#8sunday WEEKEND WRITING WARRIORS; FEB. 17/13

This is the third instalment of Weekend Writing Warriors’

8 Sentence Sunday Blog Hop.

Currently, I am writing a multi-part series about the dogs in my care, which will be turned into a book.  These 8 sentences are a continuation from last week’s story of Luke, the White Shepherd:

There was fur flying everywhere and as the years passed, the old “dogmobile”  would house a permanent Lukehair blanket, (others’ too, of course, but not so obvious).

Apparently, I wasn’t driving fast enough.  From the back seat, Luke leaned into my right ear . “Rawr, rawr, rawr, rawr” [~Are we there yet, are we there yet, are we there yet, are we there yet?~].  This continued until we arrived at our destination; quite the distraction!

The dog park wasn’t ideal for Luke.  He had a habit of trying to mount other males, some of whom took exception, so I opted to search for a safer venue.   Found a lovely, mostly deserted green space a few miles away, where Luke could play Frisbee to his heart’s content.

  2. My favorite line was the other dogs taking exception to Luke’s mounting pastime. So cleverly written! ;c)

  3. Thanks for sharing! I really got a sense of Luke from that snippet.

  4. They accuse me of leaving hair everywhere. I don’t bark when I’m in the car, but I usually sit up when they stop at a junction so that I can see where we are. The expressions on the faces of drivers behind us can be amusing!

  5. Ha! I have a dog with Luke’s same social problems. Glad you found a nice alternative activity for him. :-)

  6. I like how your phrases offer a strong visual without being too wordy. Now in the book itself, I might like a couple more sentences with Luke playing Frisbee, but it would just be frosting. I can picture both of you in these scenes nicely with just a few sentences.

Pets. So much love when we have them with us, so much heartache when they’re gone.

    • Thanks for the suggestion Marcia. I will probably revisit every chapter before putting them all together and flesh them out a bit. Yes, pets are wonderful and it’s so heart breaking when we lose them. :-(

  7. Hi Debbie,

Wow… You are writing a book? ;) That’s wonderful. HA… Now you gonna be an author, eh? ;)

Well, honestly I don’t think I can visit everyone here as I’m yet pending with your last list of bloggers too dear ;) Let’s see though. Woah… Keeping me busy all the way with regular blogs and list of blogs to visit.

Wish you all the best for your book Debbie :)

    Cheers…

    • I know you’re busy Mayura and appreciate your taking the time to visit my blog and leave comments as well. :-) Yes, I am “blogging a book”, (or two). Other people have done this and it worked out for them, so, here’s hoping! Writing a book is something I’ve wanted to do since childhood. Cheers!

  8. I’m a sap for dog tales (and wagging dog tails). I read it all. Thirteen years old. He lived a good life. And I can’t imagine hwo many times you’ve cried over dogs passing away. When I lost my old (15 years) Pokey in 2011, I swore I’d never have another dog. We have two now, Rotty mix rescues. The little one (half Blue Heeler) is DC and Bobbi’s. The big one, half Lab is Dave’s. Both dogs lay beside my computer in the evenings. I didn’t want to love them (damnit anyway), but I do. It does hurt to lose them. Dogs are such amazing creatures. Have you ever thought of writing a fiction story in which you go first person–as the dog? Tell a tale about life through a dog’s eyes? I bet you’d be so good at it. :-)

    • Hi Teresa; Thanks for reading the whole story. So glad you enjoyed it! :-) Your dogs sound lovely. Speaking in the first person as the dog…….what an intriguing idea! It’s something to consider and I really like that idea! Excellent suggestion. Have a great week.

  9. Love this! SO cute and funny (Lukehair blanket!). Awesome 8.

  10. I had a lovely Sheltiehair sweater once, but I lost it in the fire. Luck sound like a very dominant dog.

Luke sounds like quite the character. This made me laugh out loud.

  12. Luke has so much character. What a sweetheart.

  13. I love the picture of Luke urging her to speed. Talk about backseat drivers! LOL

  14. Luke and my Franny could go into the dog hair sweater making business. No – seriously:

I sweep at least 1/2 a dozen times a day and still can’t keep up with all the hair!

Love the dry subtle humor with the “some of whom took exception” line. :)

  15. Hee! I loved this! Particularly Luke’s tendency to mount other males. *giggles* Very nicely done! :)

  16. Hee! I love this! Particularly Luke’s tendency to mount other males. *giggles* Very nicely done!

  17. Luke is awesome, I’d like to know more about his personality :) And I agree with Jess – this snippet has a strong voice. Lovely!

  18. At our house we say the flying fur is enough to make a new dog or a sweater, depending on which you’d like more.

  19. Quite a picture you paint, of the fur flying – enjoyed that, very true to life! Another terrific excerpt!

  20. Delicious the way you communicate with Luke. And he has a habit of mounting male dogs! A gay pooch. Trendy and wonderful. We love our furry friends- little kids needing care. Thanks, Debbie.

  21. Mom and I laughed about fur flying everywhere. I don’t shed at all but my Kuvasz sister sheds enough for an entire pack and where ever she goes there is always white fur flying around! Mom has not worn dark colors in the last 10 years since Katie came to live with her because of the fur!

  22. I love the “permanent Lukehair blanket” comment. I’m continually amazed by how some dogs shed more hair than others.

Personally, I think this snippet feels a little stronger than your previous snippets. It reads like you’ve really found a writing voice you’re comfortable with. Great snippet.
