Glasses
As mentioned in the last #PhotoBogChal, I’m a packrat by nature, and over the course of my six+ decades on Earth, I’ve accumulated a lot of stuff. Always reluctant to part with anything, you can imagine what my basement looks like!

Confession time (again): I have a glassware fetish! Want to keep me occupied for a while? Just take me anywhere there’s a glass display, be it a store, museum (The one in Corning, New York is fabulous!), or wherever.

At my house. you’ll find glasses for any liquid you desire: Water, wine, champagne, beer, Margaritas, martinis, brandy, liqueurs, juice, you name it!

We also have souvenir glasses, picked up during our travels. Some are just for display, but others get used regularly.

1) COLOURED CRYSTAL

My mother acquired a beautiful set of coloured crystal wine and liqueur glasses in the late ’50s that I coveted all my life (and have now – bottom image). Hubby knew how much I loved them and surprised me with a set of my own (wine and champagne) as a birthday gift, about 20 years ago (top image).

2) CRUISE LINE SOUVENIRS

Last fall, we took a 24-day Holland America Mediterranean/Adriatic cruise in celebration of our 45th anniversary. The shot glasses were freebies, but we had to pay for the Sambuca inside.

3) SOUVENIRS OF VENICE

Venice is world-renowned for its Murano Glass and has an abundance of shops that sell these colourful pieces. Our tiny gondola with the two hearts is one example. We couldn’t afford anything larger! The brightly patterned shot glasses (cheap – not Murano) are also a fun reminder of our trip.

4) OXYGEN WINE GLASSES

Hubby and I are both European-born (Italy and Germany respectively) and consider wine to be an important part of the main meal. I recently discovered these “Oxygen” wine glasses and just had to have them! The embossed blades aerate the wine and release the full bouquet. Plus, I think they’re unique and beautiful. Do you like them?

5) SPECTACLES

I started wearing glasses at the age of seven (myopia and astigmatism) and am as blind as the proverbial bat without them. For a 35-year period, I was able to wear contact lenses instead, but unfortunately, dry-eye syndrome and allergies put an end to that. Yes, I’m using old pictures here (which we’re not supposed to do), but my argument is, the collage is new. 😉 Photos are from 1968, 2013 and 2018.

  1. It seems like you like getting glasses from your travels! Not being a wine drinker, I have no idea what those new glasses would do for the taste etc. But I do know, as a beer drinker, that different glasses for different types are done for a reason!

  2. Debbie, I am lucky to only wear reading glasses so far. Prescription glasses will eventually come I expect. I love the Murano glass gondala. I have not seen much colored crystal they are beautiful. Interesting history of glasses styles. Thanks for sharing and have a great month. Sylvia D.

    1. Prescription glasses may or may not be in your future, but then again, if you get cataracts, the resultant surgery apparently corrects all vision issues. Or so the doctor told me. 🙂 The glass gondola was the most fitting souvenir, as we thoroughly enjoyed our cruise along the Grand Canal in a full-sized one. My mother obtained her coloured crystal glasses when we were in Germany, 1958/59. They undoubtedly fuelled my glassware fetish. Thanks for coming by! Wishing you a great month as well. Cheers!

  3. How fun are those glasses sets! And very beautiful. What a treasure to collect them from your travels. I love the oxygen wine glasses. I have a wine aerator I use for reds while I’m pouring it into the glass of choice. And, I love it when participants bend the rules. 🙂 Your Bitmoji is adorable. Hope your week has started well. Salute!

    1. Hi Lisa: I’m glad you enjoyed the post. 🙂 Those Oxygen glasses are being made good use of regularly. The coloured crystal is mostly for special occasions, but, we are creating more such days, “just because”. 🙂 Bitmoji’s are fun, aren’t they? 😀 We’re still in the deep freeze here, but at least the sun was out today. Hope your week is going well. Thanks for coming by!

  4. Debbie,

I love the first two photos of the itched colored glassware! It reminded me a time long ago when I used to enjoy sketching glasses and bottles in high school. I might have to try that again. Thanks for the inspiration!

    1. Thanks, Eugenia. 🙂 Coloured crystal always attracts me! ♥ There are some beautiful eyeglass frames out there and I bet you look great in yours. Love your avatar! To be honest, I really miss being able to wear contact lenses, but, such is life.

  5. Omgosh, where to begin??? I love aaalllll of these glasses and especially the ones on your beautiful face! 🙂 – Those oxygen wine glasses are the coolest and those colored glasses bring back so many great memories of my parent’s glass collection. Oh. And I love the gondola too! 😀

    1. Thanks, Karen! That’s such a lovely compliment. ♥ I’m really thrilled with the Oxygen glasses and found some more on sale. They look so cool, don’t they? And, they’re a perfect size – 12.5 oz. Most wine glasses these days are ridiculously large. My mother got her coloured crystal glasses when we were in Germany 1958/59. I think they inspired my glassware fetish. 😀 Thanks for coming by!

    1. That giant bottle was won in a raffle. 🙂 It’s been sitting there a few years now. Just a backdrop for the coloured crystal glasses in the photos. Thanks for dropping in.

  6. I clicked the Follow button and entered my email very many times, friend D … and nothing seems to work … who cares as I know how to find you … Manamana … smiles … and happy Winter … Much love, cat. PS: I wear glasses and I always look for blue glass on the ocean shore … smiles, c.

