Welcome back! It’s time to announce results for the Sept. 15 BOTB post

Battle of the Bands BOTB Knockin' on Heaven's Door

BATTLE OF THE BANDS (BOTB), hosted by Far Away Series and StMcC Presents Battle of the Bands. is where you listen to different recordings of the same song and vote for the one you like best. Two “Battles” per month, on the 1st and 15th. Votes will be tallied and posted the following week.

This one pitted German-born rock musician John Kay & (his band) Steppenwolf
against Toronto-born jazz/blues musician Jeff Healey and his band.

This song has long been a favourite of mine and I’m a fan of all three artists shown. After so many lop-sided battles, I wanted to find a pairing that would be closely contested and this did not disappoint! The lead passed from John to Jeff and back again numerous times, currently sitting at 12 to 11 for Jeff. This is the first time my vote could decide the outcome. so here goes….

Confession time: I’m a John Kay super fan(atic) and his voice always gives me chills! He’s one of my musical heroes, along with John Lennon and Eric Burdon. Much as I love Jeff Healey’s version and the Road House movie, I choose John Kay & Steppenwolf. Which means….

THE WINNER IS:

JOHN KAY & STEPPENWOLF / THE JEFF HEALEY BAND

#BOTB TIE!

12 votes each!

  1. DEBBIE ~
Congratulations on your TIE! Now ya know how it feels. Ha!-Ha! I think it was Yogi Berra who said: “A tie is like kissing your sister”. And that’s the way I feel about ’em. I’m seriously TIrEd of ’em! I like to see SOMEONE win (even if it’s not my own personal choice to win).

But after having had so many lopsided outcomes, I can easily imagine how good a tie probably feels to ya!

Well, now you’re well on yer way to figuring out what it takes to create a BOTB tie, and experience is practice and practice makes perfect. I have a feeling your future BOTB blog bits will become much more competitive from now on.

Your tie surprises me, because the last time I looked, Healey was “pushing” Steppenwolf around, and I thought maybe Kay was “born to be mad”. Glad it worked out this way for you.

To me, the ABSOLUTE ULTIMATE BOTB OUTCOME is when MY OWN VOTE determines the winner. I’ve had that happen a few times and boy-oh-boy is THAT fun! But second best, to me, is when my own vote can save my choice from a loss (i.e., I make ’em tie!)

    See ya next time, DEBBIE.

    1. Ties are kind of unsatisfying, Stephen, as you said, but yes, I am glad that I was able to save John from losing. He got many of the later votes. I’m hoping the next battle will be close as well. 🙂

  2. Well, now if I were the president of this land
You know, I’d declare total war on The Pusher man

Hi, Debbie the Doglady! Yessum, my favourite won: that being you, Debbie the Doglady, as host of this evenly matched BOTB contest. Congratulations! John Kay has one of the most easily recognizable voices in rock and I never tire of listening to it. John Lennon and Eric Burdon are also among my music heroes. This was indeed a fun battle and I am very happy that it ended in a tie. Everyone’s a winner. Thanks, dear Debbie, and have a super Monday!

    1. “The Pusher” is one of my favourites, Shady, along with the movie “Easy Rider”. (I’ll be talking about that at Jingle Jangle Jungle this Sunday.) Here’s another great video, also from “Live in Louisville”: LOVE THAT VOICE!!
