Here we go!

Q and A
=======

What does music mean to you?

Music has always been one of my main passions in life. I even took piano and guitar lessons as a child; voice lessons as a young adult. Unfortunately, any talent was mediocre at best, so nothing came of those aspirations.

Regardless, I couldn’t live without music. It makes me feel, think, reminisce. It’s my drug of choice and produces a natural “high”. Music is always there for me, no matter what.

Angry or stressed? My remedy is hard rock or metal, played at full volume. It’s like scream therapy.

AAAAAAAHHH!!

Much better after that!

Feeling sexy?  Music can be such a turn on!
How does this strike you?
Yeah, baby……ooh yeah!

Every song I know has a memory attached.
When I hear it, the scenes play out like a movie in my head.

To paraphrase Dick Clark: Music and Words Award, The Doglady's Den

I wrote this poem about it in 2013:

Pressing stressing

Running stumbling

Let the music play

Searing fearing

Manic panic

Let the music play

Desolation

Desperation

Let the music play

Smiling happy

Loving sappy

Let the music play

Celebration

Affirmation

Let the music play

Let the music play

Let it give you peace

Let you float away

Let you find release

~~~~~
What is your first music-related memory?
Early memories go back to 1958/59 when I was 3 and 4 years old. My mother and I were living with her parents and two sisters in Germany, while my father, a Canadian army officer, was off leading a peacekeeping mission in Lebanon.
The aunts had an extensive record collection and I remember bonding with them over strains of “Volare” by Domenico Modugno. Twenty years later, I included it in my repertoire (using the original Italian lyrics – I still remember most of them), while attempting to become a professional singer. (It didn’t pan out, but that’s another story.)
~~~~~

What was the first album you purchased yourself?

