END OF THE WORLD? SERIOUSLY?!

A Mayan walks into a bar...

ORIGINAL POST FROM MAY 2, 2012:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012_phenomenon

I was reading an article just now, that claims a full 15% of the world’s population believes the world will end in their lifetime.
Fittingly, this was filed under “Weird News” 😉

Reuters, May 1/12 article

A few excerpts:

“Whether they think it will come to an end through the hands of God, or a natural disaster or a political event, whatever the reason, one in seven thinks the end of the world is coming,” said Keren Gottfried, research manager at Ipsos Global Public Affairs which conducted the poll for Reuters.

About one in 10 people globally also said they were experiencing fear or anxiety about the impending end of the world in 2012. The greatest numbers were in Russia and Poland, the fewest in Great Britain.

Gottfried also said that people with lower education or household income levels, as well as those under 35 years old, were more likely to believe in an apocalypse during their lifetime or in 2012, or have anxiety over the prospect.

This would explain my scepticism as I’m old and fairly well-educated. 🙂   In my opinion, this “end of the world” hysteria is NO different from the Y2K scare.  Anybody remember that?  Yes, all hell was supposed to break loose, when the calendar changed from 1999 to 2000.  Do you recall what happened?

 ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!

It seems, there will always be somebody, somewhere who wants to create fear within the masses.

Other alarmists cite the shifting of the Earth’s north and south poles as the catalyst.  Weather certainly has seemed to be more extreme in recent years and there is some scientific basis for this, (as the producers of the movie 2012 will tell you 😉 ), however, what the fear mongers are spouting is beyond that, by far.

“HowStuffWorks” has it covered:

http://science.howstuffworks.com/nature/natural-disasters/5-year-2012-predictions4.htm

So what does this all have to do with 2012? Alarmist Web sites have falsely connected magnetic reversal with a reversal in the rotation of the Earth. Conspiracy theorists also claim that a magnetic reversal is scheduled for 2012 (in most cases, on Dec. 21), and that when it does occur, catastrophic disaster will strike the planet as it starts to spin in the opposite direction.

My best advice is to relax, enjoy your life,
don’t look for conspiracies and hidden meanings everywhere and above all,
“DON’T BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU HEAR OR READ!”

I’m sure it’s all just a misunderstanding! 😀

LOOKING FORWARD TO 2013!! 😀

    1. Yes, indeed! We have our big celebration Monday night, as per German tradition, but, we use hubby’s Italian tradition for the meal – seafood! Yummy. 🙂
Got all your shopping done? Cheers and have a good one.

      1. I like the sound of seafood mmmm 🙂
Actually it is like that every Christmas,
I just seafood and eat it 🙂 Who knew 😉

Have a delicious time this Christmas 😉

        1. Hehehe! Yes, we have seen a lot of food and did indeed eat it, Andro. This inevitably leads to the yearly New Year’s resolution to lose weight. :-p My philosophy is that calories don’t count over the holidays. Life is short – enjoy! 😀

        2. Hehehe! Yes, Andro, we saw plenty of food and did indeed eat it. 😉 This inevitably leads to the New Year’s resolution about losing weight. 😛 That’s okay. My philosophy is that calories don’t count over the holidays. Life is short – enjoy! 😀

  1. Yes and remember what they said about all
the computers crashing on the year 2000 erm
    it never happened…

Just enjoy everything and don’t be missing out
on the naked skateboarding, well unless you really
want to of course? 😉 🙂 lol

      1. Don’t forget the big scare on Aids…
Though scary it is not as easy to catch
as millions thought, but it is still a most
        horrible disease nonetheless 🙁

These end of the world scenarios are
ridiculous, I mean perhaps the world will
come a cropper one of these years but
this will more than likely be in another
two or three undred thousand years 🙂

Unless you know different of course? 🙂 lol

        MERRY CHRISTMAS DEBBIE 🙂 😉

        1. I’m with you, Andro and sure the world will last until the sun blows up, thousands of years into the future.
As for AIDS, yes, it is a horrible disease but thankfully, it is now treatable.
MERRY CHRISTMAS to you and yours!

  2. Fact of the matter is tat our sun will go super nova in about 5,000,000,000,000 years. Before that happens the suns outer atmosphere will expand to engulf and incinerate the planets Venus,Mercury and Earth. I predict that by this time the Mayans themselves will have made a comeback and will have taken over the earth. Their calender sales will have plummeted many years prior to this and instead they will be making a killing selling maize.

    1. Yes, I think I read something to that effect, years ago. Poor Mayans, LOL. Will anybody still be left alive by then anyway, I wonder?

  3. Well everything ends – sometimes, nothing is forever. I look at it this way: A persons lifespan in relation to the life expectancy of the world is very small. So. the chance the world ens in my – or your – lifespan is very, very remote. Just number crunching here… 😉

  4. Even if I lost whatever brain cells I have left, and thought this might be remotely true, I would live every day to the fullest, as I try do now. Living in fear is not living.

  5. I am totally on the same level with you on this, Debbie. Just laughable! So-called scientists should research and write about what really matters….. I spend not one little thought on it. Earth does its own thing since eons. We all have to die one day – – and that will be for certain. Do I think of my own dead? No! I live with all my strength and fun in life! Should the world encounter a natural catastrophy at one point, it will recover, it has done that since its beginning. Should the earth faults break open, the west coast fall into the Pacific or New Jersey will be flooded, or Yellowstone erupts – whatever will happen in this regard, that will be not the end of the world either. Just a few scars…..
