BLUES ROCK, #MusicMonday

Welcome to

♫ Music Monday ♫

animated band

This week’s feature is one of my all-time favourites:

 ROD STEWART

Rod was first discovered by world-famous blues singer Long John Baldry when he was only 18 years old, but his big break came when he joined the Jeff Beck Group in 1967.  Their debut album, Truth was a major success.

Rod went on to even greater heights when he and fellow bandmate Ronnie Wood joined The Faces in 1969

He also enjoyed a concurrent solo career, which continues to this day.  His signature song, Maggie May, became a #1 hit in 1971 and earned him a gold record.

Another hit from the same album “Every Picture Tells a Story”:

His success continued all throughout the 1970s and into the early 1980s, after which he experienced a drop off in popularity.  His 1988 album. “Out of Order” brought him right back into the spotlight, garnering this big hit:

This period of renewed success lasted for several years, but things slowed down again in the mid 90s.

In 2002, Rod reinvented himself and became a crooner of songs from “The Great American Songbook”.  This was so successful, that 4 subsequent albums were released, the last one in 2010.

Rod was on a roll in 2012, publishing his autobiography and releasing his first Christmas album.  He also announced that he was writing and recording songs for a new rock album.

TIME was released in May.  The old Rod is back, at last!

We had the pleasure of seeing Rod in concert more than a dozen times over the years and were never disappointed.  He is the quintessential showman!

Do you like Rod Stewart?  What are some of YOUR favourite songs?

Looking forward to your comments!

  1. I remember when I was still in high school, listened to Rod Stewart ‘I don’t wanna Talk About It’ and then ‘All for One, One for All’ Rod singing with Brian Adam and Sting…. I love his songs so much at that time until I couldn’t forget about it… (^^)

  2. Rod’s earlier bluesy stuff is such a huge departure from what I grew up hearing, which were his more mainstream hits. My favorite songs by him were Young Turks and Baby Jane, from the 80s 🙂

    1. I guess that means I’m a lot older than you, Kim. 😉 In addition to his 60s and 70s output, Rod had some great material in the 80s and 90s as well. Thanks for visiting.

      1. I’m not too sure about that! I’m turning 43 this year…..but the 80s were when I was 10-20, and the decade I remember most about my childhood.

        1. Ah to be 43 again! 🙂 I’m 58, so I was right. 😉 Every era has both good and bad music. It’s probably a sign of age, but I’m not too crazy about some of the stuff that passes for music these days! LOL Thanks for dropping by once more. Cheers!

  3. I love Rod Stewart…not too crazy about his latest stuff but his older music is awesome!

You have my favorite song…Stay With Me! Thanks for putting it on here. I was jamming it out!

Have a great new week my friend!

    1. Glad you enjoyed this selection, Corina. 🙂 Rod’s older material is also my favourite. “Sailing”, especially. ♥ Thanks for visiting and hope you have a great week too.

  4. I used to play Maggie Mae on the guitar, but not all those great instrumentals. I don’t really play guitar, I just messed with my sister’s guitar and self taught myself a few chords. This was my favorite song to play, although watered down quite a bit.

Rod Stewart is a great artist to focus on. I had to change my character’s name after I found out his daughter’s name is Alanna Stewart. I guess my mind thinks like his. 😉 Thanks for the memories.

    1. Maggie May is such a classic! Rod sings it every show, without fail. 🙂 He has had an amazing career, yet he gets trashed in the media a lot. I think he’s proven he can sing anything, any style! Thanks for sharing you memories, Joyce. 🙂

  5. Whooohooo I do like a bit of Rod Stewart you chose a nice selection there I’m glad you included his way career too 😉

    Have a stewpottastic week 😉

  6. Hi Debbie,

Ah…what a lovely way to start my Monday morning listening to Rod’s songs. I prefer the slower and softer numbers of his like “I wish you love” and “Forever young” from these lots 🙂

Nice write up about him and I think you’re lucky to see him in concert so many times! Thanks for sharing these numbers with us , and have a lovely week ahead 🙂

    1. Happy New Week Harleena! A fellow Rod fan; that’s great! 🙂 He certainly occupies a special place in my musical heart; soft, hard and in between, (song styles, that is 😉 ). We certainly are lucky to be living in the Toronto area. It’s a real “Music Mecca”. All the greats put on concerts here. Thanks so much for visiting.