By the summer of 1964, The Beatles had become the loves of my pre-pubescent life, thanks to their appearance on Ed Sullivan and the movie, “A Hard Day’s Night”. Although I didn’t get a regular allowance, my mother took pity on this mewling little girl and gave me the money to buy the soundtrack album, which I played over and over again.

~~~~~
What was the latest music you purchased?
(No online streaming or free downloads, I’m talking about cash here!)
I bought this CD at The Who concert on March 1st in Toronto. They were raising money for several charities, which you can read about HEREGreat music for a worthy cause!
Which song did you listen to last?
(No cheating, come out with the dirty pleasures!)
Haha! Actually, I just listened to “Those Were The Days” by Mary Hopkins (see above.) Hadn’t heard it in awhile. As I write this, the radio is playing “Against the Wind” by Bob Seger.  Love it and him! See more of Bob HERE.
  1. Thank you for the nomination. Sorry I’m late getting here to read your post. My visit was excellent. Seger, The Who, & Moody Blues!!! I saw TW and MB in concert… a dream come true for me.
    Congratulations, Debbie! Well done!
    1. No problem. 🙂 Thanks for dropping in and I’m glad you enjoyed the post. All of these classic rock acts still put on such great live shows! Their stamina always amazes me, since they’re in their 60s and 70s. Rock ’til you drop! 😀
  2. The first record I recall hearing as a youngster, in our home, was the self titled Elvis Presley album, with recordings from 1956. The first album I owned was “Meet The Beatles.” I saw A Hard Day’s Night at the picture show on its first run… Half of my favorite Beatles recordings came from the A Hard Day’s Night soundtrack. The most recent track I played was “I’ll Be Waiting for You” by Vince Gill and Cam.
    Great post, and… Since I’ve Been Loving You, my blogging world is a lot brighter. 🙂
    1. Hi, Myke; Sincere apologies for missing this comment! How nice that we both have such profound memories of The Beatles and “A Hard Day’s Night”. 🙂 And thanks for the compliment. That made my day, even though it’s actually many days since you wrote it.
      My knowledge of country music is limited, so I went looking for that Vince Gill song. Nice!
  3. Congrats on the award! You totally deserve it. I think nostalgia with music shows the bond that exists 🙂 Fun post Debbie! Let the music play!
  4. Thanks for nominating me. Michele had previously done so and my post goes up tomorrow on Tossing It Out.
    Looks like you and I have been on somewhat parallel musical journeys. Some great tunes here. “Those Were the Days” brings back great memories for me as well. And so many memories listening to “Since I’ve Been Loving You” back in the 70’s driving around the back roads of Tennessee with my friends. Music indeed connects us to so many things in so many ways.
    1. I saw that you were already nominated, but the more the merrier, yes? 🙂 Looking forward to your post!
      We’re not that far apart in age, so it’s no surprise we have similar musical memories. Driving around the back roads of Tennessee must have been fun. I’ve been living in Suburbia all the while, but driving around and hanging out were things we also did regularly in the 70s. Music was ever-present.
      Have a good weekend!
  5. I absolutely love your answer to the first question, What does music mean to you. What a fabulous answer. Loved your music choices too and especially your playlist. Your poem speaks of how music meshes with your life and your emotions. Wonderful! It’s so apparent that music is an integral part of your life. Your posts just ooze that fact!
    Thanks so much for accepting the nomination and playing along. Hope you had fun putting it together. I know we all had fun reading it! <3
    1. Music has always been a huge passion for me, but it’s becoming even more intense, as I get older. No doubt the nostalgia factor has something to do with that. 🙂 I’m glad you enjoyed the post, Michele. It was great fun putting it together. Thanks again for the nomination!
  6. Such a great post. I absolutely love your poem. The song selections were excellent.
    The Who is coming to Milwaukee in a few weeks. I had wanted to go, but I don’t know anyone else who is interested. And like dining out or watching a flim, going to a concert alone is not something I like to do. I feel awkward for some reason.
    I love listening to Bob Seger.
    Another great post. 🙂
    1. I’m glad you enjoyed the post, Jeffrey. 🙂 Too bad you couldn’t find someone to go to the concert with you. The Who always put on a great show. I see your post is up, as well. Coming over to check it out…..
  7. I just love taking a walk down memory lane with your blog. Thank you for accepting the award, and I look forward to reading more of your posts.
  8. Your blog is a treasure trove of musical memories, Shady. Who could be more deserving of this award? 🙂 Looking forward to your post!
    Yes, living in Europe was a wonderful experience. I was actually born there, too. We moved back and forth for the first 14 years of my life, before settling down in the Toronto area.
    I can somewhat relate to your mother’s attitude. Much of today’s music sounds like crap to me. 😛 My mother was also a fan of the Big Band sound but she enjoyed some Elvis and The Beatles as well. The Rolling Stones, not so much. 😀
    I’m glad you’ll be participating in this fun exercise. Thanks for always taking the time to write such extensive comments. There should be an award for that too. Cheers!
        1. I’m hoping Dalton Rappitoni. He reminds me of Billy Joe Armstrong. 🙂 La Porchia and Sonika are good too – should be in the top three. Who do you like, Carol?
          1. I don’t like Dalton as much as I did in the beginning. I thought he would run away with it. But now, I’m not so sure. I am totally impressed with La Porchia and Sonika. Wish Avalon would go home. Do you watch X Factor UK? Love it
            1. Avalon went home last night, along with Lee Jean. Trent and MacKenzie should go home, IMO. I haven’t seen the X Factor UK but did watch the U.S. version. It got cancelled after only a couple of seasons. The Voice is good, except for the excessive silliness between the coaches. Excellent calibre of singers, though!
              1. I will be watching last night’s show when I get home tonight. I like Trent. MacKenzie — no. We are thoroughly enjoying the X Factor UK — the talent is amazing. We tried watching the Voice a couple times – different seasons — and abhor the judge’s ego games. Will never try again. Do you think LaPorchia will ever change her hair LOL?
                1. I don’t think the X Factor UK is available here. I know what you mean about the judges on The Voice, but there too, the talent is amazing. Surely that must be a wig that LaPorchia is wearing? She did change the colour, so maybe she’ll try a different look sometime. That hair is her trademark, though. 🙂
