After a couple of close battles, this one was more decisive. While some of you enjoyed the Mallorcan sounds of Los Beta, most of your preferred the more traditional Cuban flavour presented by Zucchero. Here’s how it looks, without my vote:

LOS BETA
C.W. Martin, Diedre, John, Myke, Shady
TOTAL: 5

~~~~~
ZUCCHERO:
Angelika, Arlee, Birgit, Cathy, Dixie, Janie, Mary, Michele, Mike, Pat, Stephen
TOTAL: 11
I first heard the Los Beta version of Guantanamera in March 1967, while vacationing in the Canary Islands. It has a lilting, dreamy quality that I fell in love with, so I bought the 45 and played it to death after coming home. It’s still part of my record collection and I listen to it once in awhile, instantly drifting back to that enchanted place and time. If you’d like to read more about the trip, click on the image:
On the other hand, Zucchero has long been a favourite artist. I love his passion, his style, his musicianship, his voice, everything! He makes me want to hop a plane to Cuba and order one of those festive, fruity cocktails. Decisions, decisions…
After many playbacks of each, there’s no question the Los Beta recording gives me the biggest emotional jolt. The lead singer has a beautiful voice and the languid arrangement flows sweetly. Plus, I can’t deny the nostalgia factor. It’s wonderful to relive that fabulous holiday through song! So, Los Beta get another vote, but it doesn’t help.  At least they lost to a formidable opponent!
and the winner is:
ZUCCHERO
By  5 votes
Here’s the winner, performing live in Havana, Dec. 2012:
  1. Though I did not vote in the battle, (I’m so sorry for being gone), I wanted to stop back in. Now I see you are on blog hiatus. Well, I certainly know its something you gotta do from time to time. Looking forward to your Blog2.0. Hope it’s soon.
    PS – Thanks for stopping over with some kind words. See you soon.
    1. Thanks for coming by, Jeffrey. I’m doing a complete website re-design, so it could be awhile longer. I promise it will be worth the wait. Looking forward to seeing you again, soon. 🙂
    1. Thanks, Birgit. Sorry for the later response. I’m immersed in the world of web design at the moment. The blog will be in “maintenance” mode soon. Have a good weekend. I’m sure you’re enjoying the cooler temps. 🙂
  2. Glad Zucchero won. Nice live performance!
    The memories that music evokes is usually what causes certain songs to be my favorites. I love that time-travel quality of music!
    Have a great weekend Debbie! Thanks again for the birthday wish! XOXO
  3. Hi, Shady; Yes, nostalgia is a powerful thing. 🙂 A remastered version of Los Beta’s recording may have had a fuller sound, but the arrangement and vocals would have basically been the same, so I’m not sure it would have made much difference in voting preferences. We’ll never know since Los Beta disbanded more than 40 years ago. I’m glad you enjoyed this battle as well as the previous ones. Thanks for your continued support!
  4. Hi Deb,
    I tried to post and kept getting an error. Oh well…
    I said in my comment that I don’t want to be a spoil sport but Zucchero is simply tops in my book.
    1. Sorry about that, Pat. The website has been flaky the last few days. 🙁 If it keeps on messing up, I’ll start yelling at the hosting company. Both comments came through, so I’ll delete the other one. I’m a huge fan of Zucchero myself and “Baila” keeps playing in my head, now. 😀
  5. Debbie, I agree with Lee – both artists were winners and I, too was on the right side this go around. Good battle and music! You got me wanting Mexican food again!
