FORTY-TWO – WHO KNEW? HAPPY ANNIVERSARY TO US!

WHERE DID THE TIME GO??

Catholic wedding ceremony

When we got married, there was opposition from all sides and one of his aunts even cursed us!
We had been living together and decided to get hitched on impulse. I had an anti-marriage bias and this was a “now or never” type of situation.
With only two months lead time, we managed to pull together a formal Italian style reception, complete with live band and multi-course feast.
Everyone had a blast!

  1. WOW! Sorry for the late comment but a big congratulations on 42 years of marriage. I am celebrating my 2nd at the end of this month. I was single for majority of my life and sad I wont ever celebrate a large milestone but happy I am with my soul mate now. I also am blessed to have very loving inlaws.

    1. I missed this one completely! My apologies, Holli. Happy Belated 2nd Anniversary to you. 🙂 When it comes to love, I think “Better late than never” is a good adage. Bonus if your in-laws like you. Congrats!
We find it hard to believe that so much time has passed and that we’re so old. LOL Still trying to train ourselves to ask for senior discounts and such.

  2. OK first off-Happy Anniversary!!! 2nd-I had a feeling about the objections since I have a couple of female friends who are Italian and dealt with something similar. 3rd-I love the Moody Blues!!!!

    1. Thanks, Birgit. 🙂 Yup; I was the “heathen German slut”. LOL On the flip side, my mother, the snob, was upset that I shunned university to marry a blue-collar worker. My father gave no opinion at all, which I suppose was a good thing.
The Moody Blues are fantastic! ♥ We’ve seen them live three times over the years. Great performers, even now.

  3. I will have to read your post as to why there were so many objections. I know when my mom met my dad (my mom is German, my dad Canadian with Polish and German ancestry), his brother and some cousins objected and they tried to convince my dad she was a whore from Toronto (their words). My dad told them where to go. His brother even hired a P.I. and had my mom investigated. This was because she was German and she stopped some of them from coming over at 2am and drinking my dad’s booze.

    1. Oh boy, that sounds very familiar, Birgit. 🙂 Definite similarities to our situation. Your uncle hiring a P.I. was quite extreme. Glad you Dad told his relatives where to go, as did my husband.

  4. Congratulations! This is such a great story… Boo to the naysayers, hurrah for you two lovebirds 🙂 Here’s to the next forty-two!

  5. Happy Anniversary 😀 you did prove them wrong 😀 it’s so wonderful to see relationships last so long … you guys look great together <3

  6. Thank you, Shady. Yes, our marriage faced many objections, but we didn’t care. 🙂 That’s a great story about you and Mrs. Shady # 2. Sometimes, enemies become the best of friends and/or lovers. We used to argue a lot (both “Alpha” types) but have mellowed somewhat with age. It just means you’re passionate and keeps the relationship interesting. 😉

    1. Thanks, Michele. 🙂 We can barely believe so much time has passed! “Je T’aime” is a great song but it got banned for “pornographic” lyrics back in the day, (you had to understand French though. 🙂 ), so we stuck to the instrumental.

  7. I’m back again, to tell you that I have nominated you for “8 Photos of Happiness”, as I’m sure you’d make an interesting selection.

If you’d like to participate, you’ll find the details in the post that comment luv is linking.

  8. Happy anniversary to you and your husband Debbie! I can tell in the picture you shared that you are still very much in love! You give me hope that there can always be love in a marriage and that it can actually last a lifetime!

Wishing you many more years of happiness!

    Cori

    1. Thank you, Cori. 🙂 I’d say you and your hubby are doing well also. There are many of us “lifers” out there, despite what the statistics may tell you.

  9. Loved the pics! I can’t believe they actually posted in the paper that there was opposition. How long did it take the in-laws to accept you? Congrats on your 42 years (43 for us this year). Sometimes when you look at him and say those words in your mind “we’ve been together for over 40 years” doesn’t it feel surreal?

    1. Thanks, Carol. 🙂 That’s not a real newspaper article. I made it using http://fodey.com. It does feel surreal and we’re shocked that so many years have passed, so quickly. Congrats to you, too! A long-term marriage is a major accomplishment, these days.

    2. I forgot to answer your question, Carol…
My MIL never accepted me. She came from a small village and had a narrow world view. FIL embraced me when he came to Canada for a visit in the late 70s. My mother was a snob and had trouble accepting hubby’s blue collar occupation, plus she was really pissed off that I ditched university to get married. She got over it, eventually. Not sure about my father. Communication was never his strong suit.

  10. Wow! A 100 guest wedding! Something like that would stress me out. If my Other and I ever decide to get married, it would likely just be us going to the court and signing the papers. And then maybe a small get together party afterwards. Congrats on your anniversary! 🙂 🙂

    1. It was a major undertaking, especially on such short notice, Madilyn. Actually, 100 people is small by Italian standards. 🙂 I would have been happy to go to court as well, but making concessions is part of every successful relationship.

      1. Sounds like it! Too much stress for me, haha .. No kidding? Wow! I agree concessions are part of every successful relationship, but I’m glad we wouldn’t have to think about this much – neither of us would want a big shindig. Would rather spend the money on a cool afterparty with friends or the honeymoon 🙂

  11. Happy Anniversary to you and your hubs, Debbie! I admire the longevity of your marriage and think it’s absolutely amazing! Here’s to many more years of wedded bliss!

  12. Congratulations, great advice! It’s wonderful to have reached such a milestone in a day and age where the slightest bump can end such an important commitment. We’re going on 35 and realise everyday how blessed we truly are!

Hope you’re doing something amazing together!

    1. Thanks, Yolanda. 🙂 Yes, too many people give up on relationships much too soon. Congratulations on your upcoming 35th anniversary!

Low-key celebration at home this year, but we’ll go “all out” again for the 45th. We spent a month in Europe, celebrating our 40th.

  13. Congratulations! Mary and I have only been married 37; I feel like we’re a couple of kids now.

I think the best marriages start with a little controversy, don’t you?

  14. SUCH a handsome couple, then and now. Congratulations on nurturing that “whirlwind romance” into a lifetime of love.

  15. What a beautiful couple you are… before and later…. Congratulations! Our 40th anniversary is the 22 of this month. When I look back, it seems like a movie put on high speed. lol… time to slow down and enjoy each other. I’m sure you two are doing exactly that!

    1. Thank you, Angelika. 🙂 Congratulations to you and your “Hebby” as well. Hope you’ll be doing something memorable for your 40th. We did our month long trip to Italy/Germany/Greece to celebrate that. You’re right; it does seem like the years went by on high speed.
