Day 19: April 22

Sensational,  Spectacular,  Scenic,  Seductive, Splendiferous Santorini!

Last stop on the islands cruise and we were thrilled to be there for two nights.
What you see above is the volcano view from our hotel room balcony.

Santorini is essentially what remains after an enormous volcanic explosion that destroyed the earliest settlements on a formerly single island, and created the current geological caldera. A giant central, rectangular lagoon, which measures about 12 by 7 km (7.5 by 4.3 mi), is surrounded by 300 m (980 ft) high, steep cliffs on three sides. The main island slopes downward to the Aegean Sea. – Wikipedia

Is Santorini the real Atlantis?  Check out this fascinating video!

(Unfortunately, this video is blocked in the U.S. Apologies! See below for a comparable one)

Santorini has many beautiful beaches.  Most striking (and rocky) was the Red Beach:

A few kilometres east of the Red Beach is the excavation site of Akrotiri, the Minoan settlement which was destroyed by the massive volcanic eruptions all those centuries ago.  The volcanic ash preserved many frescoes, objects and artworks.

There’s no shortage of gorgeous scenery on Santorini, as these photos illustrate:

Santorini is unforgettable and at the top of my re-visit list.

Wouldn’t you love to visit Santorini?  Or perhaps you’ve been there too?

Looking forward to you comments!

    1. You’re going to go? Fabulous! June or late September would be best. It will be less hot, less crowded and probably cheaper (although, there aren’t that many bargains to be had). We went in mid-September and it was still very hot and crowded. The heat was manageable though, because it wasn’t too humid. Let me know if you’d like more info. 🙂

    1. Yes, I think these buildings are the ones they put on postcards most often. You would love Santorini, Laurel! It’s heavenly. ♥

  5. Hey Debbie!

Girl I am always fascinated by your pictures…and Santorini is a beautiful place. I could definitely see myself retiring and living in a place like that. It just looks so peaceful, like there’s no clock you know?

Thanks for sharing these pics with us. Sorry I’ve missed your other posts but I’ll be taking a peek at them as I catch up!

Hope you’re having a fabulous week. Has the weather gotten better up there?

    1. Nice to see you, Corina. No apologies necessary; I know you have a lot going on. Yes, Santorini is a real paradise and I’d love to go back sometime. It’s getting a little milder, finally, but the wind still has an edge to it. Thanks so much for visiting! 🙂

  6. Your pictures are beautiful and inspire my inner travel bug… as usual 🙂 Can’t wait to see what you have in store for tomorrow! – Visiting from A to Z Challenge – Petnetio Anu

  7. I’d never heard of Santorini before, but it looks like a must see (someday–maybe in that time travel sequence you and I talked about yesterday 🙂 )
It’s a funny thing about volcanic ashes, isn’t it. That’s the same thing that happened in Pompeii. Santorini looks amazing. Thank you

    1. Glad you liked the article, Mary. Yes, similar to Pompeii, except the residents had all fled before the volcano erupted. It is a magical place. ♥

  8. Wow, what a gorgeous place! Magical! I can see why you liked it so much. I really must visit Greece. You’re giving me a real taste to go traveling. Now to get the time and money. I never seem to have the two things at the same time.

    1. Yes, that’s an ongoing problem here too. Last year was our 40th anniversary, so we just went for it! Best trip of our lives and even though it cost way too much, there are NO regrets. 😀

  9. Wow I fell in love with Santorini through these beautiful pictures and your warm post! Added to my wish list now! My list is increasing day by day courtesy you and Eli! Lv

    1. So much to see, so little time. 🙂 Wouldn’t it be great to just leave everything behind and travel the world? Dreaming again……;)

    1. What amazing pictures these are! So vibrant, so full of history and life. It looks like a great place to visit someday. Thanks Debbie for this beautiful tour!
