of people. 🙂 So glad I found them! That’s another vote for the Italian blues/rock band.

I’m doing well now. Thanks for all your support! We had a blast at The Who concert the other night and there were no ill effects.

  8. Never been a big fan of The Who. As a matter of fact I constantly confuse their music with The Guess Who, BUT, I always like this song. The version by Slow Feet was good and I liked the different twist they put on it, but they failed to include the trademark stutter. Just gotta have that stutter (I think that may be what I like best about this song), so, give my vote to Hollywood Vampires.

Glad your feeling better and hope you continue to improve,

  9. I have to vote for Hollywood Vampires because in real life I am Mrs. Johnny Depp. Don’t believe what you see about some young chick he supposedly married. I’m sorry you’ve been ill. I’m glad you are here.

    Love,
    Janie

    1. Well, Mrs. Johnny Depp, it looks like the Hollywood Vampires are finally starting to catch up. 🙂 Thanks for your vote. I’m feeling much better now.

  10. Tough call here, but I will go with Hollywood Vampires, which will be the kiss of death for them, all but insuring the other will prevail… I am so bad at picking winners here.

  11. I liked the version by the Hollywood Vampires a little better than the one by Slow Feet. They were both good, and were I to listen to it in a few days, I might like Slow Feet’s version better.

    1. Thanks for choosing me, Mary. 🙂 It’s an honour and I do accept. Might take me awhile to write the post, but I’m definitely in!

  12. Ooh, I really like the Slow Feet version! It’s cool and funky. I liked the Hollywood Vampires just fine: it was close to the original but I like the different twist Slow Feet took with the song. Please give my vote to them.

And have a blast at tonight’s show!!! I saw the Who way back in the late 80s…or it might have been 1990, can’t remember now. GREAT show! Be careful though: be sure to get a ton of rest after a night of partying… We like to see you healthy! <3

    1. Hi, Michele; Many more people than I expected are choosing SlowFeet. Thanks for your vote. We had a great time at the concert and there were no ill effects. I appreciate the concern, though. ♥

  13. Hollywood Vampires gets my vote. It’s true to the original but sounds distinctive enough.
I think it also rocks more than the Cold Feet, errrr, I mean Slow Feet version.

  14. Hi Debbie – you’ve been missed. I hope you continue to recover!

Looks like “Slow Feet” for me, too. Give them my vote, please.

  15. Hi Debbie–I’ve missed the BOTB. I’m glad you’re back; be careful, though, because pneumonia can be tricky. Have your heart checked out…
Okay, I voted for the Slow Feet version. The reason? The American group was just TOO close to the original. Granted, most of the people in the group probably grew up in the same generation as The Who?, but a little originality would have been nice. I don’t remember Slow Feet. Usually, most bands in Italy start off with the San Remo music festival, but I was still there in 2005. Hmmm. At first, I thought “Dang! they’re the same, too” but then I noticed that instrumental interludes were a little different, which is why I chose them. What I don’t understand about these two groups, is WHY didn’t they put in THEIR generations music style? Oh well…
I remember when this song came out. I was in junior high school then. The world was really changing about that time and the Who actually caught that generational gap. Really? Only 74th? Everyone I knew was really tapping their feet to it, although they had to compete with folks like the Beatles and the Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan. Thank you, Debbie. 😀

    1. Hi, Mary; It’s good to be back! 🙂 No worries about my heart. They did an angiogram while I was in hospital and all is well. SlowFeet is batting 1000%, so far. Viva Italia! 😀 Thanks for your vote. I too was surprised at the low chart position in the U.S., but it was one of The Who’s earliest songs and I guess they weren’t that well known yet. It was fun to see them perform it live the other night.

  16. Not unlike the other voters, I was sure Hollywood Vamps had it in the bag. But I was intrigued with the name Slow Feet and proceeded to listen to a tune the likes of Skynyrd (Curtis Loew) or CDB would be proud of! What a treat 🙂 Nothing against keeping to tried and true, but I like the backwoods-rebel-ballad sound of Slow Feet 🙂

  17. Welcome back! I am glad to read that you are feeling better. I do hope that you were able to fully enjoy the concert!

Like the others, I at first was sold on Hollywood Vampires. They do sound quite a bit like The Who. I didn’t think that I would like Slow Feet, but they really got their groove on, and I felt it in my soul just a tiny bit deeper (is that even possible?)

After all is said and done, I find myself voting for Slow Feet.

    Great Battle. Well done!

    1. Thanks, Mary. I ‘m doing well now and we had a blast at the concert! 🙂 I can relate to feeling music in your soul; it definitely makes a difference. SlowFeet is gaining momentum. That’s three votes now.

  18. So glad you’re back in the game. Now get plenty of rest and get a whole lot better.
The Hollywood Vampires was a very faithful reproduction of the original. Nicely done.

I was a little put off by the Slow Feet version at first and then I really started getting into it as they through in neat little things. Then came the electric violin–that cinched it for me.

    I vote for Slow Feet!

    Very cool match up!
