#AtoZChallenge: F is for FACETIOUS

fa·ce·tious

fəˈsēSHəs

 adjective

treating serious issues with deliberately inappropriate humor

synonyms: clever, flippant, sarcastic, sardonic, satirical, wise-cracking

(Actually this isn’t my favourite “F” word, but, I did promise to keep it mild 😉 )

Silly, yet cute example: 🙂

Do you ever find yourself making a facetious comment, to lighten the mood?
I can be a real smart-ass sometimes and it doesn’t necessarily go over well.
That said, it’s preferable to wallowing in morosity.
(Ooh – another good word. Too bad “M” is already taken.)

FUN FACTS:
This is only one of two words that contain all the primary vowels in alphabetical order.

Do you know what the other one is?

FACETIOUS stems from the from Latin facetia ‘jest’  and from facetus ‘witty.’

A little levity goes a long way towards easing difficult situations. Agree? Disagree?

Looking forward to your comments!

  1. The appropriateness of humor depends on the circumstances, really. One really has to rely on instincts for this!

  2. Facetious is one of my favourite F words! But I sometimes ponder how to tell the difference between one person being facetious and the other lacking a sense of humour.

  3. My husband (a word nerd) couldn’t remember the other word (and admitted he can never remember it), but decided to point out that the word “facetiously” has all the vowels in order, plus “y”, which can be a vowel.

  4. Hehehe – good one Debbie… Great English-classes for us non-native speakers:-) (Although practically I knew this one I’m afraid:-) Haha 🙂

  5. Another fun word and a fun post, Debbie. I like being facetious at times as I love to joke around with sarcasm and silliness. Many people just look at me strangely or stone faced. Oh well. At least I’m having fun! Hahah!

  6. I’ve used this words in class before, and I usually get the slack jawed look from students and have to give the definition and an example. (I teach freshman composition, among other courses) Next semester I should have them do a A-Z assignment regarding words and definitions, so they can expand their vocab. The wheels in my mind are turning now. 😀

  7. I really got in trouble once for being facetious. After reading an article I had written involving Cicero and modern politics, an online acquaintance, very much interested in politics, told me he had once had a newspaper column writing about politics. He was hurt when I facetiously told him I just couldn’t imagine him writing on such a subject! Debbie, you might remember the occasion.
    Very nice word, Debbie.

  8. Facetious should be my middle name. Much to the chagrin of my family members I have a tendency to be facetious more often then they’d like. I just like to have some fun now and then.

  9. I’m a tad facetious myself, and it can land me a world of trouble. It’s easier to be facetious in conversation than it is in writing. Have to be careful there. Emoticons help. 🙂

  10. I love that word 🙂 Such a useful and robust word – slips off the tongue so nicely. Complete bother to spell though 😉

    1. I think it’s a great word, although some people consider those who use it regularly to be somewhat pretentious. 🙂 That’s okay – it’s still one of my favourites.

  11. Another great word! I tend to try to lighten moods with humor. Laughter is a necessary ingredient in my life and I think it needs to be so in everyone’s life. Loved the video! funny! How neat that the word includes all the vowels. Great trivia! Still giggling over that video… 🙂

    1. Humour is an excellent tool and a necessary part of life. 🙂 That little bit of trivia was stumbled upon purely by chance, but it fit so nicely into the post. Glad you enjoyed it, Michele!

  12. I believe the English are the champions for facitious humor. If you are on the same level it can be appreciated as ‘words of art.’ If you aren’t on the same level it can piss you off. To really enjoy facitious humor you need to get on the same level and play ping pong with it….. 🙂

  13. I’m like Peter, I find it hard to take things seriously although I get in trouble for it. My dad used to call me facetious all the time, so I associate it with mild disapproval!

  14. Hey Debbie, are you kidding? I’m constantly getting into trouble for this with the wife. But I just can’t help myself. It’s just the fun thing to do sometimes. 😉

      1. You have to admit Debbie that it does make life more interesting 😉

I don’t go over the top mind you, just enough to tease a little.
