DELTA LADY

HISTORY

Leon Russell (born Claude Russell Bridges; April 2, 1942 – November 13, 2016) was an American musician and songwriter who was involved with numerous bestselling pop music records over the course of his 60-year career. His genres included pop, rock, blues, country, bluegrass, standards, gospel and surf records, with six Gold Records to his credit.
His collaboration records rank as some of the most successful and as a touring musician, he performed with hundreds of Hall of Fame artists. He recorded 33 albums and over 400 songs. Russell’s first commercial success as a songwriter came when Joe Cocker recorded the song “Delta Lady” for his 1969 self-titled album. The album, co-produced and arranged by Russell, reached number 11 on the Billboard 200. Russell went on to organize and perform in Cocker’s 1970 Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour. He recorded the song himself in 1970 and included it on his own eponymous album.

Now, on to the actual contest……

  1. Sorry I’m late to the party, but I made it just under the wire.

Give my tardy vote to Joe Cocker. For me, it was a toss up – Joe won by a hair.

    Thanks, lady!

  2. I like both the sounds BUT Joe’s version does sound cooler to my ears. Also, it’s easier to understand his words. So, yeah, you know where my vote goes 🙂

    1. By the way, I am not sure if I should be able to see my comments immediately as you are supposed to approve them first, but unlike here, my comments in your other posts are not shown to me, so I am not sure if they even got submitted..Just letting you know.

      1. I’m running behind but will check the other recent posts, shortly. So far, so good. 🙂 You’re on the comment white-list, as far as I remember.

  3. Like a few others here, I was never a big Joe Cocker fan but after listening to both versions, I also have to vote for Joe’s version of Delta Lady. He really did make the song his own and the vocals definitely stand out here. I think it has a slightly better overall mix as well. Close call, though!

  4. This is another great battle! I have to give it to the late, great Leon Russell. I love Joe Cocker but Leon just was more appealing to me. Geez it has been a rough year on musicians

    1. I believe you’re right, John. He was also part of the Mad Dogs and Englishmen Tour. You went along with the majority on this one. It was quite a blowout!

  5. Debbie, I’ve got this one easy, peasy! Yes Ma’am, I do! I’m giving my vote to Joe Cocker! Why? Two reasons, I love Joe Cocker and his version is the one I know the best. Maybe, I’m biased just a wee bit, what do you think? 🙂 Good battle!

  6. Not a song I’m familiar with. But it was a nice song. I like Joe Cocker best of both version. I think the version flowed better. I’m anxious to see the results of this battle as I think it’ll be close.

  7. RIP Leon Russell. I am so glad that 2016 aka ‘The Year of the Reaper’ is almost over. We’ve lost far too many good ones this past year.

Leon Russell does do a great job with his original, but I feel that Joe Cocker made the song his. I’m going to give my vote to Joe Cocker.

    Great battle!

    1. This year was brutal! Here’s hoping there won’t be as many shocking deaths in the entertainment industry next year. Thanks for your vote, Mary. Joe Cocker really has this thing wrapped up. Worst blowout, so far. I should have chosen a different song or different cover artist. Oh well!

  8. DEBBIE ~
I’ve never been a fan of Joe Cocker, and most (not all, but most) of what I know of Leon Russell is through covers of his originals. I’m not big on his voice, but he sure could write a song and play that piano.

In this one, I’m going to go the way of the majority (so far) and side with Joe Cocker. I thought it was more interesting from a musical standpoint.

    1. Well, Stephen, this was an even bigger blowout than the last one! I should have picked a different song or cover artist. So it goes, sometimes. Thanks for your vote.

  9. I vote for Leon Russell, although Joe Cocker sounded better than I thought he would. I simply like Russell’s sound better. Please remove me from the BOTB list. I’m taking a break from battling. Thanks!

    Love,
    Janie

  10. Nice holiday decorations! Love the cascading snowflakes;-) Six gold records for Leon? Wow. My favorites were always “Lady Blue” and “Hummingbird”, though in a 60 year span, he did a lot great ones. However – and this is almost difficult to admit – I think “Delta Lady” is more suited for Joe Cocker, who brought it the recognition it deserved. When I think of the song, it’s always Joe’s voice I hear. Somehow in comparison to Leon in this battle, Joe doesn’t sound so gravelly 😉

    1. Haha! You and everyone else (me too), thought Joe Cocker did it better. In hindsight, I should have picked a different song or cover artist. You’re right; Joe didn’t sound so rough here. For you:

  11. Maybe not my favorite Leon Russell song, but did he have any bad ones? Right now I can’t think of any.

Joe Cocker’s version is the one that I’m most familiar with–it’s a good one–but I prefer Leon’s style.

However taking both arrangements into consideration, the Cocker version does have more going on and is the more interesting to me.

I’m going to give my vote to Joe Cocker.

  12. Complete tie for me. Leon Russell’s version makes a person – certainly not me.. – want to kick back n’ pass the “bowl” around and Joe Cocker – who I’m really not a fan of but I do like this song – makes me want to get up and dance. 🙂 Tie.

  13. ah, well, in light of his passing I really hate to do this but I’m going to have to vote against Leon Russell and go with Joe Cocker on this one. I love Joe’s voice. And musically I’m more drawn to his version. It is definitely the version with which I’m most familiar so maybe that’s why…but yeah, on this one I have to go Joe Cocker. Sorry Leon. RIP…

Good battle and great song! Now it’s going to be in my head all day, which is fine with me. Maybe I can finally get that Thanksgiving Song out of my head! 🙂

    1. You’re not alone in choosing Joe Cocker. Most of us agreed with you, Michele. 🙂 Even Leon, who toured with Joe as part of his band. Thanks for your vote!
