The chosen theme:

 ♦ HISTORY♦

Ancient history has always been a major passion of mine.  The town where I was born in Germany still has the wall around it that the conquering Romans built.  In Europe, one is constantly exposed to these fascinating historical artifacts.

In 1990, for the occasion of my husband’s 40th birthday, we travelled to his Italian homeland for a celebration with friends and family in the Bari area. While there, we toured much of southern Italy, plus Rome, Vatican City and Pompeii.

I could picture this thriving ancient culture so vividly!  My mind was transported.  Inside the Colosseum I stood, transfixed, imagining what life had been like within those walls and marvelling at the intricate structures.

It would be easy to spend a couple of years in Rome, exploring all the ruins and other historic sites.  In addition to the Colosseum, we toured the Roman Forum, (see first photo), and visited most of the well-known landmarks, such as Hadrian’s Tomb and the Spanish Steps.  Much to our disappointment, the Fountain of Trevi was under reconstruction!

Pompeii was the most fascinating of all!  A city perfectly preserved by lava, when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD.  The Pompeians were an advanced civilization and even had plumbing.

One of our most memorable trips, to date.

Next month (Sept. 2013), this history buff’s lifelong dream will come true!  We are going to Greece for two weeks.  So exciting!  First, a Classical land tour, including Athens, Delphi, Olympia and Meteora, to be followed by a five-day islands cruise; touching down also in Turkey to tour Ephesus and capping off with two nights in Santorini.

In addition, we’ll be visiting friends and family in Italy, (another chance to see Rome) and going back to my German hometown.

The Wall awaits!

  1. I know this is an old post but just wanted to say I was visiting from the A to Z road trip and was really enjoying you eclectic range of topics. I was a first timer in 2016 and in awe of your 3 years joining in. The memorial for your Dad is a nice idea.

    1. Nice to meet you, Fran. I’m glad you’ve enjoyed your visit to The Den. 🙂 Thanks for dropping in. Yes, I’ve survived the A-Z three times and hope to continue with it every year. It can be gruelling but it’s also a lot of fun and a great way to network with some brilliant bloggers, even afterwards, like now. I haven’t started my A-Z Road Trip yet, but will be along, soon. Cheers!

  2. Hi Debbie,

Amazing! Seems you have got more stories about travelling after all. I’m excited for you, hearing that you gonna visit Greece in next month dear. You know, I love travelling and exploring but yet hardly do 🙂

Your pics and videos reminds me of the history lessons at school. Especially Pompeii. I can’t imagine such a disaster at all. But now it’s a paradise of travelers. Amazing how it preserved.

Once I’ve explored 3D view of Colosseum online and it was just amazing. If a computer generated one is amazing like that, how about the real one, eh? 😉

BTW just wondering. Have you thought about witnessing 7 wonders? 😉

You have a lovely weekend dear 🙂

    Cheers…

    1. Glad you’re enjoying my travel posts, Mayura. Travelling has always been a passion of mine, along with dogs and music. 🙂 Yes, the Colosseum really blew my mind! We will be seeing two or three wonders of the ancient world in Greece. Would love to visit some others as well, like the Egyptian Pyramids, (bad time to go, these days! :-() or the Taj Mahal. Thanks so much for visiting today and I hope you have a great weekend also. Cheers!

  3. Loved it, Debbie. You make me want to go travelling again. Loved seeing those ancient ruins in Rome when I went there in 1985. Wish I’d gone to Pompeii as it looks fascinating seeing the ruins after the eruption.

    1. You would have loved Pompeii Cathy. It was fascinating! Hope you get there one day. I’m so excited to finally be visiting Greece and all the historical sights there; not to mention the beautiful, lush scenery. Thanks for visiting and have a good weekend. 🙂

  4. Debbie, I’d love to go to Greece! How exciting for you. I can’t wait to see the pictures from your trip already. I alsos would love to see Italy as my family came from there and I remember my grandfather going there in the 70’s for 3 weeks. Someday!

    1. You would love Italy, Lisa. Fantastic country; food, wine, history, everything! 😀 We’ll only be spending a few days with family there, but hoping to revisit Rome and see the Fountain of Trevi, (under reconstruction last time) and Colosseum, (they’ve excavated a lot more in the meantime), again. So excited about Greece – my dream since childhood! Thanks for dropping by today. Have a good one!

  5. Hi Debbie

What a grand trip you have planned. Visiting family would make a lot of fun also. Not into history, but those countries definitely have a lot.

A number of years ago I went back home and toured all the tourists places on Vancouver Island. Although I lived close by growing up, very little of it did I see.

    Great pictures.

    Mary

    1. Hi Mary; Yes, it’s a once in a lifetime trip, for sure! 😀 Travelling to Greece has been my dream since childhood and it’s hard to believe we’re actually going. I know what you mean about tourist attractions. Lots to see in Toronto too, but we rarely get to those spots. Niagara Falls we visit a lot though – it’s only 45 minutes away by car and we love it there. Would love to visit Vancouver and the rest of B.C. one day. I’ve never been further west than Winnipeg, (lived there as a young child).

  6. Thank you for sharing these amazing pictures…they’re just breathtaking. Just staring at the image you shared of the Acropolis.

I would love to see Greece but I’m so afraid of flying, they’d have give me the biggest sedative to and from 🙂 so for now I’ll have to imagine being there through your posts 🙂

    Have a great week Debbie!

    1. Glad you enjoyed the post, Corina. Can’t wait to see the Acropolis in person! 😀 Fear of flying can be overcome, but, you’d have to deal with it head on and I’m sure that would be difficult. At least the internet allows you to explore the world while keeping your feet on the ground. Thanks for visiting and commenting. Sorry for the delayed response; so much to do before we go!

  7. These pics are awesome Debbie! Thanks so much for sharing these with us! I can imagine standing inside the colosseum and totally getting lost! How amazing that must have been!

    1. Glad you enjoyed the post, Bren. 🙂 Yes, the Colosseum was mesmerizing. The ruins in Greece will be equally so, I’m sure. Can’t wait! Thanks for commenting and sorry for the delayed response. Lots to do before we go.

  8. Hi Debbie,

    Awesome pictures 🙂

Rome looks just the perfect place to be in, especially for those who love to see the old historical landmarks. I DO get pretty lost in the ones we visit our end because they are so very fascinating!

I think your hubby’s 40th birthday must’ve been a memorable one, that’s how you remember all of this so well. Ah…and you are travelling to all of these wonderful places next month too – awesome indeed, which means we are going to be seeing more pictures once you are back.

Thanks for sharing this with us, and wishing you all the best for your trip. I can imagine the excitement 🙂

    1. Thanks Harleena. Yes, that trip was wonderful, especially since we shared part of it with a friend who has since passed away. Great memories. ♥ This trip will be a fulfillment of one of my life long dreams, so the excitement is definitely intense! Pictures will be forthcoming. 😀 Glad you enjoyed the post. Have a good weekend.