    1. Hi cat; That is very strange and I’m sorry you’re having these difficulties. Not sure what I can do without knowing the cause. 🙁 Do the posts show up in your WordPress Reader? Sea glass is so pretty! I didn’t know you wear glasses too. You must be like me and take them off for photos. 🙂 A couple of other ideas to subscribe:

Winter truly sucks and has overstayed its welcome. You must feel the same way! 🙂

Thanks for coming by and for your patience.

  7. What a great assortment of glasses. I love glasses but don’t have the room to display them all. My favorite of the ones you displayed are the oxygen. I like simple which these are but also with a ‘twist!’

    1. Nice to see you, Carol! 🙂 I’m glad you like my little collection. I was so thrilled with the Oxygen glasses, I bought another set. They’re a perfect size, too, 12.5 oz. Most wine glasses these days are way too big. Thanks for coming by!

  8. You have some impressive glassware. My wife has a lot of glassware including Hard Rock hurricane glasses from many different locales. We have a china hutch filled with glassware, most which is never used or moved from those shelves other than to dust.

I was supposed to start wearing glasses in the 3rd grade but I mostly resisted until the 5th grade–much to my own detriment. I was so afraid that I’d be made fun of that I’d take the glasses off shortly after I left my house and put them on again when I got home so that my mother would think I’d been wearing them.

For a while–back when I was touring with stage shows in the eighties–I wore contacts most of the time. Since those days It’s been back to wearing glasses. You’ll rarely find me without my glasses other than when I’m sleeping or taking a shower.

    1. My mother’s coloured crystal glasses likely nurtured this glassware fetish of mine. 🙂 I love hurricane glasses, too! We have a pair from Bally’s in Atlantic City. Yup; I can relate to the dusty china cabinet. We are making a concerted effort to use the fancier glasses more often, these days. Seems silly to have them just for show! I couldn’t get along without the glasses on my face, either, but sure do miss being able to wear contact lenses. Thanks for coming by, Lee.

  9. Now you have me wondering where my past glasses reside? I don’t recall ever throwing a pair of them away. With 20/100 vision in both eyes, I have worn glasses for 55 years.

    Those crystal glasses are awesome.

    1. Hi Myke; You’ve been wearing glasses almost as long as I have! 🙂 My childhood ones are long-gone, but I still have some from 20 years ago. My mother’s glassware fetish was obviously passed on to me. Thanks for coming by!

  10. Very nice collection of glasses, DEBBIE!

I have some cups and glasses that hold a lot of meaning for me, too, but they’re nowhere near as fancy as yours.

What I can’t figure out is how you keep those bottles filled. If those wine bottles and that bottle of Crown Royal were at my house, they’d be empty and sitting in my Recyclables bin. 🙂

    1. I’m glad you like my little glassware collection, Stephen. 🙂 As for the wine bottles, trust me, they empty pretty fast. We just keep replenishing the supply. 😀 As for the Crown Royal, that’s a 3-litre bottle (almost a gallon) won in a raffle. It will get drained eventually after we finish the smaller ones. 😉 Thanks for coming by!

  11. Oh my gosh, Debbie! Those glasses are adorable! I wish I had a china cabinet so I could display glasses like that. Thanks for sharing as always!

    1. I’m glad you liked my little collection of glassware, Bren. The china cabinet is full, but I still keep finding more. 😉 Thanks for dropping in!

  12. On my the glasses are amazing. Beautiful.
I wear glasses too. I was fine until about 40 and then I started to have issues. Last thing I take off before bed and the first thing I put on in the morning.

Have a fabulous day, Debbie. ♥

    1. Thanks! 🙂 I love the look of fancy glassware. Wearing glasses, not so much. 😛 I’m used to them, though, as I’m sure you are too, by now. Have a great rest of the week.

  13. I enjoyed your glasses post, Debbie. I can see you really do have a glasses fetish in more ways than one. What beautiful carved ones. I really like them.
I could definitely relate about wearing glasses all your life. Such a nuisance when they’d fog up in the winter and I was so helpless without them. I was nearsighted and wore glasses from seven years old and wore contacts, too though they aggravated my eyes on computers. I hated how protein would build up on them making them scratchy feeling and heaven forbid if you lost one. I had laser eye surgery when I was 48 which was totally life changing for me. Now I just need reading glasses which I don’t mind. A compromise I don’t mind making!

Great post! Nice to see you blogging again. I haven’t blogged in ages in favour of the photo a day prompts I’ve been doing. I guess it’s sort of like blogging as I write text to go with it. Wish I could do both but as long as I do something creative each day, I’m happy.

    1. Thanks, Cathy! 🙂 I love the drinking glasses, but the other ones, not so much, like you. The fogging up in winter is a pain, but even worse, is the way the frames conduct the cold right into my sinuses. This sometimes leads to brutal headaches. 😛 You must have been thrilled about the laser surgery! I wanted to do that but was told it wouldn’t work well enough for me to stop wearing glasses. Likely because the astigmatism is so severe.

I’ve been blogging quite a bit since we got back for our trip and am also doing a lot of photo posts. I love your PAD posts on Facebook! 🙂 You could make blog posts out of them if you wanted to expand your audience. That would be more time-consuming, though. Thanks for dropping in!

  14. Good for you to be organized, Debbie! There’s a glass for every opportunity, right?
Love your 1968 picture, so cute – reminds me of Jenny from Love Story, even though she wasn’t even wearing glasses.

    1. Yes; a glass for every possible beverage. 🙂 Thanks for the compliment about the 1968 photo! Must be the dark hair – just like Jenny’s.
